In Development: BMT-72-140

[p]Commanders!

Today we’d like to tell you more about a vehicle that’s coming this summer – the Ukrainian BMT-72-140 Main Battle Tank.

BMT-72 prototype

As usual, a bit of history.

The BMT-72 was a Ukrainian attempt to convert a Main Battle Tank into an infantry carrier while retaining all its armor and firepower.

As the name suggests, a T-72 hull was used as the basis for the project. The hull was cut right behind the turret and a small troop compartment was inserted between the turret ring and the engine compartment, giving the vehicle its uncanny, long appearance. Five men could fit into the troop compartment that was accessible through several hatches behind the turret.

The engine was also changed to a domestic one as the Ukrainian 6TD series of engines were very compact. The turret was replaced with one belonging to T-80UD, likely for availability purposes in case of mass-production.

T-72-120 prototype

A single prototype was developed around 2002 and was offered primarily to the Ukrainian Army. There was unfortunately very little interest from Ukraine’s side, partially due to budgetary constraints and partially due to the experimental nature of the vehicle. Afterwards, the vehicle was offered for export for several years without success before it faded into obscurity for more than a decade. In 2018, a new version of this vehicle appeared – kind of. The hull of the old vehicle was combined with a turret from another unsuccessful prototype called T-72-120.

The T-72-120 tank was also offered for export. The main idea behind it was replacing the old Soviet 125mm gun with a NATO standard 120mm smoothbore cannon called KBM2. The cannon was automatically loaded from a large bustle that was added to the turret. At some point in the mid-2010s, the designers decided to combine both projects, albeit unsuccessfully.

BMT-72 late prototype with T-72-120 turret

In 2018, this vehicle appeared not as a working prototype, but as part of the BREM-84 ARV capability demonstration – it was simply towed around, and that was its final appearance. The entire concept suffered from a number of issues, from agility to the fact the troops couldn’t get out when the gun was facing forward because their hatches were covered by the turret.

140mm Baghira gun

Our version of the BMT-72 uses the T-72-120 turret with one major change. The 120mm KBM2 gun was replaced by another Ukrainian experimental weapon called Baghira. This 140mm smoothbore cannon was developed in the late 1990s to fit into standard 125mm mounts. In real life, this gun never appeared on the BMT-72 but we took this liberty to make sure the vehicle is appropriate for its Tier.

[/p]
In Armored Warfare, the BMT-72-140 will be a Tier 10 Premium Main Battle Tank.
[p]
The main idea behind the BMT-72-140 gameplay is that you’ll have a Main Battle Tank that’s capable of deploying infantry. This is the vehicle’s unique feature although its gameplay will be interesting as well.

Armor-wise, we’re looking at something akin to the T-64BVs – a rather thin hull (roughly comparable to Tier 8 T-72B3) complemented by powerful Nizh ERA as well as two APS systems – the Varta soft-kill APS and the Zaslin hard-kill APS. The vehicle will have a lot of hitpoints as well but it will not be an armored behemoth but rather a relatively mobile and high hitting Main Battle Tank.

Its 1200hp engine is more than enough for its roughly 50 tons and the biggest advantage it’ll have will be its powerful 140mm gun capable of firing APFSDS, HE and regular HEAT rounds. And, of course, there’s the infantry deployment of all three usual types – anti-tank troops, mortar troops and sniper.

Overall, the vehicle will be an effective Main Battle Tank capable of dealing out a lot of damage but its relatively thin armor (as well as poor side protection) means that it will be more effective as a fire support vehicle than a classic frontline breakthrough tank.

We hope that you’ll enjoy the vehicle and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!
XM2001 Crusader
The XM2001 Crusader is an American attempt to replace the M109A6 Paladin in the 1990s with something more modern. The project was cancelled in 2002 due to its heavy weight. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

In Armored Warfare, the XM2001 Crusader is a Tier 10 Premium Self-Propelled Gun. The Crusader is an ideal vehicle for players who like to play aggressively. Dominate the battlefield with unrivalled firepower of a three-round 155mm magazine paired with guided HE rounds, and retreat under the cover of smoke thanks to your speed and agility. The Crusader is the ultimate SPG you've been dreaming of!

