In Development: Hunter AFV

Commanders!

Two vehicles of the upcoming Battle Path remain to be announced and today, we’d like to unveil one of them. Unlike the previous AFV, this one is on the heavier side, comes from Singapore and it’s called Hunter AFV.

Another alternative name for this vehicle is NGAFV (or Next Gen AFV), since it belongs to a whole program to replace the obsolete M113 APC in Singaporean service and to operate alongside its predecessor, another indigenous Singaporean IFV called Bionix. Hunter is the name of the production model of this program. The Hunter AFV is the pinnacle of bleeding edge of technology. In this sense, it can be compared to the AS21 Redback and both vehicles share several characteristics, not the least of which being relatively large size. This bulky IFV offers considerable levels of protection and firepower. It is expected to serve in the Singaporean army in large numbers in the near future with its mass-production having recently begun. The details about this vehicle’s history will be disclosed in a separate article.

In Armored Warfare, the Hunter AFV will be a Tier 9 Premium Armored Fighting Vehicle that will be available via the upcoming Battle Path Loot Crates, which you’ll be able to obtain for Battle Coins. As its description above suggests, it will be a rather standard-sized IFV with good levels of protection and excellent firepower. It will also be the first vehicle to use a new type of armor, NERA.

But before we get into any details, the usual disclaimer:

The numbers below are very preliminary as the vehicle has not been properly tested. They are sure to change and should only be discussed as an indicator of how we’d like to set the vehicle up.

With that being said, let’s look at those protection levels and the new armor mechanics this vehicle will feature. The vehicle itself will be sufficiently armored with its frontal plating protecting the crew from most autocannons. The turret will also be unmanned, further adding to its protection levels and, last but not least, the Hunter will also include a Trophy APS.

The really interesting part comes in form of the NERA armor type. NERA stands for Non-Explosive Reactive Armor (or sometimes Non-Energetic Reactive Armor) and is pretty much what its name suggests – an additional armor set that achieves the anti-HEAT ERA effect without the use of explosive filler in its elements. Instead, its elements contain inert filler (for example a special type of rubber) that expands as the impact energy of the shell dissipates into it. The advantage of this system is that it’s much safer than standard ERA. On the downside, equally sized NERA will never be as effective as actual ERA.

In Armored Warfare, NERA will be a hybrid of spaced armor and ERA. In other words, for all intents and purposes, it will act as spaced armor covering exposed parts of the vehicle, which means that to damage the vehicle by penetrating its main armor, you have to first defeat the NERA armor thickness. The difference is that NERA elements will have their own sets of hitpoints and will become damaged when fired upon. The protection level of NERA elements will decrease with their hitpoint loss (there will be four stages of NERA damage). After taking a sufficient amount of hits, NERA will break completely and will no longer provide any protection.

Mechanics-wise:
 • NERA armor will not allow for ricochets to happen
 • NERA armor will come with different coefficients against different shell types
 • NERA armor will not be bypassed or ignored by special projectiles such as tandem HEAT warheads or kinetic missiles
 • Powerful hits (that penetrate both the NERA and the main armor of the tank behind it) can seriously damage the NERA but do not necessarily have to destroy it outright

In other words, what this means is that a vehicle with NERA will start with very good protection that will gradually decrease as the vehicle takes fire. In this case, Hunter’s NERA protection will be amongst the best of its Tier bracket and class, but will decrease to average only over the course of battle. The firepower of this vehicle will be rather conventional with its weapons consisting of:
 • 30mm Bushmaster Mk.44 autocannon
 • Spike-ER ATGMs

The Bushmaster autocannon will fire 192mm penetration APFSDS and standard HE rounds at 500 rounds per minute or so (continuous belt-fed feed system) and will feature excellent -12 degrees depression and +70 degrees elevation.

The Spike-ER ATGM dual launcher will be able to fire two missiles in three seconds, followed by a longer reload period. The missiles will have HEAT warheads with 1000mm of penetration and will have the self-homing ability. These missiles will not fly extremely fast, but will be easy to control.

This vehicle’s firepower will be possible to further enhance by the means of additional progression to:
 • Have two missiles in the air at the same time
 • Fire two missiles at once

The latter will effectively mean an ATGM “double tap” feature but will come at a price – with it installed, it will no longer be possible to launch a single missile at all, so every single ATGM launch will be followed by a long reload period.

As for the vehicle’s mobility, it will be good, excellent even – not the absolutely best, but somewhere between AS21 and K21. Hunter’s 711hp engine will allow it to go as fast as 70 km/h.

Utility-wise, the Hunter will have average camouflage factor (even though its engine will be harder to detect by enemy thermal imagers) but also excellent view range and will be able to deploy mechanized infantry.

As tactics go, the Hunter will be very universal. Its NERA armor will give it some edge early on in battle and its firepower will allow it to take care of most targets on the battlefield – with the “double tap” module enabled, it will hit especially hard with its first strike. At the same time, however, it will not excel in any specific discipline and will, unlike some other high-end vehicles, allow you to make some mistakes instead of exploding whenever someone looks at it funny. Rugged and reliable, it will provide an interesting middle-ground alternative to the fast but rather fragile K21 and the absolute chonker that is the AS21.

We hope that you will enjoy this vehicle and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

Developer Diary: Dynamic Dirt System

Commanders!

With the last 0.31 update, we’ve launched one of the biggest planned graphics improvements to the game – the Dynamic Dirt System. The goal of this system is to make the battlefields look more realistic. Take a look at our trailer:

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Simply put, vehicles will get progressively dirtier as they drive through rough terrain – snow, sand, mud, this all will stick to the models in order to make them appear even more realistic. After all, your vehicle wouldn’t be squeaky clean with an intensive battle behind it. Don’t worry; this feature does not come at a cost of any FPS.

