Take a Look at The Props of Farmouth Island | Grim Gallery Vol.1

Over here at The Bornless, we're dedicated to crafting Farmouth Island into a truly eerie and detailed experience. Situated just off the coast of Massachusetts, this fictional 1960s American location captures the essence of settlement and wilderness of that era. Our goal is to immerse players in a world that feels genuinely authentic. Grim Gallery will be a regular series where we showcase the assets you'll encounter while playing The Bornless.

When exploring The Bornless, you'll encounter assets like these near locations resembling a farm. However, be cautious in the cornfields; there are rumors of farmers disappearing at night.

Life on Farmouth Island necessitates the use of boats for transportation to and from the mainland. Whether for personal travel or fishing, the people of Farmouth have become accustomed to this lifestyle.

Despite being a bit cliché, the slaughterhouse is one of our favorite locations. The sights and smells of blood and meat seep through the screen, creating a visceral experience whether battling humans or demons.

Adapting to new technology takes time. Even though telephones existed in the 1960s, many still preferred sending letters. This slower pace fits well with the romantic theme of The Bornless, where Harry goes against demons to find his missing wife.

Stay tuned for our next volume of Grim Gallery. Until then...

Meet Cathedral Studios | Eric - QA Lead

Bugs are the bane of every game, be it casual or competitive, spoiling the fun for everyone involved. In horror games, they're especially jarring, breaking immersion in ways that really throw off the vibe. One of the team members dedicated to discovering and rooting out these nasty bugs is...

Definitely Harry. He's the OG to the story of The Bornless, and part of what drew me into the project. Plus, he's a handsome devil, just wait till you see the MetaHuman character remodel he's gotten.

Character Rework | Polnoch

In the early days of The Bornless, each match comprised eight players, organized into duos. Among them were Polnoch and his partner Maya, a skilled tomb raider and archaeologist. Our commitment to creating characters that not only look cool but also resonate with players in various ways has been an ongoing endeavor. At our latest playtest in October, we've heard that we are in need of more distinctive character designs, so we decided to do something about it. We started with the main duo, Harry and Denzel, but given Polnoch's popularity in previous playtests, we are excited to kick off our Character Rework showcases with his remarkable evolution
Who is Polnoch?
Much is unknown about the man named ‘Polnoch’. Almost certainly a moniker given to him, the Russian root word translates into ‘Midnight’. Curious, given that one of the few things we do know about him is that he is distinctly not Russian. Perhaps it is an attempt at obscuring his true identity? Regardless, Polnoch is a dangerous man. He was trained from a young age to hunt Demons for an equally mysterious organization, the masters of which remain shrouded in secrecy.
Role In The Bornless
Polnoch appears as one of the major eight playable characters within the Bornless universe. The timing of his arrival on Farmouth Island, just a few short days before the titular ritual was invoked, has led many to believe he had a hand in the events that unfolded… Whether that is true or not remains to be seen. For now, Polnoch’s role in The Bornless seems to align with the rest of the core cast of eight; that is, to invoke the ancient ritual. To fight. To survive.

Expect significant changes to all of our characters, each undergoing transformations that span not just their appearance but their stories as well. This provides a fantastic opportunity to delve deeper into the universe of The Bornless. Learn who these characters are and uncover the pivotal roles they play as the game's narrative continues to evolve.

Meet Cathedral Studios | Isidora - Environment Artist

Horror isn’t just about what you see—it’s about feeling uneasy, as if danger could spring from every shadowy corner. It's a thrilling challenge to craft the chilling yet oddly captivating world of The Bornless, requiring immense talent and creativity.

I often wish I had more hours in a day so I can have time for all of my hobbies. Until a few months ago I considered what is now my job a hobby! Other than that, I enjoy outdoor sports and spending time in nature. However, music is probably my biggest passion. I play a few instruments but the most surprising one must be djembe - an African drum - which I play in a drum circle collective.

I guess I would choose Maya. Haven't done much thievery in my life but I do enjoy stealthy games the most. Additionally, I see her as a bit of a thrill-seeker and adventurer, which resonates with me.

Vehicle Showcase: Solomon’s Pickup Truck

In the early stages of developing The Bornless, the idea of incorporating vehicles seemed like an odd fit. If asked, "Will The Bornless have vehicles?" we would've likely responded with, "No, what do you mean?" However, as the game world expanded, the necessity for a feature enabling rapid travel between locations became apparent. Fast travel and teleportation didn't align with our vision, leading us to introduce Solomon’s Pickup Truck, the first player-controlled vehicle in The Bornless.
Preserving the Eerie
Adding this vehicle posed a unique challenge. The Bornless is, at its core, an FPS horror shooter, and vehicles are neither inherently terrifying nor do they shoot bullets. After our 3D Team completed the car's design, the sound design team took the lead, crafting immersive sounds that enhance the experience. Just envision the sound of tires screeching as you drift through the winding streets of Farmouth. These vehicles are housed in garages at specific locations on the map. Accessing the cars involves our Active Interact System, which adds a fun layer to interacting with objects within the game.
Gameplay Design
Our design intentionally supports dynamic gameplay scenarios. Whether players are being shot at or chased by a demon, the trucks are designed so that when a player jumps onto the back, they stay put instead of bouncing off. Although the game primarily supports duo play, if you spot a truck and have the skills to jump onto the back, you can execute some impressive James Bond-style takedowns.
