Farm Together 2 - Harvestable items

Today we're starting the first of a (hopefully weekly) series of posts detailing the core features of Farm Together 2. In some cases they will be new things, in others they will be improvements over mechanics already present in the first installment.

Let's start with the main thing you'll be doing in your farm, which is planting and harvesting items!

[h2]Introduction[/h2]

Pretty much like in the first game, in Farm Together 2 you'll be planting crops, trees, etc. and they will take some time to grow (ranging from a few minutes to whole days of realtime in extreme cases!) before they're ready to be harvested.

Do not be frightened by those times! A crop taking one day to grow means that it will be ready when you play the next day, you don't need to keep the game running for 24 hours!

Harvesting items grants the following things:
  • Money that can be used to plant more items
  • Experience for your player and the farm, that will help you unlock new stuff.
  • Mastery of the item you're harvesting, leading to new unlocks and higher yield from crops.
  • Resources (such as fruit, cereals, milk...) that can be used in a number of ways.


Every type of harvestable has its own mechanic, which we'll be explaining in detail. Let's get to it!

[h2]Crops[/h2]


In order to plant crops, you need to plow some land first. Also, they require a specific season to be planted on.

Once planted, they will take some time to grow and be ready for the harvest. If you regularly water them (either manually or by placing sprinklers), they will grow twice as fast!

After harvesting crops, the land has to be plowed again in order to plant new ones.

We're keeping the same mechanics from the first Farm Together for crops, as they worked pretty well and there were no major complaints with them (other than visitors not plowing after harvesting!), other than it can take some time when working on large fields. We hope that tractor improvements (explained in a later post) will help with that.

[h2]Trees[/h2]



Trees can be placed at any time, and will grow fruit when specific seasons start.

They can be quite expensive, so it will take a number of harvests before they start being profitable, however they require little manteinance and are easy to work with.

Trees are also keeping the same system as in the first Farm Together. Don't worry, from now on everything starts being different!

[h2]Animals[/h2]



Animals, require food to grow, and after some time they'll yield resources that can be harvested for profit.

Every animal requires a specific resource to be fed (for example chickens eat cereal and pigs eat vegetables) and they have a maximum food capacity that can be increased by placing feeders.

If they run out of food, they will stop their growth until you feed them again.

The main difference from the first Farm Together is that they now take resources instead of money to feed them (this was partially done with Feeders in the first one), and that the amount of food is no longer tied to their harvest time (which leads to potentially having several harvests per feed, depending on the animal).

This means they're much easier to understand, while the core mechanic remains similar.

[h2]Ponds[/h2]



Fish tiles are merged together to form ponds. Every fish tile will take some time to be ready, but the whole pond can be harvested with a single click.

We've completely reworked fish and now their growth time is based on seasons. For example a clownfish may take 3 seasons to be ready to be harvested, while a swordfish may take 10 seasons, etc.

We've also removed the random factor from ponds, as it could get really confusing, specially when trying to fulfill quests or getting resources.

Finally, you can now fish whole ponds with a simple click, however there will be a growing income reduction for very large ones (50+ tiles).

[h2]Flowers[/h2]


Once placed, flowers can be regularly harvested. If you water them, they will grow faster.

Flowers have also been changed, as it was the most confusing mechanic from the previous game, with people not understanding why they wouldn't give their full yield (not to mention it was technically impossible to get it because of weather effects!). Now they work the same way as crops, with the difference that they're permanent.

While the first Early Access version of Farm Together 2 will not feature new kinds of harvestable items, we definitely want to add new ones in the future. We have a couple of them in mind, but we're eager to hear your suggestions!

Welcome! This FAQ tries to address the questions we've been receiving about the upcoming Early Access release. We hope it helps you in making a clear picture of what's coming!

[h2]Is the game fully finished? What is Early Access?[/h2]
The game is NOT finished. We're releasing it on Steam Early Access first, which is a sort of public beta access.
The game should be fairly polished, but it’s still missing many features and content. It will take time until it can be compared to the first Farm Together in regards to the amount of content available.

[h2]When does the Early Access launch happen?[/h2]
We’re planning to start the Early Access period in May 7th.

[h2]How long will the Early Access period take?[/h2]
We usually spend between 6 to 12 months on Early Access, based on our previous games.
By buying the game during Early Access you’ll get it cheaper than on release, you will see the game grow alongside the community and be able to steer its development by providing feedback and suggestions, and we usually grant some nice surprises to Early Access backers.

[h2]Which languages will be included?[/h2]
Our plan with this is to follow our usual behavior: We’ll do the English and Spanish localizations, and rely on community translations during Early Access to add/update other languages. Once the game is about to exit out of Early Access, if it’s required, we may end up hiring translators to add new languages.
We’ll add the languages to the game once their translation progress is fairly advanced. If you want to help, you can join the Farm Together Discord Group and follow the instructions there.

