Dead by Daylight's creative director on bringing Ringu's Sadako and Yoichi to life

Dead by Daylight has been around for a while now, but Behaviour Interactive seems to have struck gold with its novel concept. It's the horror equivalent of a multiplayer arena shooter, except one of you is a nightmarish killer, while four others take on the role of survivors who have to work together to outwit the killer and escape unscathed.

According to Steam Charts, the game still sees between 40-50,000 players each month, with peaks of double that number. And it's no wonder, because Behaviour has been consistently feeding more and more content into the game, collaborating with horror's biggest hitters, like Hellraiser, Resident Evil, and Saw.

Ahead of Dead by Daylight's latest update, which introduces The Ring's Sadako and Yoichi as new characters, we spoke to Behaviour Interactive's creative director David Richard to find out more about how the team went about bringing these horror icons to life in-game, the new jump scares and Easter eggs, and what's in store for the game's future.

Dead by Daylight has no plans for a sequel

Dead by Daylight's next update is on the way, adding Sadako from Ringu - which Western audiences will know as The Ring - as the new killer. There are now over 30 DLCs available for Behaviour Interactive's asymmetrical horror game - at least doubling the content that was available at launch. So, is it time for a sequel? In an interview with The Loadout, Dead by Daylight's creative director Dave Richard confirms that there are no plans for a new Dead by Daylight game.

Dead by Daylight has been around for six years now and we asked Richard how long the original game will continue to be updated and whether there were any plans for the studio to release a full-on Dead by Daylight 2.

"Dead by Daylight as a project and as a team has been built to be supported for as long as we could," Richard says. "If there are players supporting it and a growing community, it makes sense to us to continue to update and support the title rather than move to a sequel. As we have seen through the years with the massive visual rework of maps and characters, with effort and know-how it is possible to update a title even in major ways to support it even longer."

How Dead by Daylight re-envisioned The Ring's Yoichi as an adult

Dead by Daylight's Sadako update inserts the Japanese horror icon from The Ring into the game as a new killer. But alongside her as a new survivor comes Yoichi Asakawa, the only person to survive Sadako's onslaught in the original films and novel. Yoichi was just a child in those works, but now he's all aged up for Dead by Daylight. Speaking to The Loadout, Behaviour Interactive's creative director David Richard discusses how the studio went about the transformation.

"First of all, I have to say how happy we were that Kadokawa allowed us to go on with this idea and create new lore that doesn't exist for this character," Richard says when asked about how he worked with the Ringu licence-holders, Kadokawa, to bring Yoichi to Dead by Daylight. "As with all licensed content, everything we do follows specific guidelines, and is approved by our partner. At the end of the day, our objective is that the content we create is truthful to their original IP, and represents their universe, in a Dead by Daylight way."

But how did Richard and the team go about creating the adult version of Yoichi when there wasn't a precedent for the character being any older than a child? "We wanted to ensure he was going to go into a science field just like his father," Richard explains. "Since he knows that Sadako might be living in water in the open sea on the coast, we thought that that's what oriented him towards studies related to the ocean."

It looks like a Dead By Daylight dating sim is in the works

It's already one of the best horror games on PC, but now it looks like Dead By Daylight could be getting its hooks into another genre too: the dating sim. According to a new trademark, developer Behaviour Interactive is working on a love sim spin-off called Hooked On You. Yes, really.

Apart from being one of the best multiplayer games around, Dead By Daylight is almost as well known as Fortnite for its great crossovers - such as Resident Evil or, more recently, Sadako from The Ring. However, we're not sure anyone expected Dead By Daylight to crossover into another genre entirely. Certainly not a dating sim, anyway, and not after Valentine's Day.

As spotted by TechRaptor, Behaviour has recently filed a trademark for a game with the non-ambiguous title of Hooked On You: A Dead By Daylight Dating Sim. To see for yourself, head here and search for the title under "Basic Word Mark Search (New User)". It was filed on February 16, 2022, and seems to be for an actual game.

Dead By Daylight's Sadako is proving too scary for some players

The just-announced Dead By Daylight x The Ring crossover DLC, Sadako Rising, isn't out until March 8 but players with early access are finding out the bad side of tying one of the best horror games to one of the most terrifying horror franchises ever - as one particular jumpscare is catching a lot of people by surprise.

It was revealed this week that the next big horror movie collaboration coming to multiplayer game Dead By Daylight is The Ring/Ringu, which will introduce new survivor Yoichi Asakawa as well as the film's iconic long-haired ghost girl Sadako to the game.

The Sadako Rising DLC will officially release on March 8 but a number of streamers have already been granted access to it - and they're finding Sadako a little too horrifying, especially in regards to one jumpscare that isn't even in the game itself (thanks, Eurogamer). When selecting a Killer in the lobby, the character will usually stand patiently on the side while the player picks their Perks. Sadako, however, will instead choose a random moment to jumpscare the player.
