In Development: RDF/LT Ares

Commanders!

On Monday, we revealed the first article of the upcoming Rough Riders Battle Path and now we’re ready to show you the second one. Please welcome the RDF/LT Ares Light Tank prototype!

But, as usual, a little history first.

Since the days of the Vietnam War until the mid-1990s, the standard American light tank was the M551 Sheridan. As light tanks go, it was mediocre at best and with its problematic Vietnam record, it’s no wonder that the U.S. Army started to look for replacement.

The RDF/LT (Rapid Deployment Force Light Tank) was one of such designs by AAI Corporation. It originated in an earlier Light Tank program that went nowhere (as usual), but the lessons learned allowed AAI to develop this tank in hope of further participation in the U.S. Marine AVCT program. The Marines needed something fast with a lot of firepower but at the same time light enough to be transported using a sling under a CH-53 helicopter. The original prototype AAI produced was armed with a 75mm Ares cannon but realizing its experimental nature, AAI opted to replace it with an older, well-tested 76mm M32 rifled gun that had been previously used on the M41 Walker Bulldog Light Tank. Despite this, the result was quite an advanced and fast vehicle with its hull made of aluminum and even the gun received new APFSDS shells.

Regardless, despite these qualities, the Marines didn’t want it and that was the end of the RDF/LT. The end of the 1970s wasn’t really a good time for experimental projects with the funding being cut left and right as an aftermath of the lost Vietnam War. And so the Marines went for the LAV and HMMWV wheeled vehicles instead, leaving the RDF/LT in prototype stage only. The project was officially terminated in 1985.

This RDF version is equipped with an unmanned turret (reducing the crew to two men) and Stinger missile pods to provide the vehicle with anti-air capabilities. This configuration appeared in a full-scale mock-up version.

In Armored Warfare, the RDF/LT Ares will become a Tier 8 Premium Light Tank and the second prize of the Rough Riders Battle Path.

Performance-wise, we’re looking at something similar to the previously unveiled ELKE – an extremely mobile light tank with poor protection, armed with 75mm rapid-firing cannon with more advanced shells than used on the ELKE and a larger magazine – up to 18 shells.

However, there will be some notable differences. For one, the turret is unmanned, which means the vehicle won’t be as vulnerable as the ELKE.

As you can also see from the images, the vehicle is armed with ATGM launchers. In real-life, they fire Stinger SAMs. Our version fires Starstreaks, which are theoretically compatible with the launcher platform. The Stingers are also implemented – as potent thermobaric warhead missiles.

And, last but not least, the vehicle has an even more powerful engine and will therefore be even more suitable for the fast and hard-hitting gameplay Light Tanks are intended for. Overall, this tank will offer more tactical options than the ELKE because its missiles clearly are a long distance weapon system.

However, the core will remain the same – to be perhaps the ultimate Light Tank of its Tier.

We hope that you’ll enjoy this vehicle and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

Historical Skins: AbramsX Reaver

Commanders!

It wouldn’t be a U.S. Independence Day celebration without new American content and this year’s no exception. However, you might now be thinking, why take a look at it right now when we’re three days into June? Well, there’s a good reason for that, which we’ll explain below. Right now, we’re happy to introduce the newest skin that we will have for you – the Reaver for AbramsX.

Considering the vehicle choice, the skin is not exactly historical in the truest sense of the word. Rather, it is inspired by real vehicles and revolves around a specific theme:

“What would happen if the AbramsX prototype was adopted in U.S. service?”

This particular AbramsX, named “Reaver” by its crew, clearly served in some middle-eastern country.

It’s been painted with the same sand color as other American MBTs but the surface is scratched and worn by heavy use. The crew’s belongings are lying on the back of the turret.

We’ve paid extra attention to detail to make the skin look as realistic as possible and we hope you’ll enjoy it. But that’s not all we’ll have for you.

For the lovers of realism we have a new camouflage from the Reforger 83 family. The Reforger 83 exercise saw many U.S. tanks covered with unconventional camouflages, some of which we already introduced to the game. Like the others, this camouflage was seen on an Abrams MBT belonging to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

And, last not but least, we’ll have some real-life inscriptions that were spotted on various Abrams MBTs across the years. We picked a few cool ones that we thought you’d like.

But the best part? You can get all that by simply playing the game. A new special event called “Operation Liberty” is starting on June 11 and if you play the game every day, you’ll receive the skin on July 4 (and by that time, you’ll have everything else as well). We’ll tell you more about the event’s prizes in the next article.

So saddle up, commanders, because with the new Battle Path coming as well, this summer’s going to be hot. We hope you’ll enjoy this content and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

In Development: ELKE

Commanders!

With the current Battle Path in its second half, we’d like to show you what comes after you are finished with the history of mercenaries. The next Battle Path will be called Rough Riders and will focus on the history of U.S. cavalry, from its humble beginnings during the Revolutionary War to its transformation into the armored cavalry it is today. And the first vehicle of the Battle Path will be none other than the ELKE technology demonstrator.

The ELKE is a part of the late 1970s and early 1980s search for a Sheridan replacement, which started with the HSTV-L and included the RDF and DFSV prototypes.

The word ELKE stands for Elevated Kinetic Energy. Following the dismissal of the early replacements to the Sheridan (the HSTV-L program), Pacific Car and Foundry was tasked in 1982 to produce a single prototype of their proposed elevated gun design using a Sheridan hull.

The 75mm XM274 Ares gun would depress and elevate on a hydraulic-controlled arm, producing amazing elevation and depression angles. The Ares gun was a prototype of hypervelocity medium caliber cannon featuring penetration values similar to main caliber tank guns – at a fraction of their weight. Additionally, it was envisaged to have a very high rate of fire. The gun would be magazine-fed and the whole prototype weighed mere 15 tons.

Unfortunately, while impressive, the arm design was deemed much too unreliable. Another major issue of these designs was the limited amount of ammunition carried (far below the military requirements). As such, the prototype did not go anywhere but paved the way for the RDF Light Tank.

  • In Armored Warfare, the ELKE will become a Tier 7 Premium Light Tank and the first prize of the Rough Riders Battle Path.

For its Tier, the ELKE will be the ultimate Light Tank with unparalleled mobility and firepower. The downside? Nearly complete lack of armor, although most of the elevated weapons station does count as a weapons module rather than a turret.

But this tank won’t be about armor. It will be the embodiment of speed and precision as, for its mere 15 tons, it’ll use a 300hp engine (with 400hp being available through additional progression). The gun will feature a unique animation based on our analysis of the ELKE drawings and the few photographs that are available, allowing for extreme depression and elevation angles (-40/+25 degrees).

The 75mm gun caliber lower damage will be compensated by extremely high rate of fire in two modes:

  • Rapid burst mode (6 round magazine) with a longer reload (upgradable to 12 rounds)
  • Regular fire mode (60 rounds per minute) (potentially upgradable to automatic, autocannon-like fire)

And what’s the right tactic for what is essentially an armored and armed race car? Go in with the gun blazing, of course! For those who love unrivalled firepower and speed, this will be one of the most purist vehicles in the game.

On the other hand, its high-positioned cannon along with its gun depression will allow for some creative use of terrain when planning ambushes. Either way, the ELKE will devastate softer targets in seconds – you don’t want to find yourselves on the wrong side of that gun.

We hope that you’ll enjoy the ELKE as well as the entire Battle Path and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!
