Undying Flower is Celebrating Indonesian Game Day (HARGAI)!

August 8th is HARGAI (Hari Game Indonesia), which means Indonesian Game Day! 🎉

Indonesia has created amazing games throughout the years, and we are proud to be part of that journey. As we crafted our game, it was only natural to draw inspiration from the world close to us. Through thoughtful style and symbolism in our art, we hope Undying Flower can also help introduce Indonesian culture to the world.

We would also like to give a shoutout to all the local game developers out there making awesome games. You can definitely check them out here!

Dev Insights: Nala

Nala is the main protagonist of this story. When we created her, we wanted her to represent someone shaped by a heavy past, a series of seemingly simple events that gradually built into something complex enough to leave gaps in her memory, filling her with regret that suppressed her personality and emotions, fracturing her identity.
Characterization
Her story revolves around her biggest regret and the heavy burden of living with the thought that she killed her own grandfather in the past. She can’t recall the details of what happened, but she remembers clearly holding her grandfather’s cold body in her little arms.

Nala was an intellectual and creative girl. Now working as a scientist under her foster father, she has detached herself from that creative side because of her trauma. She subconsciously suppresses her emotions. Most of the time she remains calm, passive, and "normal." As a grown-up, she only does what needs to be done, making sure none of her past self ever surfaces.

Nala’s family has all left her in one way or another. The only person she holds very dear now is her foster father, Toga, who took her in after she lost her grandfather. Since then, she has been a kind and obedient daughter to him, working together as a scientist.

Nala is a kind and caring woman. She's also a very hardworking person, very dedicated to her work, sometimes to a fault, prioritizing what her foster father wants before anything.
Visual Concept
Nala’s design reflects her simple & straightforward nature and hardworking personality. The green tint in her hair is a trace of her past.

Dev Insights: Dark World

The Dark World serves as a blank space, acting almost like a gate or a bridge that must be passed through before The Flower guides the way into The Memory World, but only if she allows it.

It is also the space where conversations with The Statue of Memories take place. The simulation of a new memory occurs there as well, before returning to The Memory World to observe the outcome.
Visual Concept
The surface of the ground is a liquid, with crystal shards underneath that come from The Flower’s body. It's proof of how many times The Flower has tried and failed to simulate new changes to Nala's Memory.

White cords stretch down from the sky gripping the statue tightly, representing the pain of being bound by dark memories. They pinch and pull, as if trying to hold back any movement toward change.

Dev Insights: The Flower

The Flower is a mysterious being that owns the Memory World. The center of every visualization in Undying Flower. She has the ability to travel between memories of people.
Visual Concept
We wanted her character to be mysterious, haunting yet beautiful, intensely emotional at times yet stoic at others. Every bit of her visualization showed that she is bound by something, but also symbolizes a ruler of a lonely world.

As The Flower moves around in Memory World, players might notice a red, orb-like light glowing from within her heart. It highlights the human side of The Flower, suggesting that her emotions are still there, a different perspective where her soul looks detached previously in real world.

Her white transparent robe represents her innocent side as a little girl, covering her black body due to her being part of an abstraction of memory.

She wears a mask to cover her real face, yet she can express emotions through it. Her crown represents her rule over her own world, and yet, her neck and feet are bound by black thorny vines. The Flower appears all-powerful in her world, but desperate to be free. This visualization is inspired by Christ's crown of thorns.
More Than a Subject
The Flower represents the deepest, most suppressed part of the experimental subject as a young little girl. It is why she has no voice, but she uses something similar to a sign language to express words that only the people that she "invited" to her world can understand.

She has traveled through the memories of many people, and is now trapped in Nala's darkest memory. Her purpose remains a mystery, but her current mission is to change the outcome of Nala's regret to free her own soul and continue her journey.

She has tried to get out, desperately tried to change the outcome several times on her own, but turns out she couldn't do it on her own. So she "brought" Nala's soul with her to help.
