The Skull of Koak: Legend or Fiction?

Although the humans only lingered briefly in Nispad, one expedition nevertheless encountered Koak. The ancient beast descended upon the detachment that had ventured too far. The soldiers, surrounded by treacherous swamps, stood no chance.
However, at the cost of incredible losses, one warrior managed to plunge his spear into the armored scales, and the mage accompanying the detachment cast a spell that incinerated the beast. Despite their success, only two of the entire expedition survived—the mage and the wounded soldier.
The Skull of Koak was brought to court and presented to the king as proof of their heroic deed. It now rests in the treasury of Erikuria. But the people whisper: was the expedition ever carried out? They say the mage and his accomplice slaughtered the detachment themselves, and the skull is merely a skillful forgery made of swamp wood and bone.
This theory is further supported by the fact that the surviving soldier and others indirectly involved in the story soon died under mysterious circumstances. The truth remains shrouded in mystery, and perhaps only a future king, captivated by unraveling long-held mysteries, will shed light on the bloody events of that fateful campaign.