[h2]When will the game release on consoles?[/h2]
It’s still a long way until that! The Early Access period will take some time, and console versions won’t be released until the game development is more advanced. So probably around mid-late 2025.
As for specific consoles, this is the plan:
  • Xbox Series / PlayStation 5: Definitely!
  • Xbox One / PlayStation 4: The game should run on these, but since it’s a year from now, we believe most people will have already transitioned to the newer systems, so we’re not sure it will be worth the effort.
  • Nintendo Switch: We’ll probably release the game on this version, but it could be a cut-down version with fewer features. We won’t know until we get to it and see how the game performs.
  • Nintendo Switch 2: We don’t know anything about this, but we’ll try to release the game on it if possible.


[h2]When will you release a Roadmap?[/h2]
Shortly after the game launches on Steam Early Access, we’ll prepare a Roadmap with a draft of intended features and content.
Most of it will be adding content (it takes time to model all those clothes, farm items, etc!), but of course there will be new features too.

[h2]How will the game handle Monetization?[/h2]
We’ll keep the same system we used in the first game: You pay once for the game and that’s it, you’ll get new free content on each update. After release, we’ll split content between free updates and paid themed DLCs.
We don’t plan on adding battle passes or live service trickery.

[h2]Will there be Events or some Seasonal Content?[/h2]
Seasonal Events are not in the game right now, but are definitely planned!
We want to make them a bit more interesting than just “plant x things to unlock this reward”, but base content has currently a higher priority, so it will take some time before the first seasonal event is added.

[h2]What are the new features?[/h2]
The game brings A TON of quality of life improvements and some changes to the base gameplay mechanics, addressing many of the confusing or plainly boring/tedious parts of the first game (for example, animals, flowers or selling resources at buildings).
On top of that, we’ve remade lots of systems from scratch to allow for some things that just weren’t possible before, on top of improving performance and memory usage.
We’ll share more details over time, but here’s a glimpse of the two major new features:
  • Terraforming: Once you unlock this feature, you’ll be able to change the farm terrain as much as you like, adding slopes or valleys, rivers, changing the terrain type (snow, sand, ...).
  • Visiting the Town: There's a town now! Most shops of the first game have been moved to the town, so you have an easily accessible hub where you can trade resources and upgrade things. There are also lots of characters to talk with, and they may make some requests from time to time.


[h2]What features from the first game are still missing?[/h2]
Other than lots of content/items, the game still has a few missing features compared to the first one. We plan on adding them over time during Early Access development, enhancing the way they work compared to the previous game. These are the main features not yet implemented:
  • Farmhands
  • Pets
  • Endgame upgrades/buildings
  • Multiplayer Boost
  • Events


[h2]What are some examples of new things you plan to add?[/h2]
Of course, we’re not only planning on adding features from the first game, we want to add new, interesting things to this sequel!
This list isn’t final and may be modified based on suggestions, etc, but some things that we’d love to add to the game at some point:
  • Rideable horses
  • NPCs visiting your farm
  • Tools to offer more fine-grained control over what can be done by visitors on specific parts of the farm.
  • Minigames of some sort
  • New types of items with new gameplay mechanics.
  • Town customization.


[h2]Does it have controller support?[/h2]
Yes, just like the first one. You can play with keyboard & mouse or controller.

[h2]Will it feature split screen coop?[/h2]
Yes! Split-screen coop will be available, and unlike the first game, you'll be able to play in splitscreen on online farms as well.

[h2]Does it work on the Steam Deck?[/h2]
Yes, we've tested it here and it works nicely. The interface is a bit bigger there so that text is easier to read. But you can tweak it to your liking, in case you want it even bigger, or just like the regular PC experience.

[h2]Does the game have Dedicated Servers? Can others play on my farm while offline?[/h2]
This might change in the future, but for now the answer is no. The game will work in the same way as the first one did: Every player hosts its own farm.
As for dedicated servers, while the chance is a bit higher than before (the first game relied on Steam networking for data transfer, so it required a Steam account to properly run), it’s not a priority at the moment. But we’ll want to give it a try at some point.

[h2]What about cross-play or cross-saves?[/h2]
We’ve already done some successful tests in regards to this, but there’s a lot of paperwork and edge cases to have in mind. It’s still early (as we said, no console version until 2025), so things may change, but we’ll try hard to make cross-play a real possibility.
Nintendo Switch version would be probably left out of cross-play, as it’s probably going to have less features than the other consoles: The first game was dragged down by the technical limitations of this console, and we don’t want that to happen again.

[h2]How will suggestions be handled?[/h2]
The page we used in the first game was really helpful and it has been a great tool not just to add features to the first game, but also to line out the plans for Farm Together 2, however it hasn’t been perfect: The difficulty of back-and-forth communication on it made it a bit of a one-way suggestion system, so it could have been more useful.
For Farm Together 2, we’ll use the new Discord Threads feature, which should allow for better communication and discussion of features, although the lack of a proper voting system, and risk of duplicates, may hinder it.

[h2]How much content/items does it have?[/h2]
All the assets have been redone (otherwise it wouldn’t be a proper sequel!), with more detail and better looks.
On the Early Access launch the game will have (at the very least):

The best way would be to use the Farm Together Discord Group. There will be a dedicated bug reports section and we’re always watching that section. Mails to [email protected] can also be used, but Discord is usually a better tool for this.
