Shifting Sands Dev Log #2: Don the Masks. Embrace Divine
Hello, Chieftains!
[p][/p]
Welcome back to Maggie's DevLog!
[p][/p][p]So, how did last time's tour through the world of Shifting Sands feel? I'm willing to bet more than a few Chieftains are already counting down the days until April 10 so they can set foot in this new land for themselves—but not so fast.[/p][p][/p][p]Whenever we talk about the world of Soulmask—even when it's a brand-new one—there's one thing we can never ignore:[/p][p][/p][p]The Mask.[/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]Yes, the very thing in the game's title. In Soulmask, it is the vessel of your awareness, your everything, and the key to uncovering the truth of this world. Together with the civilization behind it, it shaped this strange and wondrous world—and grants you power beyond mortal limits.[/p][p]
[/p][p]From a design perspective, the Mask system is the most distinctive and most central progression system in Soulmask. And in Shifting Sands, we've given that system a full evolution. Drawing inspiration from the Egyptian mythology we love, each Mask now embodies the authority of a god—and brings with it a whole new set of powerful combat abilities.[/p][p][/p][p]Of course, power also means challenge. A brand-new lineup of deadly divine Guardians is already waiting for you.[/p][p][/p][p]So let's begin, and take a look at how Soulmask's most important core system comes to life in Shifting Sands.[/p]

Don the Masks; Embrace Divine.
[p]If you're new to Soulmask, there's no better time for a quick briefing on our core Mask system:[/p][p][/p][p]What is a Mask?[/p][p]It is the vessel that carries your awareness, and the core progression system at the heart of Soulmask. In this world, the body you control can be anyone—but the Mask is what preserves your awareness and grants you extraordinary power.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Scanning an area for danger, intimidating barbarians into becoming loyal tribesmen, even possessing and controlling any character in your tribe and using their talents and skills—these are all powers of the Mask.[/p][p]
[/p][p]More importantly, every Mask comes with unique divine abilities and attribute bonuses. As your Mask evolves, your character is no longer merely human—you become a god walking among mortals.[/p][p]
[/p][p]And in the Shifting Sands DLC, what we really wanted to achieve was this: the Mask shouldn't feel like just another system. It should feel like a complete journey—from an ordinary survivor to someone who truly walks beside the gods.[/p][p][/p][p]In the world of Golden Sands, the Mask's power comes directly from the gods who once ruled this land. Every new Mask is a manifestation of divine authority.[/p][p][/p][p]And there is only one way to claim them: find and defeat the Guardians created by the gods of creation—Behemoths that wield divine power.[/p][p][/p][p]Gather materials. Start with basic bone gear. Raid barbarian camps to recruit elite warriors, seize the materials and advanced weapons hidden in their chests, arm your warband—and then march on the pyramids.[/p][p][/p][p]And kill them.[/p]

Horus, God of the Sky | Flight, Freedom, Exploration
[p]
Do you remember the opening we mentioned in the last dev log? On that high platform in the upside-down anti-gravity world, the Mask you repaired was Celestial Wings—the crystallized power of Horus, leader of the gods and ruler of the sky.[/p][p]
[/p][p]This is the first Mask you will obtain in Golden Sands, and it was designed specifically around the survival pace of this new world:[/p][p]
[/p][p]Passive Ability: When your Health drops below a critical threshold, incoming attacks no longer reduce your HP—instead, they trigger healing. Put simply, you get a second life. For Chieftains venturing into an unfamiliar world where danger can strike at any moment, this is the most reliable insurance you could ask for.[/p][p][/p][p]Mimicry State: Once Horus's power is activated, you can fall from any height with no fall damage whatsoever. Instead, you spread your wings and glide freely through the air. In a world like Golden Sands, full of dramatic verticality and elevation changes, this isn't just stylish—it's one of the most practical movement tools you can have.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Mimicry Skill — Hyper Wings: Summon a pair of radiant wings and soar freely through the world. You can also dive from the sky and trigger a massive explosion on impact, blasting every nearby enemy off their feet.[/p][p]
[/p][p]*Peter has already played around with this an absurd number of times... and somehow he still isn't tired of it.[/p][p]Celestial Wings is your starting Mask in Golden Sands, but don't get the wrong idea—it is absolutely not just a "starter Mask." As you unlock more of its skill tree and strengthen it with Redstone, it can evolve into a full high-mobility aerial combat build. But if you want more options, you'll need to face something far more dangerous.[/p]

