🦋Happy Holidays & A First Look at Teen Edmund from Save the Villainess!

[p][/p][p]Dear Villains and Villainesses,[/p][p][/p][p]This is Tanya and Emily, the dynamic duo behind Save the Villainess, wishing you a very happy end to your year! If you celebrate the holidays, we wish you the best time imaginable… and if you don’t, we hope you stay warm and cozy and hopefully still get a few days off from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We’re here to bring you a little holiday art (courtesy of the great Rui) and display the glories of a teenaged Edmund. We hope you ring in a great end of the year with them! [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]This month, we finished programming the character model of younger teenaged Edmund, which was lovingly created by the artists over at Somate Studio. As you can see below, teen Edmund is adorable and was inspired by another young, dreamy crown prince that set the hearts of young girls afire in his youth. Can you guess who that other crown prince is…?[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Something else to notice is that when he was younger, Edmund dressed in a far more flamboyant fashion than he does as an adult. While his adult self quietly displays his mastery of the Alpin metallurgic magic through the flashing threads of his necktie and gold chain, the younger Edmund is a little more eager to show off his mastery of metal and status. [/p][p][/p][p]Can you guess what happened to change him over the years…? [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]In other news, we have been busy holiday elves doing a lot of work before we took our year-end break. First, we completed the writing and revisions for scenes 31, 32, and 33. Scenes 31 and 32 are made up of an interesting and complicated deductive puzzle you must unravel using the information you just learned in the past scenes. Can you find out more about why Jane is in so much trouble? [/p][p][/p][p]Then, we coded scene 30, which is your first glimpse of Edmund with the younger version of Jane in the game. Want a little preview of them giving you their holiday greetings? Look at the video below!
[/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]We also coded scenes 31 and 32. These scenes include a complex and intertwined series of deductive choices that can lead to either a revelation… or a horrifying death. [/p][p][/p][p]We look forward to seeing how closely you’ve been paying attention to the information you’ve received about Carcosa’s many dangers… though you always have the option of using story mode or our free or paid walkthroughs to help you through this and other puzzles![/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Thank you for spending another year with us, friends! We accomplished so much in terms of writing, editing, and programming our game. We had so much fun sharing our work with you and hearing from you all along the way. This game would not be possible without your support, warmth, and care![/p][p][/p][p]In 2026, we are excited to continue writing and programming our game. We got so much done this year by animating so many sprites, art assets, bad endings, and deductions in this game. We look forward to sharing more with you next year![/p][p][/p][p]Finally, remember you can always find us at the various sites below:[/p][p][/p][p]✦ Our discord server - come chat with us and hear what other players have discovered about our game![/p][p][/p][p]✦ Our mailing list - we send out cute kitten pictures and free cards featuring new banter from our main characters every month. 🦋Celebrating Ben's Birthday and Bookish Betrayals at Save the Villainess!

[p][/p][p]Dear Villains and Villainesses,[/p][p][/p][p]This is Tanya and Emily, the dastardly duo behind Save the Villainess! We hope you’ve been staying warm and getting ready to feast now that we’re in the last few days of November. In this update, we’re excited to share our celebration of Ben’s birthday (with thanks to Rui for the adorable Ben birthday fanart) and talk about our game updates![/p][p][/p][p]
[/p][p]This month, we’re celebrating the birthday of our dear childhood friend, Ben! As you can see from the video below, Ben has experienced some shenanigans during his birthday… only some of which are tied to Jane. Who else came along to give Ben a birthday surprise? You’ll have to see the video to find out![/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][p][/p][p]This month, before the holiday rush, we completed all of our programming for the very lengthy and very important scenes 28 and 29. These scenes contain several important romantic choices and vital information about the political situation in Carcosa. The choices will help you learn more about and potentially woo Prince Edmund Alpin, the future king of Carcosa. Meanwhile, the information will help you keep your villainess alive to face another day. [/p][p][/p][p]Keep careful track of all the information about Edmund’s family… the royals who rule may be some of the most dangerous of all![/p][p]
Meanwhile, we started animating Teen Edmund, the star of the upcoming scene 30! We began this process by exporting over a hundred layers from his Photoshop (PSD) file. We will experiment with those layers and eventually program his basic character model next month – a process that takes upward of 100 hours to complete. We did about 20 hours this month and will continue with more next month.[/p][p][/p][p]Finally, we completed the writing and revisions for scenes 31, 32, and 33, which intertwine to create a complicated deductive puzzle you must unravel using the information you learned in the past scenes. As a bonus, the bad ending you get for solving the puzzle incorrectly has some interesting implications for how ‘honest’ the Alpins may be…[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Finally, we're proud to announce that this year, Save the Villainess took part in Steam's Games from Vancouver festival. Please come join us in celebrating some great Steam games from the cold and crisp north![/p][p]

[/p][p]We finish with a hope that you stay warm and cozy as the winter continues and for those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, we hope you have all the turkey and fixings you desire. See you again next month for more villainy and excitement - as well as a video of Teen Edmund![/p][p][/p][p]Finally, remember you can always find us at the various sites below:[/p][p][/p][p]✦ Our discord server - come chat with us and hear what other players have discovered about our game![/p][p][/p][p]✦ Our mailing list - we send out cute kitten pictures and free cards featuring new banter from our main characters every month. 🦋Shivery Scares and Sensations from Save the Villainess!

