20th Anniversary and Events

Announcement from CHIMM, our marketing team manager:

June 6th, 2021 marks two decades since WWII Online launched. It’s been a remarkable twenty years and while a lot has changed, we couldn’t be happier about where we are, or where we’re heading. So, to celebrate our "Vigintennial" we’ve decided to host several "special events" leading up to our Anniversary weekend - you will NOT want to miss this! Read the article below for more details.

Pictured below is the original loading screen and the rare French High Command Officer with his white pants. WWII Online has changed dramatically over the past 20 years, but the one constant is our player community and the friendships that have endured these past decades. Our Vigintennial is dedicated to you.

Thanks to the Community Management and Marketing Team members, we have several mini-events lined up for the first week of June (June 1st through June 4th) followed by a special 2 day virtual convention. Some of the listed events will be open to all players, and other events will be limited to those who signup (details to be posted at a later date). Tentatively, here's a brief overview:

- Tuesday, June 1st - "Poseidon's Wrath" naval event
Destroyers battle it out to be labeled "King of the Sea"

- Wednesday, June 2nd - "Thou Shalt not Pass" tank event.
Players spawn either a Vicky or 232, objective is to successfully get your unit, alive, across the bridge while your opponent tries to do same thing to you!

- Thursday, June 3rd - "Ace of Aces" fighter air event.
Think your the best? This will be a single elimination, pilots drawn by lot for matchups.

- Friday, June 4th - "Last Man Standing" infantry event, and "Grand Prix" truck race event.
Grab your knife and rush/take/keep control of an Army Base bunker!

- Saturday and Sunday June 5th and 6th - TOP SECRET
The virtual convention events cannot be revealed at this time, however, I can say this will be the most EPIC Anniversary in the game's history. Prepare to be blown away - seriously!!!

Keeping with Anniversary traditions, awards will be given to the top player of each "mini-event". The top player award will be a one of a kind 20th Anniversary themed XXL Game mat.

Thank you for 20 amazing years of supporting WWII Online, and keep an eye out for the 20th Anniversary updates. S!

~CHIMM

Community update

Panzerjäger I

Today's live update shows the progression of the Panzerjäger I, a Tier 0 tank killer coming to WWII Online shortly! We'll walk you through the vehicle, its positions and armament. We'll also show you the armor penetration capabilities it has specifically in Tier 0 against the mighty Matilda Mk II, a feared Allied tank capable of absorbing tremendous fire power. The Matilda has been a particular source of contention with the Axis community, and let it be known - we intend to keep the Matilda performing strong and have maintained its historically tough properties. Our solution to help provide balance was to get the Germans a historical self-propelled anti-tank platform in Tier 0.

We also have some easter eggs hidden in the video, watch closely! We've got some Allied vehicles coming up next in our production pipeline, read more for details!

Video Tip: Skip to 4 minutes to the beginning of the actual demo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRvIvqmFULI

NEXT IN THE PRODUCTION PIPELINE
Our production team is continuing to work on more vehicles and since we just covered the Panzer above, we want to be sure to speak to our Allied community and let you know that the Loraine and the Universal Carrier is next in line to receive attention for implementation.

Keep a close eye on our 2021 Roadmap Public Trello (Here) for updates as we go through the process.

PC 32bit Discontinuation - April 1st 2021

As announced in our 2021 Roadmap, we wanted to provide a courtesy reminder that the 32bit game client for PC users is officially coming to an end as of April 1st, 2021. With the evolution of technology, Mac no longer supporting it and Windows likely not far behind, WWII Online needs to continue to evolve with the time as well. Less than 3% of our users are currently using the 32bit game client, and the support required to keep legacy systems going being heavy, there's limited ROI for time spent here. Please check the Roadmap link posted to see what system recommendations we have for you. For many of you already running Windows 10 this should not be a problem. If you are on an older, no longer supported by Microsoft operating system, we do suggest upgrading soon.

We're not far away from a new patch (loaded with goodies) for WWII Online users and it will not include a 32bit PC client, so be prepared and act swiftly if you need. Thanks for your attention/support, and if you have any questions please ask, we are here to help. Salute!

Community report by SIDEOUT

Allies Press Against Fierce Resistance Moving East!
Almost 2 weeks into Campaign 181 and the Allies own 71% of the map and the Axis own 29%. The road to the east has not been easy for the Allied forces as they face fierce resistance by a persistent Axis enemy. See reports from the Allied CinC Rabbit and the Axis CinC Kardehk and notice the number of awards and medals issues just in the past 2 weeks! Great job all to recognize those who go above and beyond! Also read our next in series of The Real War: The Assault on Eben Emael.

