Looks like Rainbow Six Siege gets a Rainbow Six Extraction event in August

The Rainbow Six Extraction release date has been pushed back to early next year, but it looks like we won't have to wait that long to get a taste of the alien invasion. Ubisoft is teasing a new Rainbow Six Siege event for August that looks to be connected to the upcoming game - and a load of leaks have already provided details on what form that event will take.

The official Rainbow Six Siege Twitter account has posted a "routine safety announcement" from the Abidjan Metro System, warning that the "consulate station and surrounding areas are currently closed to commuters due to a gas leak". A new header image for the account includes an Extraction-style growth and a date of August 3.

No prizes for guessing that Consulate is getting an Extraction-themed takeover based on all that, and exactly such an event has already leaked - as most big Siege updates tend to do. Footage of a special mode set in Consulate with all of Extraction's alien goop recently surfaced courtesy of Zer0Bytes, alongside an indication that the event would last through August 24.

Ubisoft confirms that Rainbow Six Siege 2 is probably never happening

It shouldn't be surprising that Rainbow Six Siege 2 isn't in the cards, given Ubisoft's broad push toward fewer standalone releases and more long-term services, and the direction the game has pursued since its launch in 2015. But as part of an online Q&A with fans today, the devs behind the game have broken down the exact reasons why Rainbow Six Siege is not getting a sequel any time soon.

"Siege is an evolving game," creative director Leroy Athanassoff says. "The Siege of the future will be dramatically different from today's Siege, to the point where we could call it Siege 2. However, as a team, we strongly believe we can bring about these changes in an incremental way, within the current Siege framework."

Athanassoff continues: "Siege 2 would mean a new game, a new environment, probably a new inventory and maybe a new dev team. We do not feel that this is what is needed for the community. We care about your investment in the game, we do not want to move to a new one."

There is still "no plan" to make Rainbow Six Siege a free-to-play game

It's nearly been six years since Rainbow Six Siege launched, and despite still drawing in record numbers of players but it continues to face stiff opposition from the likes of Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Call of Duty: Warzone - all fantastic free-to-play games. However, don't expect Siege to go F2P anytime soon, as Ubisoft confirmed to us that it is still "no plan" to do so.

Rainbow Six Siege continues to offer excellent free weekends and the like, but a few people may be hesitant to get into Siege due to the up-front cost. The game's director Leroy Athanassoff previously stated over a year ago that, regarding Siege going F2P, "on the development team we want that at some point" and that they "want the game to be accessible to everyone" - although they did admit there would be challenges involved.

We caught up with associate game director Aurélien Chiron regarding the state of Rainbow Six Siege right now and their plans for the future, and of course, we had to ask for an update about the possibility of it going free-to-play - and it still seems unlikely.
