Patch Notes May 28

Today we are releasing our third bug fix and tuning update for Monster Train 2 after launch. We didn't make Steam posts for the prior updates so I will merge all notes from all patches into this post. In the future, we will do a post each time.

We are working on more bug fixes, quality of life improvements, and non-English translation improvements. Those will be releasing soon.

Changes:

  1. Seraph Aeternus - The Dominant: No longer continues to apply his action trigger during Relentless.
  2. Room cards should now show the proper mastery frame in the Logbook.
  3. Fixed being able to spam click Pyre Heart ability activation.
  4. Fixed a softlock under certain conditions when the 'Curse of Friendly Fire' mutator is present.
  5. Fixed duplicate endless artifacts removed when restarting battle in Endless mode.
  6. Fixed some softlocks and other bugs with secret content. See the mt2-spoilers-chat channel in Discord for more information.
  7. Made some small stat changes to Pyre Hearts that were notably performing outside of a median range. Very slightly decreased health on Pyre of Dominion, Malicka's Shifting Pyre, and Heart of the Pact. Very slightly increased health on Bogwurm's Growth.
  8. Fixed the fact that only Shield Steward damage was counting toward unlock progress.
  9. Herzal's Horde unlock condition increased from 8000 >>> 10000.
  10. Fixed some typos and missing tooltips.
  11. Heart of the Pact unlock condition reduced from 9 >>> 7.
  12. Buffed stats of various units and cards that I won't mention due to spoilers.,
  13. Fixed Battle 7 "Savagery's Final Assault" battle showing incorrect enemy in battle preview screen.
  14. Fixed Fel champ Savior ability causing a softlock under certain rare conditions.
  15. Fixed 'Mitosis Cap' created unit duplicates not receiving the Ascetic Absolution upgrade from the Penance Fields story event.
  16. Changed Enfeebling Infusion's default target on keyboard/controller to target the enemy team.
  17. Fixed part of the map victory animation that was broken.
  18. Fixed Gravity mutator triggering during the deployment phase.
  19. Hid certain run configuration options that could be problematic if used before enough content was unlocked.
  20. Fixed French translation of Prismatic Dragonscale. It said it triggered at the start of battle but it's actually the end.
  21. Improved Japanese translation of Artificer trigger description.
  22. The Undying One "Resolve: Gain Reanimate 6" trigger moved from Covenant 0 to Covenant 4.
  23. Luna Coven unlock condition decreased from 70 >>> 40.
  24. Underlegion unlock condition decreased from 120 >>> 75.
  25. Aquath's Reservation unlock condition decreased from 15000 >>> 12000.
  26. Wyngh's Spirit unlock condition reduced from 275 >>> 225.
  27. Echo of the Time Father unlock condition reduced from 40 >>> 25.
  28. Fixed softlock that could sometimes happen when pushback Arkion killed a unit.

Roguelike deckbuilder Monster Train 2 proves a winner on Steam as players soar

There have been many challengers to Slay the Spire's throne, and my favorite among them has just made a return. Monster Train 2 is the successor to a beloved roguelike that earned itself an 'overwhelmingly positive' lifetime Steam rating from players. Putting aside the more divergent deckbuilders such as Balatro, the first Monster Train remains my most-loved entry in the genre. It's not definitively better than Slay the Spire, but I like it more; its pacing, style, and more targeted counterplay completely won my heart. Now, it's back, and the sequel is off to a phenomenal start, already outpacing its predecessor on Steam despite a simultaneous PC Game Pass launch.

The sequel to a beloved roguelike deckbuilder, Monster Train 2 is finally here

Simply due to the huge volume of them these days, and the constant flow of newcomers joining the pile, I have to admit that I'm getting a little bit burnt out when it comes to roguelike deckbuilders. Some of the greatest PC games ever reside in this strategic, highly replayable genre, but it's certainly a saturated market. However, it's hard not to get invested in Monster Train 2. Launching exactly five years on from its predecessor - one of the best rated and reviewed roguelike deckbuilders ever - it's finally arrived, and it's already meeting players' lofty expectations.

Monster Train 2 review

The roguelike deckbuilder is a remorseless evil that strives to colonise every dream ever dreamt by the human brain. It is a sparkling, shuffling plague, germinated by Slay The Spire, that threatens to absorb every other mortal pastime, from space travel through poker to carpentry. We must find a way to neutralise the entity before it assimilates us all. But in the words of the oldest proverb: just one more go. Just one more go, before I dissipate raging into that goodnight. Just one more run, before I play all those shortform avant garde releases in my Itch.io wallet.

If Monster Train 2 were the last roguelike deckbuilder I ever played, I would consider myself fairly pleased, and also very relieved. While not a huge departure from the game that plunged Matt Cox (RPS in peace) into unholy raptures, it's a great pick if you're fond of numbers going up and realising it's 1.30am and that you are now too addled by card synergies to sleep. You do not have to like or understand trains, but it's a plus.