Sobek, Crocodile God of the Abyss | Power, Savagery, Control
[p][/p]
Guardian: Sobek Crocodile
[p]
[/p][p]The first Guardian-tier boss you'll face in Golden Sands is the giant beast lurking deep in the River Delta and wetlands: the Sobek Crocodile.[/p][p]
[/p][p]As the embodiment of Sobek, god of floodwaters, Sobek Crocodile commands both water and fire. It can summon electrified torrents to drag you beneath the surface—or turn you to ash in flames.[/p][p]
[/p][p]In our design, Sobek Crocodile is a war of attrition that demands excellent positioning and timing. Its attacks cover a huge area, and trying to confront it head-on is absolutely the wrong call.[/p][p]
*Also, yes—it really likes biting people.[/p][p][/p]
Mask: Abyss Overlord
[p]
[/p][p]The moment Sobek Crocodile falls, Sobek's power becomes yours—Abyss Overlord, a Mask built for Chieftains who love a playstyle that only gets tougher the longer the fight goes on:[/p][p][/p][p]Passive Ability: Every time you kill an enemy, their life force is converted into bonus Armor for you, which means this: the more enemies you kill, the harder you are to kill. When surrounded by large groups, you'll snowball harder and harder as the fight goes on.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Mimicry State: Floodwaters continuously swirl around you, periodically negating a fixed number of incoming hits. It doesn't matter whether that damage comes from a dagger or a heavy crossbow bolt—it's all nullified.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Mimicry Skill — Fluid Prison: You command the water in the air around you and trap enemies inside a prison of water. This is a large-area crowd control skill. Enemies caught inside cannot move, and they also take continuous drowning damage.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Picture this: you enter a Holy Ruin, and mechanical bodies come swarming toward you. One Fluid Prison locks them all in place, then you carve through them one by one. Every kill makes your Armor thicker, and by the time the last enemy falls, you've become a walking fortress. It's an ideal Mask for high-damage, high-difficulty Ruins and dungeon encounters.[/p]

Anubis, Guardian of the Duat | Souls, Judgment, Resurrection
[p][/p]
Guardian: Anubis Hound
[p]
[/p][p]Deep within the grand abandoned temples of the Dune Region, the second Guardian awaits—the Anubis Hound, avatar of Anubis, god of the underworld.[/p][p][/p][p]If Sobek Crocodile tests your positioning, then Anubis Hound tests your reactions and your composure. This thing can switch freely between its physical body and an afterimage form. One second it's snarling right in front of you—the next, it slips through your defenses as a flickering spirit and tears across your back with its claws.[/p][p]
[/p][p]It can also fire sand-spike projectiles that slow your time. That means even if you can track where it is, you may not be able to move effectively at all. But if you collect the afterimages it leaves behind, you can negate that slow effect and fight it head-on on equal footing.[/p][p]
[/p][p]This battle is built around uncertainty. You never know where it will jump next, what move it will use, or sometimes even how to close the distance. But I believe all of you will find your own way to bring it down.[/p][p]
*Round and round... and round...[/p][p][/p]
Mask — Final Judgment
[p]![]()
Anubis's power becomes a Mask full of dark, merciless justice—Final Judgment. If you love the kind of combat style that turns your enemy's cruelty back on them, then this Mask was made for you:[/p][p][/p][p]Passive Ability: Any negative status effect applied to you is mirrored back via an additional effect on your attacks. Enemy poisoned you? Your next strike will poison them too. Set you on fire? Your attacks will ignite them in return. The more they try to weaken you, the more they drag themselves into the exact same suffering.[/p][p]
[/p][p]This Mask is judgment by design—it doesn't make you immune to pain, but it makes sure the one inflicting that pain pays the same price.[/p][p][/p][p]Mimicry Skill — Final Judgment: Deliver a death sentence to all enemies within a 10-meter radius. If a marked enemy dies within 10 seconds, its soul does not fade away—it rises again as your loyal Duat servant and continues the fight.[/p][p]
[/p][p]That's right—your enemies become your army. The longer the battle lasts, the more souls you harvest, and the bigger the undead force behind you becomes. This is a true snowball Mask that only gets stronger in prolonged fights, especially when assaulting massive sand bandit checkpoints or high-difficulty barracks.[/p]

