Rivers of Astrum: Daughter of Darkness News

Version 0.3.4 Status!

[p]Greetings everyone!

So, I am finally on the other side of my grief, and I am back to work in full. The typical speed at which I work, is 10 renders per day. This is primarily because the setting and rendering of those 10 renders usually encompasses a 24 hour window.

There are fluctuations of course, depending on what - specifically - is in the shots. But roughly 70 renders per week is a good average. There is no change there, and things are proceeding as normal.

I do my best to be as transparent as I can be about the process, and how the events in my life are affecting it. The loss of Biscuit was very public, and obviously slowed things down a lot. However, as I mentioned, I'm on the other end of that, and nothing notable is holding me back as we continue full steam ahead.

As of tonight, the entirety of the update is written and coded. That said, (and as i typically say): The art is the bottleneck. I can only move as fast as it does. But as of now, we've hit the 50% mark in raw render count. I expect the remainder of the update will actually move a lot faster than the first half did. I'm not dealing with the grief anymore, and the scene ahead will not be as hard on the renderer as this scene has been.

Some of you may have seen me talk about it, but I am attempting my most ambitious animation to date in this coming update. And a friend brought up an interesting point today. That so many games would just release placeholder renders, and come back and do animations later. That is something I'm not personally a fan of. It might take longer, but I want each update to be released in it's final form, not as a placeholder to be reworked later. That would essentially make every update a sort of beta, and not only do I dislike that in terms of quality, I don't think it serves the vision of the game, and I don't think it's fair to everyone who purchased it. It'll be a little while yet before I'm able to really have a good estimate for a time frame on the update, but it is coming along nicely! (particular now that I'm back to work at my normal pace!)

I wanted to thank everyone for their patience, while i dealt with the grief. I believe the wait will be worth it ;)

Things to look forward to in the upcoming update!

[/p][p]Steam Achievements - I believe I have isolated what caused them to not activate for the players, even though they tested ok on my end. I will have that fix implemented for this update, but if there is a way to clear achievements, for the purposes of retesting, then I don't know it.

I won't let Achievements become a nagging issue that spans updates for the next year. If it doesn't function when this update goes live, then i will shift all focus towards them, until they DO function. This way I can get that hurdle behind me. [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Spicy Time with Selene! - Selene will get her first nsfw scene in this update. There will be both lesbian and hetero paths for this. If you have hetero content disabled, then it will default to the lesbian path. If you have it enabled, then you will be presented with the choice for which path to travel.[/p][p][/p][p]A new cast member! - When Rivers of Astrum (the entire saga) is complete, it will have 12 main characters (including Dee). Daughter of Darkness, however, will see a total of 8. The last of which will be added in this coming update, as she makes her way into the story. I can't wait for you to meet her![/p][p][/p][p]And with all that out of the way. What are you all looking forward to in the upcoming updates? Any hopes for the ladies? or the story? Any content type in particular that you're waiting for? I'd love to get your thoughts!

Best wishes!

On moving forward!

[p]Hey guys![/p][p][/p][p]If any of you have been paying attention to the discord announcements, you'll see ive had a few ups and downs lately. I am trying to get a handle on that, but grief is grief, what can i say. Though I really DO feel like I'm through the worst of it now, finally.[/p][p][/p][p]But enough of the downer stuff. I wanted to take a moment to talk about something. Primarily, I want to reaffirm my commitment to developing and completing the game. I took a hit when I lost Biscuit, but I'm standing back up now, and he wouldn't want me to let this project die :) [/p][p][/p][p]To that end, we're working on completing the next big scene, with Sandra and Vex. Discord users will have seen a few shots from that upcoming update by now. A lot happens in there, but I will spare you all the spoilers. I'm really excited for everyone to start getting some real glimpses of where the primary plot arch is going :)[/p][p][/p][p]Other than that... Happy New Year to everyone! I'm really excited to be back to work on the game in full, and can't wait to show you what this year will bring for Rivers of Astrum!

Version 0.3.2b (Bugfix) is now Live!

[p]Greetings everyone!

Version 0.3.2b just went live! It's a small bugfix patch. Here be the notes! :)
[/p]
  • [p]Corrected a definition bug, that could cause a "Sayer not found" hard crash, when viewing scenes from the Replay Gallery.[/p]
  • [p]Added several minor translation lines that were missed in the original localization to Simplified Chinese.[/p]
  • [p]STEAM ACHIEVEMENTS: Appear to be non-functional for the majority of players. They tested fine before the upload, but something is blocking them. I am working to find the cause and correct it. Please bare with me :).[/p]

Version 0.3.2 is now LIVE!

[p]Hey everyone!

It's been a hell of a dev cycle. A lot's happened. Many of you were around for it, so I won't go back into detail on that, but Rivers of Astrum: Daughter of Darkness, version 0.3.2 is now live on Steam!

Before we get started ... BIG DEAL ... There's an almost certainty that prior saves will not work in this version, due to the retcon changes made to the code, to incorporate the Simplified Chinese translation. I try as much as I can to avoid save game compatibility issues, but I'm simply beginning to believe (due to the nature of their CAUSE), that - with my direction for the game - it may simply be something that has to be suffered through from time to time (for both you guys and me) until the game achieves its 1.0 release.

