Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Fest!

Hey everyone, Brandon & Danny here from Nano Park Studios!

We're excited for Petal Runner to be featured in Steam's "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Fest"! We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share a closer look at some of the game's most hardworking characters - the vehicles!

Recording Motorcycle SFX

Danny recently found some time to sample some real sounds from the engine of his motorcycle, replacing the placeholder SFX that were used in development up until now.

Artwork Showcase

Cali’s motorcycle is something we’ve tuned very meticulously, in both the mechanics and artwork. Originally, we constructed 8 sprites; one for each direction in which the player could ride. After some testing, we decided to expand the artwork into 16 unique sprites - which provides a dramatic improvement to the fluidity and feel of the bike.

Of course, there are other road-based vehicles that can be seen throughout the world, with each unique district of Sapphire Valley presenting it’s own familiar makes, models, and colour schemes of NPC vehicles - like this selection of Starglow and North Valley vehicles. We scaled these sprites according to Cali’s bike, so it can feel appropriately agile in comparison.

There's a few other cool vehicles that appear throughout the game, but we’ll just leave these as a tease for now! ✌️😉🌸

July 2024 Development & Media Roundup

Hey everyone, Brandon & Danny here from Nano Park Studios!

We've been busy continuing the development of Petal Runner and we want to share a development & media roundup for this month!

Night-Time Effect Breakdown! 🌙

We put together a quick breakdown detailing how we created our night-time effect! This is accomplished by swapping out all the colours for darker & less saturated versions. Then, we apply a series of masks and these are brought back to the original day-time colours to create that glowing effect.

Check it out below!

This is a neat way to create a higher-fidelity appearance, while still keeping the colour palette relatively restricted and retro!

Brandon recently shared a timelapse showing the process of creating a new building for our game's highly skilled (and suspiciously rabbit-looking) version of a police force! 🐰 He also discusses how we take the night-time palette into consideration, when preparing assets.

Petal Runner Announcement Recap

Hey everyone, Brandon & Danny here from Nano Park Studios!

First of all, we wanted to thank everyone for checking out Petal Runner, wishlisting the game, and joining the community group!

We blasted past 20K wishlists in the FIRST week! This was way more than we were expecting, so thank you for your collective interest in the game!

Kira can't believe the wishlist numbers!

Being able to premiere our game at this year's Summer Game Fest was an incredible opportunity, and something that we couldn't have even dreamt of from the inception of this project. We've been working on this for about three years now, so it's exciting to finally share it with people, and it's been rewarding to see the positive response to the game's visuals and gameplay so far. We can't wait to share more!

In case you missed it, Brandon made a video sharing some of the events that lead to where we currently are in development. You can watch it here!
