1) Update Schedule
***************
We’re working on getting programming development back on track with regular updates again at least once per month if not more. In the recent past when our code warrior was in between day jobs we would release updates as often as every few days so we’re pulling a plan together to make that happen again. Recent crew discussion has led to a pretty scary plan that, if it works, will put gas in the tank again. And if it doesn’t work? FUCK IT! We’ll try something even crazier. WOOOOOOO! “A man with nothin’ ain’t got nothin’ to lose.” ;)

2) RAZOR!
*******
Our lead artist, Mr Wrestling 5, has a day job that is only slightly kinder to his free time than our programmers’ so he’s been able to squeeze out some more art assets for our new ring editor. Our newsletter pic this week shows some new ring options that I’ve been dying to play in Pro Wrestling X since day one; chains and razor wire! Now where can a modder find a good FMW logo…

3) Quote of the Week
*****************
"No his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is".

As a Canadian musician coming of age in the 80’s, we’ll all miss you Mr. Peart. As a world in desperate of heroes, we’ll miss you even more.

4) Questions of the Week
*******************
This weeks question comes to us from the awesome crew making the Retromania game. What indie wrestler would you most want to see in a new wrestling game?

Newsletter #924

Welcome to Wrestling Gamers United Newsletter #924

2019 was not our best year for demonstrable progress. The good news is we are 100% certain what the problem is. The bad news is that the problem is me.

This newsletter is not a total downer, promise! But you gotta be honest with yourself, y’know? Shit needs to be fixed and you need to figure out what’s broken before you can fix it, right? Gotta ask for help and not be ashamed to do so. Also have to have the balls to defend your shared vision and not sell it out to anyone for any reason.

There is just SO DAMN much I want to tell you guys and talk about but once I started writing I realized this was going to be a 20+ page masterclass in TLDR if I put it all down at once. My daughter has been bugging me to record a new podcast and I think that would be the perfect way to deliver all of the news and ask all of the questions I’d love to get your help with.

Plenty to be grateful for. TONS. But also some hard changes to make. What I tried last year didn’t work. No sense doing the same fruitless things in 2020. Talked to the crew about our 2020 battle plan and they offered some extremely smart and unique solutions to our admittedly unique challenges.

So let’s talk aboot it, eh? Look for a new PWX podcast coming your way in January 2020. We’re going to work with you guys planning our future while also setting fire to some old dead weight and just watch it burn.

2019 came and went and I’m grateful for all the lessons it taught me and for the lessons it TRIED to teach me. I’m sure 2020 will introduce me to painful new ways to man up. Fun?

Have a GREAT New Years Eve party everyone! We’ll see you in the new year. Rest up ;)

P.S. Pro Wrestling X is on sale for 90% off until January 3rd on Steam :)

Newsletter #923

Welcome to Wrestling Gamers United Newsletter #923

1) Holy Shit!
**********
Pro Wrestling X is now 90% OFF(!!) during the current Steam Sale! Got 99 cents in your Steam Wallet and wanna support a passionate and tenacious indie development team? THANKS! Here’s the link:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/297310/Pro_Wrestling_X/

Straight up, we were REALLY hoping to ship a big update during this sale but…”game development is a complicated profession” and our best laid plans got put to rest by broken AI and pathfinding that caused our f’n grapple system to break when our engine was updated to “fix” what wasn’t broken for us. Totally get why the engine developers did what they did to help other genres of games being developed but the unique needs of wrestling game developers kinda got crotch chopped here.

We talked about it during our last crew meeting a few days ago and there is just no quick answer. Easy answer? Sure. Hire our programmer away from his day job and we’ll be cranking out weekly updates again like we were a year or so ago. So many of you have talked to us and offered some pretty creative solutions and while also asking some pretty obvious questions (“Where is your Patreon?” Uhhhh we don’t have one) and I want to thank you all for your tough love and advice. We had a good meeting. We agreed on a plan. Working it out now.

Until then THANK YOU again for all of your wonderful kindness and patient support. To quote Ozzy Osbourne, “God bless! I love you all!”

You Got Wood

Question of the Week

1) You Got Wood
**********
Wanna know the secret to the crew’s happiness with Pro Wrestling X? Why the hell people with 16 hr/day day jobs give whatever spare hours and minutes they have to a wrestling game project that has been in constant development for longer than some of our supporters have been alive?

EVERYONE is a fucking boss.

EVERYONE has creative decision making power.

EVERYONE shares a vision of something better

And NO ONE gives a FUCK if anyone has a problem with that

I’ll admit that I used to follow the conventional wisdom of how things “are supposed to work”. I bought into the “way things are done” and sheepishly acquiesced to the opinions of “authorities in their field”. Producers and designers were supposed to make all of the important design, branding, and business decisions and all of the “lowly artists and programmers” were expected to just do what they were told. I’m ashamed to admit I was so easily fooled by that bullshit back in the day.

Conventional wisdom is dead. Experts are worthless if they haven’t done EXACTLY what you are doing. There are no rules anymore and anyone who claims to KNOW what to do is delusional, lying, or both. Each one of us in this day and age has the 100% right to chart their own path. Make their own glorious mistakes. And decide for themselves how they are going to pursue their goals every day and define what success means for them.