[p][/p][p]Dear Villains and Villainesses,[/p][p][/p][p]Tanya and Emily - the villainous pair behind Save the Villainess - wish a Happy All Hallow’s Eve to our wicked ones! We’re celebrating with more commissioned Halloween fanart from the amazing Rui (of course Servant would suck out your vital fluids while Jane is ready to send you a hex!) and fun updates about our game’s progress. Plus, we have a new segment of Emily's History Corner that reviews the historical haunted houses that have influenced our game’s House. Are you ready for tales of creeping horror from centuries past…?[/p][p][/p][p]This month, we wanted to showcase a beautiful map created by Saleha Chowdhury, who also worked on the backgrounds and creatures of our game. The wildly talented Saleha created a map that highlights the most important (if unimaginatively titled) locations of the kingdom of Carcosa. [/p][p]
[/p][p]She also gave dozens of layers to play around in programming, which allowed us to bring this map to life when we programmed scene 27 this month. In this scene, Jane experiences some of the strange phenomena in the fantasy land of Carcosa first hand… including the terrifying sight of dancing trees.[/p][p][/p][p]You might ask… why are the trees dancing in this story? You can find the answer in the game itself or learn it earlier by reading our free prequel novel, The Villainess Wants Her Prince to Live! Just keep in mind that every oddity in our game is planned and tied to our world-building and sometimes to the unusual powers that our cast wields…[/p][p][/p][p]Besides programming scene 27, we also finished programming scene 26, a lore-heavy scene that required new item animations. Specifically, we finished creating all of the writing in the books, superimposing text on top of Saleha Chowdhury’s book pages. We also programmed the books to “flip” from one page to another in a seamless fashion. A sneak peek of a history book that Jane reads a few pages of is below![/p][p]
[/p][p]Of course, this history book presents a rather… biased viewpoint of Carcosa’s terrible history of colonizing and then eliminating the native people of the land they colonized. How does this dark history play a role in the endings that your villainess experiences? Only your choices can answer that question! [/p][p][/p][p]We began the programming for the very lengthy upcoming scene 28 by placing characters in important positions. We will complete our programming of the actual text and choices of this multi-part scene next month. [/p][p][/p][p]We also finalized our writing for scene 29, where Jane has an encounter with the potentially dangerous but decidedly adorable Prince Edmund Alpin! This complex scene offers deeper glimpses of Edmund and may offer clues to his role in the larger mystery of the story. You’ll get to make several romantic choices in this scene that can raise or lower affection with Edmund while giving you critical information on him. You’ll also need to use what you learn in this scene to make a life-saving deduction later in the game. [/p][p][/p][p]Finally, we completed our writing for scene 30, which will include your first glimpse of one of our new character models, purchased using our Kickstarter funding. We’ll share more on this model and scene soon! [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]This month in Emily’s History Corner, we’re excited to tell you about some of the historical influences that have shaped our design of House, the possibly sentient murder manor that will gleefully spend its time sending you horrors as you play Save the Villainess.[/p][p]
[/p][p]A 1849 sketch of the Chamber of Horrors at Madame Tussaud's wax museum [/p][p]Our first historical influence comes from Madame Tussaud’s Chamber of Horrors, which first appeared in advertising in 1843. This Chamber of Horrors included wax reproductions of the severed head of the tragic villainess Marie Antoinette along with other guillotine victims of the French Revolution. Though there were obviously haunted houses that existed long before the Chamber of Horrors, this represented one of the first popular attempts at making money from a deliberately haunted space. [/p][p][/p][p]This idea of something deliberately created to be terrifying affected how we develop the ‘story’ of House in Save the Villainess. However, this now raises another question. If the House in our game is meant to be terrifying, what is its true nature and purpose…?
[/p][p]1892 sketch of the Yellow Wallpaper from The New England Magazine[/p][p]
Keeping true to our Victorian and Edwardian roots, another major influence on the atmosphere and design of House comes from the classic 1892 horror story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This story details the potential mental breakdown of a vulnerable woman whose husband keeps her locked away from society in a secluded attic after she gives birth. Suffice to say that our own construction of House was influenced by Gilman’s conception of a kind of horror that requires no monsters but ourselves and the ‘loving’ people around us. [/p][p][/p][p]The Flammarion Engraving, 1888
[/p][p]Finally, one of the greatest influences on House’s design comes from the alien geometries depicted by Ambrose Bierce (who also lent us the ancient city of Carcosa) and H. P. Lovecraft. The idea of spaces and creatures that don’t conform to human understanding but make a horrifying kind of sense as you fall deeper into their world was very appealing to us. Everything in the House operates on Rules… but we can’t guarantee those Rules are going to be helpful. [/p][p][/p][p]On a more practical note, having spaces that alter and shift between one another allows us to create connections and stories in the way the House itself works. Can you decipher what this strange place is trying to tell you?[/p][p][/p][p]We wish you a happy and haunted All Hallow’s Eve, friends. May you carry these ideas of a haunted house within you as you play your tricks and find your treats. Who knows… perhaps a little haunting within a house may find its way to you?
