Knights of the Old Republic Unreal series gets its cast and release date

There's a fan-made Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic animated series coming made in Unreal Engine 5, and as we previously reported, it's actually got the blessing of Lucasfilm so it won't be shut down. Now the team at Unreal Cinema has revealed the full voice cast for the project, as well as a release date for mid-October.

The KOTOR Unreal series will launch as a range of 15-20 minute episodes over three seasons, with each season having its "own story arc and satisfying ending". Season one will consist of ten episodes this size. Originally the series was supposed to start in late Summer, but that's going to be pushed back. Knights of the Old Republic Episode 1 now has a release date of mid-October.

Revealed by Unreal Cinema in the same video is the main voice cast for the project. While most of the actors only provided their first names, Daniel Hodge will be voicing Darth Malak and Canderous Ordo and has been part of fan projects before - he recently voiced a few characters in the massive Fallout: New Vegas mod The Frontier.

Fans are making a Knights of the Old Republic Unreal series with Lucasfilm's blessing

A talented team of fans are retelling the story of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as an animated miniseries using Unreal Engine 5. Despite the fact that the best Star Wars game ever is reportedly getting a remake, the team reached out to Lucasfilm for permission and apparently received its blessing to proceed.

The team at Unreal Cinema has been posting videos on its progress over the last few months, and have been making excellent strides - the space battles in particular look suitably epic, as does the Swoop Racing across Tatooine. The most recent video, posted on Friday, shows bits and pieces of the opening battle and the new facial animation on KOTOR's first character Trask.

The project has already shared some looks at major characters from the series too. There's a new look at Jedi hero Bastila Shan, a cool look at Darth Revan - who we've heard may be important in some way - and, of course, everyone's favourite meatbag hater HK-47.

So, how about those Knights Of The Old Republic remake rumours?

Once again, lips are flapping with rumours of a Knights Of The Old Republic remake. No one has officially announced they're redoing the BioWare RPG set years before Star Trek, but rumours have gone round for a few years, often with Aspyr Media attached as the developers. Well, those same rumours have come back round again. KOTOR is one of the few BioWare games I haven't played (DS9 was more my bag), so I have to ask: would you still recommend it to me today? Or tell me if you're clamouring for a KOTOR 3 instead?

The best Star Wars game is reportedly getting a remake

There are a lot of contenders for the crown when it comes to the best Star Wars games, like Empire at War, Stellaris, and Civilization 6. But with apologies to Joe's now-venerable gag about the best interactive adventures in the galaxy far, far away, the actual best Star Wars game is Knights of the Old Republic, and rumours of a remake have just gotten a lot more solid.

These rumours go back a few months. In a ResetEra thread speculating on a potential KOTOR remake, game industry insider Jason Schreier suggested that "nobody is going to guess" the developer of such a project correctly. And as VGC reported in January, Star Wars insider Bespin Bulletin backed up the idea that a Knights of the Old Republic project is in development.

Asked about the KOTOR in a MinnMax interview this week, Schreier confirms that "there is something there. It's real." Later in the interview, Schreier also says that Aspyr is the studio behind this remake. Aspyr has predominantly been known as a port house, and has handled Mac and mobile versions of KOTOR in the past, as well as more recent console versions of classic Star Wars titles including Episode I - Racer, Jedi Academy, and Republic Commando.
