DevLog 10 - Washers In Motion
Welcome back, Washers! 👋
[p][/p][p]This time we’re looking at some of the animations coming to PowerWash Simulator 2 with FuturLab Animator, Alannah! [/p]

Player Character
[p]Alannah starts off with; “The third person character animations have had a big upgrade for PowerWash 2! I made a new rig in Blender for the player character model and tested the rig was all working when exported to Unity so animation work could begin! We have new and improved player animations across the board, but we also worked on setting up some new systems to improve how everything looks in game.”
[/p][p]"We have a new jump system with different animations for on the spot, walking and running jumps so the player character can play a different jump animation at the start, in mid-air and when you land to make everything feel smoother and more dynamic."
[/p][p]
"We also have new idling animations in third person as well as first person, including twirling the washer and giving it a quick polish to add some life and character!"
[/p][p]
[/p][p]
"We tried to make the transitions between animations look as clean as possible with lots of small animations to control the transitions between poses. A lot of small animations can make a big difference in how the character feels when you move around."
[/p]
Washables
[p]
Alannah continues; "Many of the levels have animations to bring the scene to life. My favourite has to be the Shooting Gallery mainly as it’s the most interactive scene in the game. There’s a whole bunch of triggerable animations, things to knock over and lights that flash every time you hit a target."
[/p][p]Alannah then went on to talk about another of her favourites, that has some really nice animations, but we're not ready to show that one off yet so we had to cut that part out - sorry Alannah![/p][p][/p]
Cats
[p]And now for a feature a lot of you have been excited for... Cats! We have Ulysses and their two kittens to keep you company during your time in PowerWash Simulator 2![/p][p][/p][p]Alannah explains; "My first day working on cat animations was the most fun! I spent a good chunk that day asking the PowerWash team for videos of their cats, watching and collating them all to use as reference and inspiration for Ulysses, Bubbles and Squeak."
[/p][p]"I made a big library of animations for Ulysses and her kittens using the videos from the PowerWash Simulator team. Ulysses and the kittens both have two core poses which they can transition between and a set of animations that can be played from each core pose. I tried to give the kittens more playful animations, like rolling around and playing, while Ulysses is calmer.
There’s also lots of small animations like a subtle tail swish, a meow or just a blink so they’re not always moving about. The small animations help to fill in the gaps and bring them to life when they’re being less active."

[/p][p]"With some help from a programmer, I set these up in game with a random trigger system so they can play any animation in their library at random and queue up animations.
There were a lot of cursed cats in the production PowerWash 2 in the process of trying to export animations to the game. Fortunately for everyone I saved some screenshots!"
