Though we’re in the midst of a blizzard, we hope you stay toasty and are excited to tease you with more game progress, a glimpse of a gorgeous new background, and mailing-list-exclusive Valentine’s cards. This month, we got the pleasure of programming a fantastic new location - the solarium! [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]The solarium is an important background that Jane will revisit continually throughout the game, depending on the choices you make. The upcoming scenes 36 to 41 take place in this magical and plant-filled space, which is why we needed to animate the solarium beforehand. [/p][p][/p][p]The solarium consists of hundreds of art layers from Karel Kok (who did the lovely main background) and Saleha Chowdhury, who created the beautiful plants that are around the solarium. These plants are deliberately designed to mimic actual plants used in Victorian-era solariums. You can see an example of those plants in the litograph below ('Laeken' by Arthur Byrne), which depicts the royal greenhouses of Laeken in Brussels, Belgium. [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]To program the solarium, we went through several combinations of layers until we figured out the optimal ones to use at various zooms to suggest a beautiful, wild, and even dangerous bloom of plants and flowers around Jane.[/p][p][/p][p]Of course, these plants aren’t planted for their beauty alone. Those who have read Save the Villainess’ free prequel novel know that the Neville family that Lady Jane Neville hails from has a special connection to plants. So keep your eyes on those leaves, lovelies. They’ll play a big role eventually…[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]After we revised the solarium, we also programmed scene 36, which offers a magical interaction with a certain white-haired Duke of the North within the solarium. After all, if Jane’s going to ‘train’ to overcome future obstacles, who would serve as a better guide than a man who wants to train her to survive? However, it’s still important to consider what she may be surviving and what the cost of survival means…[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Next month, to set up scenes 37 and 38, we’ll program Jane’s and Izel’s action models. In anticipation of that, we have exported the dozens of Photoshop (PSD) Layer files that will allow us to change their regular character model to an action model that can take part in action scenes. We’ll continue programming those action models and related scenes next month. [/p][p][/p][p]Writing-wise, we continued to shape the solarium-related scenes by writing and editing scenes 39, 40, and 41. These scenes involve a surprising reveal about Jane’s past, a new mystery for you to solve, and a great deal of conditional dialogue. Though the weather may or may not be chilly where you are (personally, we’re freezing!), we hope you have much good fortune ahead of you. We’re here to celebrate Servant’s birthday, share our game progress, and share our focus on mysteries. Plus this month, our mailing list is offering cards that share what our characters expect to experience in the coming year. Will you be as optimistic, or grimly determined to survive, as them?[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]This month, we're celebrating the birthday of Servant, our extremely-normal and not-at-all-unsettling butlermaid! Beyond Rui’s gorgeous commissioned artwork of them, we have the following message containing their preferred present.[/p][p][/p][p]Won’t you do them a favor and listen in?[/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][p][/p][p]We started off this year with a bang! First off, we programmed the complex and intertwined scenes 33, 34, and 35. Scene 33 contains an interesting romantic choice while we set up a new animation involving a new art asset for scene 34. We won’t say much more… only that if it puts a chill down your spine, we did our job. We also completed programming for scene 35, which will take Jane to the next area and which contains a significant amount of conditional dialogue based on your choices. [/p][p][/p][p]Finally, one of these scenes contains a complex animation sequence containing Edmund’s new action character model, which took about 20 hours of work to complete. Now that we have it working though, you'll find that Edmund is capable of many new maneuvers, including...[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]The brandishing of ominous letters, which may or may not hold vital clues![/p][p][/p][p]We also reviewed our existing outlines of Scenes 36 to 40. These scenes are very complex and important ones that bring back a returning fan favorite character in a new environment replete with its own mysteries and revelations. Jane will learn some very important information about the original Lady Jane Neville. We reviewed these scenes to make sure our writing properly conveys character details and lore, even as we worked toward an important mystery deduction sequence. [/p][p][/p][p]Additionally, we wrote out scenes 36, 37, and 38. We focused on adding more interactions and love choices between Jane and a certain love interest. Want to know more about how this love interest deals with the horrors in their life, as well as how this love interest seeks to prepare Jane for future horrors? You’ll find out much more in this section, especially if you’re bold enough to try out both the affection-raising and affection-lowering love choices. Remember - both choices reward you with completely different skits and different information on the characters! [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]This month, we also took part in Steam Detective Fest 2026. After all, though Save the Villainess is a game that allows you to find love and fulfillment in nine different happy endings, you can only do so after you have foiled several dozen murder attempts.