Amun-Ra, the Radiant Sun God | Sun, Glory, Destruction
[p][/p]
Guardian: Onyx Scarab
[p]
[/p][p]Deep in the red dunes of the river valley, the Onyx Scarab—guardian of Amun-Ra's Mask—lies in wait beneath the sand.[/p][p][/p][p]As the divine guardian tied to the power that created anti-gravity Solar Barque and gave an entire ancient civilization the power of flight, this fight does not test one isolated skill the way the previous Guardians did—it tests your ability to deal damage, and deal it fast.[/p][p]
[/p][p]The Onyx Scarab will roll its dung ball—yes, a dung ball—at you at terrifying speed, and command endless swarms of insect offspring to erupt from the ground and devour your flesh.[/p][p]
[/p][p]It can also compress that dung ball into a blazing miniature sun, rolling it slowly across the battlefield while firing intense heat rays and volleys of light. When badly wounded, it can even draw on solar power to recover its HP.[/p][p]
[/p][p]You'll need to dish out heavy damage at the right moments to interrupt its healing—and even destroy its dung ball, which leaves it extremely vulnerable for a short time. But all of that depends on one thing first: surviving the storm of solar beams raining down on you.[/p][p]
*Yes, one of the Onyx Scarab's core mechanics is, in fact, a dung ball. I sincerely hope that doesn't... put you off too much (lol).[/p][p][/p]
Mask — Glorious Hymn
[p][/p][p]When the Onyx Scarab falls, the power of Amun-Ra becomes yours—Glorious Hymn.[/p][p][/p][p]This is the most destructive Mask in Golden Sands. Not defense. Not control. Not fancy debuff tricks. What it offers is pure, overwhelming, solar-scale destructive power.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Passive Ability: While in Mimicry State, every one of your weapon attacks gains Solar Flame damage, and your body becomes like a continuously fusing core, burning every enemy who comes too close. Simply standing beside you becomes its own punishment.[/p][p][/p][p]Mimicry Skill — Searing Laser: You quite literally become the sun. The Mask unleashes devastating solar radiance, igniting every enemy within sight. And when those burning enemies die, their life force is converted into Mask energy, feeding your next cast.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Killing creates energy. Energy creates more killing—a perfect cycle of destruction.[/p][p][/p][p]You can stand in the center of a massive barbarian fortress, activate Searing Laser, and watch dozens of enemies collapse one after another in the sunlight—their deaths becoming the fuel that sustains your next wave of destruction. That is what it feels like to wield the power of the sun god.[/p]

Mask Evolving: Build a God That Feels Like Yours
[p]By this point, I think you've already noticed: these four Masks all support completely different combat styles—[/p]
[/p][p]For example, Final Judgment pairs beautifully with wide-area weapons or tools, allowing you to keep harvesting crowds and converting them into an undead army. Abyss Overlord enables a shield-free, two-handed playstyle without the vulnerability of losing your block. And Glorious Hymn, combined with a high-defense shield-focused setup, can even let you slowly burn down powerful enemies without taking a hit.[/p][p]
[/p][p]And beyond the growth of the skill tree itself, remember the Ruin rewards we mentioned in the last dev log? Redstone—these mysterious crystals from an ancient civilization—can grant your Mask random stat bonuses. Every Redstone comes with different affixes, which means even if two Chieftains use the same Mask, their final builds can still feel completely different.[/p][p]
*But—the true depth of this system is yet to be revealed...[/p]

Finally — The Mask Is Your Greatest Trophy
[p][/p][p]The Mask is the finest trophy in Golden Sands. Every Mask is proof that you personally defeated one of the gods' Guardians—that you led your tribesmen across the scorching desert and through sandstorms in your airship, broke through sand bandit blockades, pushed into the deadliest Ruins, and stood beside the corpse of a colossal beast with that incredible feeling of:[/p][p][/p][p]"I did it."[/p][p][/p][p]Then you put it on, step back into the world, and swagger through it like your own the place—that's the experience we want every Chieftain to have.[/p][p][/p][p]But if the Mask is your power, then there is also your home in Golden Sands—your airship.[/p][p]![]()
As the greatest legacy of the age of the gods, anti-gravity Solar Barque technology is more than just a means of transport. It is your mobile base, your tribe checkpoint, your armed fortress, and everything you rely on to survive in this floating world.[/p][p]![]()
We have so much to say about the ship system—but that will have to wait for the next dev log.[/p][p]I'm Maggie, your Community Manager, and I'll be back next week with more news![/p]
