KOTOR Remake was almost a remastered collection by Baldur's Gate EE devs

The E3-like PlayStation Showcase earlier this month brought with it the long-awaited announcement of a full remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - one of the best RPGs of all time. Now it seems like we almost got a KOTOR remastered collection of both games in the series instead, from the ex-BioWare staff at Beamdog.

As Sony's showcase stream revealed, the KOTOR Remake is on its way from Aspyr Media - and it's definitely coming to PC, by the way - but fans almost got something very different instead. One interesting part about the Remake is that original developer BioWare doesn't appear to be involved at all - so it's surprising to learn that one of BioWare's founders actually pitched another way of bringing back KOTOR.

According to Beamdog CEO - and BioWare co-founder - Trent Oster, his studio actually pitched a remaster called the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Reforged Collection, which seemingly would including both KOTOR games. Given Beamdog is responsible for the remasters of RPGs such as Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Planescape: Torment, it would seem a natural fit.

KOTOR Remake doesn't seem to be involving EA or original devs BioWare

A full remake of BioWare's all-time classic Star Wars RPG Knights of the Old Republic was announced at the PlayStation Showcase this week, but now it seems like both BioWare and parent company - and current Star Wars rights holders in gaming - EA seemingly have nothing to do it.

When Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake was announced on Thursday - and was confirmed later that it is definitely coming to PC - fans noticed that the only companies mentioned in the trailer were Aspyr Media, Lucasfilm Games, and PlayStation/Sony Interactive Entertainment. Completely excluded from the trailer and even the press release was any mention of KOTOR's original developer BioWare or EA.

Other than the fact that BioWare created the original Knights of the Old Republic - and that BioWare/EA is still supporting MMO sequel The Old Republic - neither BioWare nor EA seem involved in the remake in any way. BioWare stated its support for the project on Twitter, while giving detached phrases like how it "will watch with great interest" and calling it "Aspyr's Remake".

The KOTOR remake is coming to PC, too

The long-rumoured remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was officially announced as part of today's PlayStation Showcase event, and naturally, that trailer only made mention of a PlayStation 5 version. However, a follow-up blog post from the developers confirms that KOTOR is only a PlayStation exclusive in console terms - and only a timed exclusive at that.

This requires a bit of unpacking marketing terminology, but the official blog post says the KOTOR remake is "a console exclusive on PlayStation 5 at launch". Which means you should expect a wait before it lands on Xbox - but as Lucasfilm Games confirms on Twitter, it's coming to PC, too.

This is, indeed, a full remake. As the devs at Aspyr explain in the blog, "our hope is to give both series newcomers and long-term fans an experience that can live alongside the very best modern releases. We're rebuilding it from the ground up with the latest tech to match the groundbreaking standard of innovation established by the original, all while staying true to its revered story."

I don't want Knights of the Old Republic 3, I want Star Wars: The Old Republic 2

I can't believe I've been playing Star Wars: The Old Republic for a decade. I would have scoffed at the idea at launch, when it felt like a decent BioWare RPG strapped to a crap MMO—more awkward than Luke snogging Leia. It's had a real glow-up since then, however, and there are exciting things on the horizon: a complete separation between class stories and advanced classes, allowing you to, say, play through the Bounty Hunter storyline as an Agent. Another excuse to roll yet another alt...