Report from the Allied Commander in Chief Rabbit:
It is late into the tenth day of the war as I write to you all. I can proudly report the German’s advance through the Low Countries and France has been halted. In fact, our brave warriors have been able to slowly push the Hun back and now have some of our troops in Bitburg. There have been some major clashes across the front in the week and half since the Axis invasion with devastation unseen in Earth’s history. Two major qualities you all have exhibited repeatedly during this war is determination and resiliency. We have had long drawn-out fights for Hallschlag, and Bitburg and no matter how hard the fighting has been or how long it has raged, you all have shown how determined you are to end this war and bring peace to our Nations again. You have crushed every major Axis counterattack with the same determination and resiliency. In Etain, low on supply we dropped paratroopers onto German tanks and their forward base and repelled all their attacks, and there were many. Then just a couple of nights ago, the Germans launched a well led, organized, and equipped counterattack across the front line in Clervaux, Willemstad, Bastogne, Zundert, and LaRoche but you, the mighty Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen repelled them time and time again. When we work together, we have shown we can overcome any challenge we face.

Now, I caution you, that we cannot become complacent. Our adversary is very capable as history has shown. We must continue the course. Remember the basics and work together. If we do that, we will be victorious.

It has been a real honor to fight with all of you during this conflict and I look forward to witnessing firsthand how incredible we can be as a fighting machine.

I would like to take a moment to pay respect to Colt who has retired from AHC after going undefeated as our CinC.
Additionally, Joker has retired from AHC but will continue the good fight with us as we go forward.

Report from the Axis Commander in Chief Kardehk:
24 March 2021
KardeHK, Commander in Chief

The Fatherland struggles against the relentless push of the Allied armies. They seek to overrun us with their hordes...but Germany resists!
Though grossly outnumbered, our forces are fighting with the will and tenacity of an army ten times its size. We have stunned the enemy with our willingness to shift from defense into attack.
And attack we shall. I call on all Axis officers and soldaten to rally to the battle banners and join our call to glory.
For glory! For Honour! For the Fatherland!

Recognizing the valor, skill, and accomplishments of the Axis players and officers is the most important and satisfying part of being Commander in Chief. It is with great pride that I announce the following awards to very worthy individuals who make the Axis the power that we are.

In Our Series: The Real War:
Axis Assault on Eben Emael

Airborne operations were a fairly new concept in 1940. In peacetime Germany, Italy,Japan, and Russia had all begun experimental operations with paratroops, but as of 1940 none had attempted to use this new concept in battle. This changed in the early morning hours of May 10, 1940, when 9 gliders, carrying 71 German paratroops, landed on the heavily defended Belgian fort of Eben Emael. In World War 2 Online, the Axis invasion of the Low Countries begins with the Germans owning Grobbendonk, and pushing westward from there. The reality of theinvasion was actually EAST of these lines, at Maastricht. The Belgians had constructed the world’s largest fort in preparation for what they thought would be a conventional attack (like what had occurred in WW1) at Fort Eben Emael, pictured below:

The German assault on the fort produced a number of military firsts. The first use of
gliders attacking an enemy defensive position. The first use of hollow shape charge
explosives against steel and concrete fortifications. And it all worked, in spectacular
fashion, and it changed the way military strategists planned forever. The German
assault on Eben Emael is still taught at the US Military Academy at West Point to
this day.

For the German invasion to be successful, they HAD to get across the three bridges
at Maastricht that were defended by the Fort, and approximately 1500 well trained
Belgian soldiers stationed inside. There is much historical documentation on the
strength of the fort, suffice it to say it was considered impregnable by a
conventional infantry assault.
The Germans were about to show the world, however, that they were anything but
conventional.

Next Week: The Assault begins

NEW 2021 ROADMAP ITEMS

And now let's take a look at what's coming during the year of 2021!

BOMBER LOADOUTS ARE COMING SOON

What this means is that players will be able to determine what type of bombs they'd like to carry when they spawn in / go for their sortie. This does not affect routine supply availability, each load out is just considered as one plane available in supply. Please review the user interface functionality and the actual load outs we have planned for these specific bombers, it's a little different from when we last showed you and should be easier (a check mark instead of a manual typing of a numbered load out).

