Dev Chat #1 – Crafting a Norse Roguelite
Forged in Myth – Behind the World of Duriano
Welcome to the first entry in our Dev Chat series, where we take you behind the scenes of Duriano — our fast-paced, top-down roguelite with a mythological twist. In this installment, we're talking about the vision, challenges, and design choices behind building a roguelite game inspired by Norse mythology — and shaped around a very unexpected hero.
Why Norse Mythology?
We’ve always loved mythologies where gods aren't perfect — they're flawed, fierce, and far from untouchable. Norse mythology is rich with chaos, prophecy, betrayal, and rebirth — all themes that align naturally with roguelite design.
In Duriano, we didn’t want to simply borrow Norse gods as cameos. We wanted to build a world after the Divine Collapse — a catastrophic mythic event where realms shattered, gods fell, and only fragments of their power remain.
Now, in the ruins of that collapse, even something as strange as a cursed durian fruit can rise to challenge fate and reclaim divine power.
The gods you fight, the powers you inherit, the blessings you choose — everything is grounded in Norse symbols, trails, and fates. But it's filtered through our own chaotic, sometimes humorous, vision of what comes after the end of an age.
A Roguelite at its Core
At the heart of Duriano is replayability. No run is the same. Between chamber types, enemy patterns, divine blessings, and build paths, our goal was to create something that feels fresh every time you play — but never random just for the sake of it.
Each system in the game reinforces this philosophy:
- God’s Trails act as skill paths that define your build with powerful “Resonance” abilities
- Fate’s Flavors are the core modifiers that stack and evolve your combat style
- Augments and Blessings offer micro-decisions with macro effects on your strategy
We wanted progression to matter — not just between runs, but during each run. You don’t just get stronger, you get smarter. You learn to adapt, pick your paths, and survive divine punishment one decision at a time.
The Tone: Dark, But Playful
Yes, you're battling gods. Yes, you're unlocking cursed weapons. Yes, there’s a mysterious Eternal Keeper pulling strings. But you’re still playing as a fruit.
We knew Duriano would work best if it balanced grim Norse lore with absurdity and charm. That balance has become a core part of the game’s identity:
- A dark, intense world where damage numbers pop with style
- Mythic creatures reimagined with a twist
- Combat that’s deadly serious
This tone helps us lean into what makes roguelites memorable — not just their systems, but their moments.

What’s Next
As we continue developing Duriano, we’re doubling down on what players are loving most:
- More God’s Trails and unique resonance effects
- New heroes with drastically different stat builds
- Additional chamber types to challenge your decision-making
- Quality-of-life improvements and progression systems that reward mastery
Early Access is just the beginning — and your feedback is a vital part of what’s coming next.