The Crusader is available in our Web Shop via Loot Crates. Collect 100 blueprint pieces from these crates to obtain the vehicle.
Namer
The Namer IFV is an Israeli heavy fighting vehicle version of the Namer platform developed in the early 2000s from the Merkava Main Battle Tank. Israel is a small country and cannot affect high infantry losses, which is why the Namer features extremely high levels of protection. The IFV variant is fitted with a Rafael turret, featuring 30mm autocannon and a Spike missile launcher. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Namer is a Tier 10 Premium Tank Destroyer. As its history suggests, it is a superheavy TD with its protection levels being amongst the highest of its class. It is slow and ponderous but its thick front can deflect even advanced shells while maintaining adequate firepower thanks to its autocannon and ATGM combination. Its MBT-like characteristics make this vehicle quite forgiving for new players, but, as they say, a jack-of-all-trades is a master of none.

The Namer Tier 10 Premium TD is available in our Web Shop via Loot Crates. Collect 100 blueprint pieces from these crates to obtain the vehicle.
M1A2C War Pig Skin
This skin for the M1A2C Tier 9 Main Battle Tank fits your Abrams with a Barracuda camouflage kit that not only unlocks certain modules for you, but can also change color based on the paint you select on your vehicle. You can read more in our dedicated article.

The skin is available as a part of the War Pig Bundle, which contains the following items:

  • Skin: War Pig
  • 3 Platinum Loot Crates
  • 500 Gold

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
M8 Ridgway Skin
This skin for the M8-120 Thunderbolt II Tier 9 Light Tank is based on our idea of what would the M8 have looked like, had it been a part of Operation Just cause, the American invasion of Panama. Its look is based off an existing M551 Sheridan “Airborne Thunder”, which participated in the said operation. You can read more in our dedicated article.

The skin is available as a part of the Ridgway Bundle, which contains the following items:

  • Ridgway skin for M8-120 Thunderbolt II
  • Field Drab base paint (learn more)
  • 7 Platinum Loot Crates
  • 1.500 Gold

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
Warhammer Skin for M1A2
This skin for the M1A2 Tier 8 progression Main Battle Tank is based on the real American Abrams tanks, which were seen and photographed during the Iraq War. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

This skin is available in a bundle along with the following items:

  • Iraq War ochre base paint (used by the U.S. Army)
  • U.S. Cavalry decal
  • U.S. Company decal
  • Thunderbolt decal (this historical decal appeared on a real early Abrams in honor of General Creighton Abrams’ personal Sherman tank during the Second World War)

Please note that the bundle includes the skin but not the M1A2 MBT itself. This tank needs to be obtained via progression directly in the game.

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
Bradley AAWS-H
The Bradley AAWS-H Tank Destroyer was an attempt by Loral Vought to mount four kinetic guided missiles on an extendable arm while using the Bradley IFV chassis as a platform. Kinetic missiles were cutting edge tech back in the 1980s – unlike standard ATGMs, they destroyed the target by their kinetic energy instead of a HEAT warhead, accelerating to several times the speed of sound. There was little to no defense against them, although they did have some drawbacks, which was why they were never adopted in real life. You can read more about the vehicle in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Bradley AAWS-H is a Tier 8 Premium Tank Destroyer. It’s an ATGM-based TD, carrying special kinetic missiles that actually become more effective with increasing distance to your target. It is the embodiment of a long-range missile carrier and is perfect for players who prefer sniping to close combat.

