Back from Holidays and Gamescom with a little performance patch

Development progression is back ! (slowly but surely)

So I came back from holiday and immediately dropped into Gamescom and it was good.
The game was showcases at the Indie Arena together with 150 other games. Which I guess says something about today's landscape eh.

But lo and behold at the end they handed out the booth awards , and Bulwark won best CommUnity (sponsored and managed by Unity via Twitter/X) award of the booth.

Any time where the public gets to choose is exciting and great, so what a great start of the next phase of development.

But you know me , shiney baubles and blinkey lights got me distracted, as part of the prize I got a steamdeck!!! And I booted up Bulwark and performance was a laggish 45-50fps , in an empty location.

That cannot stand. So today's update to the demo/build is a performance update aimed at lower spec machines. It stabilizes steamdeck framerate and makes it more 55-60 fps range.

I also added an ultra setting to the shadows, cuz that was easy while I was optimizing the shadow and AO.

Enjoy the little performance boost while the demo is online for a bit for Strategyfest, and let me know how it performs on your steamdeck ;)

So that's a little update, I'll be hard at work the next months, got some thinking done on the grander strategy parts of the game and I think some interesting changes are afoot.

Bulwark is part of Steam StrategyFest 2023



Hello everyone!

Just a quick update for you all that Bulwark is part of this years Steam Strategy Fest!
Coming off the back of Gamescom (Where Tomas won the Unity 'commUNITY' game vote - more on that next week!) we've joined the celebration of all pc games built around... well, building!

We'll be running this demo up until the mid point of September to allow folks who are not attending the rest of the UK physical gaming events to get their hands on Bulwark and start carving their very own civilisations out of the rock of the Great Ursee.

Those of you that have already been part of the Evolving Demo, we'll have a couple of pretty exciting announcements coming up very soon, so get in there and start practicing, or utilising the photo mode (Pro tip - hit the right stick when in photo mode for a cool time lapse of your creations) and share them with us on our socials!

Bulwark is Heading to GamesCom

We are heading to GamesCom this week. 23rd until the 27th of August you can go hands-on with Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles in the Indie Arena Booth, Hall 10.

Tiny Teams Fest 2023

GO, GO, GO!

Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles is live on the Tiny Teams Fest 2023.

Running August 3rd 6 pm BST - August 10th 6 pm BST.

Focussed on Indie games where 5 or fewer people are making the game. Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles was a perfect fit with just solo dev Tomas Sala at the helm.

Indie games will appear on the Tiny Teams sale page, but they also will be streaming games throughout the week on Steam and Twitch.

At the close of the event, we will be closing down the Bulwark evolving demo for a short period to give it an upgrade. This gives you seven days to play!


As a community, you have been fantastic and have built hundreds of thousands of Command towers, Collected millions of metric tonnes of resources and sailed further than the eye can see.

Evolving beyond the demo

Today a post about the future of Bulwark:

As you may have noticed the updates to the evolving demo have sort of trickled to a stop. This is partially natural as many issues get addressed and new options added, but I’ve also found that it’s hard for me to focus on core development when there is so much demand for changes to controls or on-boarding.

[h3]And it’s time to get some core development done. [/h3]

I want to get into the world more, develop the interactions with other factions, have proper conflict, perhaps even some naval strategy.There is also a ton of just production work I need to get done, the missing buildings and faction commanders and so forth. Basically all the good things myself and many players are dreaming of for the game.

I also need a holiday badly, this year has been quite tumultuous in unpleasant ways. So to get to the point:

[h3]After the Tiny Teams steam event august 10th , the evolving demo will be turned off and the game will go dark again. [/h3]

I am quite confident in saying that the evolving demo has brought massive changes and sometimes you all have had to be quite vocal to get your points across, but I hope and feel that the game is now so much better because of it. There are multiple control templates and options to make the game feel more accessible and there has been 6 months of iteration to get it to where it is today. And for that I am super grateful and want to thank everyone that posted here and on the discord with feedback.

So will there never be access to the demo? Of course not, there will be plenty of moments where the demo will be back, either as part of an event or just a quick test with the players off a new feature. But it won’t be there consistently.