I wanted to make that much known upfront at least. I certainly don't do it on purpose, but there are a thousand instances i can think of in which it - unfortunately - becomes unavoidable. Most especially when adding new code to old content (such as integrating a new translation).

With that dark cloud out of the way though, on to the update info!

This version includes a lot of exciting new stuff!

If you start a new game with the update, you will get all of the updated info on specifics for the game's systems, for those of you who choose to read through that :)
[/p][p]Replay Galleries!
[/p][p](this image was taken during development, before the list was finalized, and doesn't reflect the current scene order displayed in-game)[/p][p][/p][p]Several scenes are now available for replaying at your discretion, once unlocked. More scenes will - of course - get added to it later in development, as those scenes occur in the game.[/p][p]
Notes on that: [/p][p][/p]
  1. [p]The Replay Gallery WILL NOT respect your filter preferences. Meaning that if you don't have heterosexual content toggled on, but have (somehow) unlocked a hetero scene, you will be able to view it from the Gallery, even with hetero content toggled off. This is a function of the replay mechanic in Ren'py. If there exists a way around it, I'm not aware of it. (If anyone knows of a way, I'm all ears! :D)[/p]
  2. [p]I got every major scene. But if anyone notices a segment that they think belongs in the Replay Gallery, but isn't there, feel free to ping me, so we can discuss it :)[/p]
[p]
New Cast Members!

[/p][p]Specifically, one miss Kiara Weatherly. She's a quirky ball of energy! She's a lot of fun, if i do say so myself![/p][p]
Chinese Localization!
[/p][p]Rivers of Astrum: Daughter of Darkness now comes with translations for Simplified Chinese!

(Traditional Chinese is in the works, but no timetable on that yet. I will try to get included as quickly as I can. All other major languages are still on the table, but it will take time to get to them all)

Steam Achievements! [/p][p][/p][p]They're here now! There are only a handful at the moment, and I don't plan on having more than around 30 at most, by the game's end. More will be added as the game progresses through development :) [/p][p][/p][p]It's worth noting that I'm the first person in the world to get all achievements in the game XD [/p][p][/p][p]A lot of systems got added that will streamline additions in the future, for things like the achievements and replay galleries. Now that the framework is in place, it won't take any time at all to add to them in the future. This update continues the story, and hints at where it's going in the future! I can't wait for you guys to continue Kim and crew's journey! [/p][p][/p][p]Best wishes! [/p][p][/p][p]~Paper Tiger [/p]

Public Release Date Set!

[p]Hey guys!

We're almost there. If anyone has noticed within the last few hours, Steam Achievements for the game have been popping up. There will only be a handful for now, and none of them will be achievable until the public release of version 0.3.2, but they were the last step.

THE PUBLIC STEAM RELEASE OF VERSION 0.3.2 IS SCHEDULED FOR 14, NOVEMBER, 2025.

What Version 0.3.2 will Bring (The Changelog):[/p][p][/p]
  • [p]Added 9 animations, 501 renders, and approximately 3,600 words. Continuing the story.[/p]
  • [p]Due to feedback, the font size was slightly increased, to account for the smaller natural size of the game's font.[/p]
  • [p]Nonconsensual Content Returned for all future Steam releases, unless told otherwise by Steam.[/p]
  • [p]Galleries facelifted, and new Character Screens added. Welcome our new heroes to the team![/p]
  • [p]Steam Achievements added! There are only a handful for now, they will be integrated as the story continues!.[/p]
  • [p]Game now autosaves at the end of current update content, to avoid save file conflicts moving forward.[/p]
  • [p]Official Credits Roll! I know, no one really watches credits. But if you happen to be someone who does, I'd love feedback![/p]
  • [p]All characters' names now have a small outline, to help them remain visible during certain scenes.[/p]
[p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Known Issues(1):
[/p][p]
There is a version of Cara's scene where there are 3-4 lines that are not voiced. This was an oversight on my part, they were simply missed when I delivered the script to Claire, and a scheduling conflict prevented us from getting them voiced in time for the release.[/p][p][/p][p]
[/p][p]Planned Items:[/p][p][/p][p]The big planned item for now is Chinese translation. I've entered into a contract with a translator, and work on that has begun. If it's ready in time to meet the public release date (and I can get it coded in without too many snags) then it will go live in 0.3.2. If not, then it will be included in the following release!

Other languages are in the plan, but I'm one guy. I gotta bring it in as I can afford to do so :)[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Update news aside (and this is the last time I'll be bringing it up), I want to thank everyone for sticking with me. This dev cycle brought me a lot of heartache. I lost my dog, Cadie. Collective Shout tried to attack our livelihoods, and succeeded in a few cases. In the middle of that, I lost my cat, and best friend, Biscuit. So ... I was down for a while, and working much slower than usual for a longer while still. I'm still recovering from Biscuit's loss. It still doesn't feel real yet. But the grief has largely passed, and i will be getting back to work at a normal pace now! :)

I can't wait for you guys to continue the story! Some heavy plot drops in this one! ːsteamhappyː