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
Stryker ADATS
ADATS stands for “Air Defense Anti-Tank System,” describing its purpose very well. The system is intended to engage both air and ground armored targets. It was developed in the 1980s by a Swiss company called Oerlikon-Contraves and was offered as an interesting hybrid that would be able to deal with both Soviet tanks and helicopters or attack planes. Unfortunately for it, it came too late – only Canada would actually accept it in service and the end of the Cold War meant the end to all attempts at its large-scale introduction. The ADATS missiles were quite large but, more importantly, extremely fast and were certain to be extremely destructive to any Soviet armored targets, even though this thankfully never had to be tested in real combat. The ADATS turret was offered for a wide variety of platforms and was actively installed on a vehicle that is kind of like a cousin to the Stryker, the Canadian LAV-III. In this configuration, the vehicle was called MMEV.

In Armored Warfare, Stryker ADATS is a Tier 9 Premium Tank Destroyer. It is a wheeled vehicle armed with two weapon systems – powerful long-range guided missiles and short-range unguided rockets, offering it some survivability in short range combat as well as the ability to deal tremendous damage if left to its devices.

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
M1A1 Storm with Desert Storm bundle
In 1985, the Abrams was upgraded with, amongst other things, the 120mm M256 smoothbore cannon. Over 5000 M1A1 tanks were produced until 1992. This tank participated in Operation Desert Storm, which forged its legendary reputation.

In Armored Warfare, the M1A1 Storm is a Tier 7 Premium Main Battle Tank. The M1A1 Storm look was inspired by Operation Desert Storm, including a gorgeous camouflage net model. But, more importantly, this tank is equipped with a massive frontal dozer blade, adding extra armor and ramming damage to the long list of its advantages.

This vehicle is also available in the Desert Storm Bundle. As its name suggests, the bundle contains several Operation Desert Storm and War in Iraq-related items, including:

  • M1A1 Storm Tier 7 Premium MBT
  • Warhammer skin for the M1A2 Tier 8 MBT
  • Iraq War ochre base paint (used by the U.S. Army)
  • American Red Desert MERDC camouflage
  • American Grey Desert MERDC camouflage
  • U.S. Flag decal
  • U.S. Flag banner

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
Sabre
The Sabre is an interesting British recon vehicle, assembled together from older Scorpion hulls and Fox turrets after both parts were brought to zero hour state (completely overhauled) by a company called Alvis. The resulting vehicle from the early 1990s was called Sabre and, considering it was made of decades old components, it worked fairly well as a scouting vehicle, participating in the Iraq War as well as in several peacekeeping missions. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Tier 6 Sabre Premium Armored Fighting Vehicle is one of the deadliest vehicles on the battlefield thanks to its rather unique upward-aimed Swingfire missile launcher that allows it to fire over obstacles or while hidden, for example behind uneven terrain. While being quite difficult to master, this ability makes it a potent ambusher, especially in skilled hands.

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
Challenger 1 Falcon
The Falcon is an experimental turret developed in the early 2000s in Jordan as an upgrade to the Jordanian Al-Hussein (Challenger 1) Main Battle Tanks. It's a low profile turret, armed with an automatically loaded Swiss 120mm L/50 RUAG smoothbore gun, capable of firing standard NATO ammunition. The operator controls the turret from inside the vehicle's hull, significantly improving crew protection. A prototype was built and tested, but the design was never mass-produced.

In Armored Warfare, the Challenger 1 Falcon is a Tier 8 Premium Main Battle Tank. The best word to characterize this lumbering behemoth in the game is “tough” – its excellent hull armor shrugs off most shells while the damage its low profile turret takes when it is reduced by 90% thanks to the fact the crew is not located directly in it. Despite being generally very slow and sluggish, the Challenger 1 Falcon can take tremendous punishment and is ideal for the players who prefer the British Main Battle Tank play style.

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.
Shadow Protocol Loot Crate
The Shadow Protocol Loot Crate is now available. This Loot Crate contains Shadow Protocol Battle Coins and Boosters.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

  • Battle Coins are the primary currency of the Shadow Protocol Battle Path campaign and are used to progress through it and to obtain its prizes.
    • Battle Coin
Boosters are usable only during an active Battle Path and increase your Battle Coin income by 900 percent for two hours.

This bundle is available in our Web Shop.

We hope that you will enjoy the offer and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!
