Pompeii: The Legacy News

Roman city builder Pompeii The Legacy is available to try now, but not for long

Right now, Paradox and Colossal Order are celebrating the tenth anniversary of Cities Skylines. The modern metropolitan take on the city building genre is one of the best you can play on PC today, even with CS2 still pulling itself up by its bootstraps. As someone with a love of history, though, I've had my eye on Pompeii: The Legacy for some time. This Ancient Roman take on the genre blends fact, fiction, and logistics into an all-new experience, and you can try it now ahead of launch.

Pre-Alpha Footage & Steam Playtest
Pure Gameplay
For a while now, many of you have been asking to see more of Pompeii: The Legacy in action. Instead of a cinematic trailer, I’ve decided to do something different—give you 30 minutes of pure, unfiltered gameplay footage from the current pre-alpha version. No scripted sequences, no heavy editing—just the game as it is right now.

Reaching this stage is a huge milestone for me as a solo developer, especially while working on my own game engine. Balancing both development and marketing has been a demanding journey, but seeing Pompeii: The Legacy take shape makes it all worthwhile. With this gameplay footage, I feel like I’ve hit the first truly major goal—being able to show the game in action and let you experience what I’ve been building.

This footage showcases the core city-building mechanics, visuals, and atmosphere of Pompeii: The Legacy in its current state. However, it's important to note that this is not the final version—things are still evolving!
Looking Ahead: Steam Playtest Improvements
The Steam Playtest launches in mid-March, and your feedback from this pre-alpha gameplay footage will be invaluable in shaping the final experience. If you haven't already, sign up on Steam to be among the first to try it!

Here’s what’s set to improve before the Playtest:

 • Enhanced Visuals – Expect more polished textures, refined lighting, and added environmental details to bring the city to life.
 • Gameplay Refinements – The game’s pacing will be adjusted, with faster construction times and a greater emphasis on bonuses & upgrades.
 • More Buildings – The Playtest will feature additional structures, including mines and metal processing buildings, expanding the depth of production chains.
 • Expanded Citizen Needs – Hygiene will play a more significant role, introducing new buildings like barber shops and public latrines to maintain health and morale.
 • Trade System – Missing from the current footage, but fully implemented for the Playtest, allowing for economic strategy and trade between cities.
 • Military & City Defense – While not yet in-game, walls, soldiers, and combat mechanics are planned for post-Playtest development, adding another strategic layer to Pompeii’s survival.
Thank You for Your Support!
Dev Blog 5: Trade and Logistics in Pompeii: The Legacy

In the ancient Roman world, trade and logistics were the lifeblood of a thriving city. No matter how prosperous a settlement might be, its survival and growth depended on an intricate network of trade routes and the efficient movement of resources. In Pompeii: The Legacy, I’ve worked to capture the essence of this dynamic system, giving players the tools to forge connections across the empire while managing the logistical needs of their city. This dev blog will offer a closer look at how trade and logistics come to life in the game.
The Map of an Empire
The first glimpse into the trade system is the map of the Roman Empire, set in 100 A.D. This map highlights the coastal cities with which players can establish trade agreements. These agreements open opportunities for resource exchanges, allowing Pompeii to thrive by importing essential goods or exporting surplus resources. The map serves as a gateway to the interconnected world of Roman commerce, where strategy and negotiation shape the fate of your city.
Envoys: The Diplomats of Trade and More
Trade agreements don’t just happen—they require skilled negotiation. Players can send envoys to cities across the empire to secure deals, strengthen alliances, or even propose marriages that benefit their family’s legacy. The envoy panel offers multiple options, from establishing lucrative trade routes to forging powerful family ties. Each decision made on this screen can have lasting impacts on both the prosperity of Pompeii and the strength of its relationships.
Granary: Feeding the Population
Logistics isn’t just about trade—it’s also about managing the resources within your city. The Granary plays a critical role in storing food, ensuring that your population remains fed and healthy. Properly managing your food stockpiles will be essential, especially when natural disasters or other challenges arise. The Granary is a central piece of your logistical puzzle, balancing supply and demand to keep Pompeii running smoothly.
Warehouse: The Backbone of Resource Management
For non-food resources, the Warehouse becomes indispensable. Stone, wood and other materials needed for construction and production are stored here. Players must plan their city’s resource logistics carefully, ensuring that materials are readily available when needed. A well-managed Warehouse is the key to efficient city-building and sustainable growth.

In Pompeii: The Legacy, trade and logistics are more than background mechanics—they are the foundation of a thriving city. Whether it’s negotiating with distant cities, organizing your storages, or planning your supply routes, every decision you make shapes Pompeii’s future.