To their credit, the other two PWX crew members have helped me to see the light in this respect. These guys are working their asses off during the day for some of the biggest game companies in the world and they STILL spend their free time, limited as it is, contributing to Pro Wrestling X. Why? Because with PWX they have a voice. They have control over their own shit. They decide what they will contribute. They don’t get handed a task list decided by some other asshole(s) and expected to just be good little worker ants.

Used to be that way. Embarrassed to admit it. Back in the day there were actually follow up meetings between some crew members after major crew meetings where the question would actually be, I shit you not, “That guy keeps contributing so many things we didn’t ask for that were not part of ‘the plan’. How do we get him to stop?”

Seriously. “How do we get him to stop?” Such bullshit. Might as well have shouted “YOU WILL RESPECT MY ATHORITAH!!” I should have known better. Now I do.

Case in point, our lead artist has recently been contributing some new rings while our programmer cranks on the next update with the preface, “Nobody asked for this, but…”

Those are my favorite! When people contribute what they WANT to contribute and not just what they are ORDERED to contribute...magic happens. Art happens. Cool wrestling games happen. Happiness, joy, and satisfaction happens. Makes me happy. The old way is dead and buried. This is the way ;)

SCHWING!

2) Pic of the Week
**************
This week’s pic goes with the first section of this newsletter. Duct tape and a “shitty” wrestling ring have never looked so sweet. Here is how our lead artist, Mr Wrestling 5, describes the new ring option:

“...there's also some wicked indy harcore mayhem we need to pay tribute to! A lot of Duct Tape was used to create this masterpiece.

Did anyone see the crazy match kenny omega and John Moxely had at Full Gear?

We have...
Wooden Posts
Cardboard RingMat
Chain Turnbuckles
Pillow Turnbuckles Pads and
Rope, Ropes! wut!! “

3) Quote of The Week

Newsletter #921

Welcome to Wrestling Gamers United Newsletter #921

1) Crew Meet Tonight
**********
YES! Crew meeting tonight! My favorite part of every week is when the three of us are blessed to sit down and bleed Pro Wrestling X for hours. For me, I’m like a little kid blurting out crazy ideas for Disneyland rides and having the actual smart engineering people tell me how exactly they can make dreams become real. I’m sure our lead programmer and artist are sitting on the other end of the line smirking and rolling their eyes at most of the shit I come up with but lately the insanity must be rubbing off because THEY’VE been the ones proposing the crazy shit! Not to spoil any of the plans, but after the last meeting I found myself having to research if Judy Bagwell was a real person, a map of Sturgis, and exactly how one would go about gluing shattered glass to one’s fist.

We’ve got probably 10-12 months of solid full time development mapped out. Now we just need the funds to put the guys to work full time. Chicken and egg...god dammit.

The agenda for tonight’s meeting covers a variety of topics from core development, business development, marketing ideas, new partnerships, to how we can best reward our hardcore suppoorters.

Partial list:

-The lighting in this week’s build needs optimizing
-New characters are looking good but we have requests for tweaks on one of them
-Database plans to make sure future rewards and DLC aren’t easily hacked.
-TONS of core movement adjustments; speed, etc.
-Time to start properly scaling the different heights of different wrestlers
-Do we want to add a strike combo system and if so, when in the roadmap does it make most sense.
-Selling naming/sponsorship rights to some moves and venues to raise development funding without it becoming gross and tacky.
-Scramble Cage? Cage of Death? Worth it?
-Animation priorities and just how much can Mr Wrestling 5 handle before he completely loses his mind being STILL the only artist for this entire f’n project!
-New championships and how to unlock them
-More content. More content. More content.

Can’t wait! Gonna be a FUN damn meeting! We’ve been slowly getting things in place to start streaming some crew meetings live on Discord so you can ALL enjoy the backstage drama and sausage making :)

2) Pic of the Week
**************
This week’s pic gets me right in the feels. When I first opened the Pro Wrestling X development studio in Vancouver I wanted to feel the collective energy of our supporters as soon as you walked through the front door. So I started printing out your letters of support and used them to wallpaper the entire entryway and staircase from the main floor to the second floor. Took me all day and it was worth it. Every morning I’d smile and walk up those stairs, running my hand along your letters and stopping to read one or two along the way.

Your letters from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Australia, EVERYWHERE just filled the place with the BEST fucking vibe. You could almost hear the walls shouting, “FUCK YEAH!” from all sides. It was like passing through a gauntlet of all your best friends cheering you on and making sure the whole crew knew without a doubt WHY we were doing this and for WHOM. I still have all of those letters. I’m sure I could wallpaper my entire house five times over by now. What you see in this picture just shows a tiny fraction of the walls your letters decorated for us.

So..thank you. I’ve never met you. But you continue to change my life and the lives of the crew for the better :)

4) Question of the Week
*******************
Does following the joy and exciting parts of the Pro Wrestling X story inspire you to chase your dreams and set big audacious goals? Or does hearing about all of the heartbreaking failures and embarrassing mistakes have the opposite effect instead and scare you away from taking risks and dreaming big?

In the meantime and in between time, that's it, another edition of