JU88-A4 STATUS UPDATE

Let's just take a moment to say - sorry for the delay here - this has been an extraordinarily complicated model, but it's almost there and has received consistent treatment. We've also assembled a quick demo / review of the positions available on the aircraft and are proving to you that it is now flying in-game, something I think you'll be happy to see. HATCH is working on fine tuning the aircraft's flight model right now. The Ju88-A4 will be the German's counterpart to the A-20/Boston/Db7 variant and will come out alongside the Wellington when it's ready to maintain balance.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

WELLINGTON UNDER DEVELOPMENT

The Wellington is officially in development and BMBM is modeling it as fast as he can. This Wellington Bomber is the counterpart of the German Heinkel 111 and provides a greater payload for the duration of the war for Allied forces (made to be available for all Allied countries), and will be coming out alongside the Ju88-A4 to maintain balance.

SDKFZ 251-10 AUSF B

Yes - you guessed it right! It's a 251 with a Pak36 mounted and an MG34 covering its rear. Of course this vehicle will be multicrew-able as all vehicles with more than a single position are in WWII Online. We're excited to see how the Germans plan to employ this.

LORRAINE 37L ANTI-CHAR

Here's a Lorraine 37L Anti-Char is armed with the 47mm SA 37 Gun. Has a speed of 35 km/h (on the road) and comes with AP and HE munitions. Does anyone else feel sorry for that driver all cooped in there like that?

And sticking on with the Lorraine, here's the Armored Personnel Carrier variant coming with them.

PANZERJÄGER 1

A new Tier 0 Panzer coming to the Axis Forces! This vital piece of machinery is capable of penetrating the armor ANY Tier 0 Allied tank, yes you read that right - it can even kill a Matilda. It's armed with a 47mm Skoda VZ 36 L43 Gun. While the rear is exposed it has good protection from the front and sides. It also rides very low which means it can be hidden. You can drive at 40 km/h while on the road and the commander can pop up and down as seen in this screen shot to keep him well protected.

US M3 HALFTRACK - APC

Coming to the US Forces is the M3 Halftrack! This iconic beast will be the Armored Personnel Carrier US forces and has a gorgeous .50 caliber mounted on it - keep your heads down!

US/FR ANTI-TANK VERSIONS

Here we have some beastly tank killers coming later in the war for the US and French forces. Of course these are variants of the US M3 Halftrack's we're familiar with.

UNIVERSAL CARRIER

We've shown you the Universal Carrier before and it's coming along very nicely. Pictured here you see the U.C. with the Bren Gun mounted in the front hull and the turret is a Vickers MG. Light, nimble and capable of towing they'll definitely be a force multiplier on the battlefield.

INTEGRATED VOICE COMMUNICATIONS (IVC)

We haven't forgot about IVC and development has been picked back up, however we have an important change from our original plan to help simplify the roll out and communication for players. Remember that this design plan is intended to create maximum inclusivity between the fresh new player and the day 1 veteran, and of course it is intended to enhance situational awareness.

While Discord has been a great solution (which we'll continue to keep operational) having voice communications built into the game with no other dependencies will be extremely valuable to getting folks to work together. And before you ask, we certainly will have a way for you to be able to mute users and for our moderators to handle any problems as they arise.

MISSION RADIO (MR)

All mission participants will have a radio channel that they'll have access to. This is not distant limited which will be valuable for pilots, sailors, and long range ground force needs. Mission Radio channel will be restricted to mission participants only, so your squad affiliation will not matter.

LOCAL/PROXIMITY 3D POSITIONAL AUDIO CHAT

In other words regardless of who is on your mission, when you run by someone in the game world you'll be able to talk to them and know what direction they are. This will be vital for tactical communications and help increase situational awareness. Imagine running up to a friendly tank and helping to tell him where an enemy vehicle might be, or imagine your mission leader rallying troops to prepare for an assault on a spawn depot.

CRS has wanted to see integrated voice comms come into game for many years now and we're getting closer!

32-BIT DISCONTINUATION

With the implementation of the Integrated Voice Comms plan, we need to prepare for the discontinuation of the 32-bit client because it won't be compatible. The effective date of the 32-bit discontinuation will be April 1st, 2021. This does not directly mean that IVC will be publicly available at that point but it's a firm cut off date that we need to inform you of.

Since the implementation of our 64-bit client we have made several fixes and enhanced its performance. But do know, if you are on a lower end computer you should consider upgrading your rig's components.

Upgrade Recommendations:
  • CPU: WWII Online is a CPU (single core) heavy driven game, and works best with Intel rather than AMD. Get an Intel i7+ with maximum Ghz per core (3.5-4.0 or overclocked).
  • RAM: At least 16GB, the higher the Mhz count in that RAM the more boost you can get from it.
  • GPU: Get an Nvidia card over a Radeon, Nvidia has better OpenGL support which is what WWII Online runs off of, and players who have Nvidia experience better frames per second and in general it's smoother.
  • SSD: A solid state drive as compared to a mechanical hard drive will boost all of your application and operating system load times.
  • Internet Connection: Connected to ethernet cable (not WiFi) ensures solid connectivity. We recommend at least 10mbps up and down, go to http://speedtest.net to verify your connection speed and consider upgrading if you need to with your provider.

All of these things help you to experience WWII Online with better performance and less buggy-ness. For any guidance or request for assistance in upgrading your machine, you can always head over to the main forums for our community to weigh in on it, or you can contact our support team and we'll help you directly.

MISSION TARGET CHANGE

Players have asked for the ability to change a Mission's Target for some time now. The premise is that a player that created a mission has taken off from an AF after creating a mission to a town where an attack was happening but within the time that they make it to Target, that Target has either went away or a higher priority Target has come up. Moving to this new Target, while still on the same mission, doesn't allow those players to see the Target chat or map markings for the new Target.

We are working to provide a solution for the Mission Leader to be able to select a new target during the mission so as to avoid participants having to despawn and generate a new mission.

HUD ELEMENTS OPACITY

We're bringing the ability to update several Heads Up Display elements like the mini-map and chat so you can change its opacity (transparency). This sort of customization will help you create a HUD that better suits your style of game play and can potentially review more on your screen without the loss of essential information that these HUD elements provide.

INTERACTIVE ROADMAP PROGRESS (TRELLO)

In an effort to keep your more in the loop of progress being made, which we believe is important as shown by our routine Friday developer updates, we're going a little further this time to include a work flow progress inside of WWII Online's Public Trello (2021 Roadmap).

As tasks progress we'll move them forward, and if you click on the card (task names) themselves you'll see commentary we add to it as we go along. We reserve the right to make any changes at any time, including adding or removing tasks listed.

Note: Some tasks may bounce back and forth from Testing --> In Progress based on actual developments.

Workflow key:
  • New: Task is assigned and standing by for development.
  • In Progress: Task is being actively worked on.
  • Testing: Task is approaching / has entered the testing cycle(s).
  • Verification: Task is confirmed as completed.
  • Pending Deployment: Standing by for public release.
  • Completed: Players have downloaded the update which includes this (release candidate phase).

WWII ONLINE'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY

This year is a very exciting one, a massive milestone to say the least for our community and development team. CHIMM and TMAN are working closely together to make sure we have a very special anniversary of June 6th and you should keep an eye out for events and special announcements.

We'd like to thank you for your tremendous support in making this possible, because without you here and staying subscribed, we simply couldn't have made it. Let's also take some time to acknowledge all of our veteran players and staff members throughout the years who have also made this astounding achievement possible.

Cornered Rat Software remains committed to the betterment and future growth of WWII Online. Many things are being worked on still behind the scenes that are not listed here, which we'll share with you as the year progresses and these tasks mature.

We hope to see those veteran players show back up and continue to support us, so do your part in spreading this message and encouraging them to rejoin your squad. This will help populate the game and provide the development team with essential resources so as to continue the vibrant, and expanding development that CRS has demonstrated over many years now.

Here's some important information about Welcome Back Soldier :

Community report From the Desk of the Allied Commander in Chief

Day 45, Campaign 177

"Allies,

This past week we have been tested. Monday morning, we were 3 towns from losing the pocket at Bertrix. Friday, we woke up to having half a british division cut off just South of the airfield. Through a weekend push, we captured 23 towns, cut off 7 more, and lost a few. It was a sight to behold. HC from all over has been stepping up, notably Cobra at DO’s, dubane taking over OICs at objectives, dontmove shuffling flags in mornings before we all could get on to give us better positions for later in the day, as well as an occasional MOIC by committee, flawless transition from one guy to the next. Players have even been reporting more to their HC with asking for priorities, checking in at towns and FBs, or showing their squad and asking what they can do to help.

Everyone is doing all the little jobs: FB busting/monitoring, CP guarding, truck driving, text comms, marking enemies, backline interdiction, and it shows. We’re keeping it light hearted on our Side channel, having fun fighting alongside each other, and taking towns.

With Verdun secured once again and Bertrix buffered, it is time for the High Command to take a look at the strategic plan for what comes next. Welcome Back Soldier has started, so now is the perfect time to call up old squadmates to log in, support each other, blow up some tigers, shoot up some STG44s, and keep pushing eastward."