What do you think about this system and the level of dirt in your Garage? Please let us know in the survey below:

Special Operations: Story So Far

Commanders!

Armored Warfare features a storyline you can participate it by playing the Special Operations mode.
Spirithaven
Chapter 1 – Person of Interest
 • Date: July 16, 2044
 • Location: Takahashi, Japan

Almost a year has passed since Hana Buric and Austin Harper helped Magnus Holter to escape Enigma's Moscow prison. The Resistance grew stronger, but it's still not powerful enough to wage a large scale war. That is why Magnus offered to capture a key asset of the enemy — James Todd Litteral, the leader on the National Patriot Activist Army. Litteral was one of the few people on the planet, who can provide the Resistance with Enigma's command center coordinates, allowing them to take out Enigma and its leader, Victor Blaze, in one fell swoop, and end its reign of terror.

The mission went surprisingly smoothly, even better than Hana had hoped for even though southern Japan turned out to be all but welcoming with local gangs and militia roaming everywhere. Despite the globalization trends of the early 21st century, the Okayama prefecture kept, for the most part, its traditional, rural way of life intact. However, even the most relentless and traditionalist of Japanese samurai had the need to arm themselves with cutting edge weaponry that Litteral was more than happy to provide in exchange for loyalty and, more importantly, protection.

Despite fighting their way through several groups of enemy troops, Hana’s forces managed to push the local gangs out of the local villages and the castle where Litteral turned out to be hiding. Led by Austin Harper, the Resistance Special Forces stormed the stronghold, capturing Litteral along with his retinue. As he was escorting the prisoner out, Harper promised Hana that he would make him talk.

Chapter 2 – Wandering the Mists
 • Date: July 16, 2044
 • Location: Shikotan, Japan

The info Harper managed to extract from Litteral placed Victor Blaze, Enigma’s leader, on Shikotan, a small island off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost region. Hana immediately dispatched Magnus Holter, who was already eager to pay Enigma back for his capture in Moscow. However, despite his best efforts, Harper was not able to make Litteral tell him any specifics of the place – a base was supposed to be located there, that much was sure, but when it came to its size or importance, that was something Litteral kept to himself.

The mists of the island dominated by a large mountain turned out to be most unwelcoming as Magnus’ forces came under attack from the NPAA almost immediately. Fighting through several groups of security confirmed to him what he suspected all along – this unassuming place was more than it seemed. At first glance, there was nothing on the island that would point to anything sinister going on, the area looked practically deserted save for several fishing installations, including a large port.

Following the trail of enemies indeed led Magnus to the foot of the mountain and a large set of doors hiding an elevator to Enigma’s innermost sanctum. Victor Blaze was here, of that Magnus was certain. There was only one thing left to do. With that thought, Magnus severed the radio connection with Hana.

Chapter 3 – Disaster
 • Date: July 16, 2044
 • Location: Tsushima, Japan

Later that day, back in Tsushima, the Resistance base Hana was planning the sorties from, was re-captured by Enigma forces that deployed several of the dreaded aerial warships. Hana’s ships, returning from the trip to Takahashi, immediately came under attack by Enigma with one of them being blown up en route to the base’s approach. The connection to Harper, who had stayed behind, was also severed.

With their whereabouts unknown and barely making the landing herself, Hana and her troops had no choice but to fight through the Enigma defenders to re-capture the base since the only viable way off the area was the flight of V-22 Osprey VTOL aircraft, operated by the Resistance.

They almost made it, the Ospreys were in their grasp, but Enigma managed to destroy them before the Resistance could take these valuable aircraft back. On the upside, Hana managed to get in touch with Harper, who confirmed that Litteral had escaped during the attack. Harper himself was beset by Enigma forces and could provide no assistance for that moment.

Desperate, Hana decided to play her last hand – she first captured the EMP guns that knocked out Harper’s ship and then used their cover to take over a landed Enigma warship in an attempt to stage a rescue for Magnus, who, she was convinced, was in trouble. During the fighting, Harper expressed his doubts about Magnus since he was aware of the Enigma files that he and Ryan Miller had captured in the United States. However, he wasn’t able to deter Hana’s desire for Magnus’ rescue and eventually grudgingly accepted that a rescue effort would have to be made. The two then set off to Shikotan using Hana’s stolen warship.

Chapter 4 – At Hell's Gate
 • Date: July 17, 2044
 • Location: Shikotan, Japan

Using the hijacked warship, Hana Buric and Austin Harper make their way to Shikotan only to discover what Magnus had seen the day before – a massive Enigma base in the middle of an old volcano, housing a previously unseen marvel of technology – Victor Blaze’s massive flagship.

They find Magnus Holter alive and in the middle of a battle with Blaze’s forces. Magnus is shocked at first to see them, but quickly realizes they have to work together to defeat Victor Blaze’s defenses and take down his flagship.

One by one, Blaze’s defenses are stripped away until the ship lies broken on the bottom of the volcano’s caldera. Magnus’s and Hana’s forces board the wreck with Magnus disembarking his vehicle and launching a hunt for Blaze himself. Cornered, Blaze fights like a man possessed but eventually succumbs to Magnus’ fury and is shot in the guts. As he bleeds out on the cold metal floor of his ship’s bridge, he wonders whether Magnus and Hana even know what they’ve done. Magnus, equally wounded, triggers the ship’s self-destruct mechanism and with his dying breath pleads with Hana to escape the base while she can.

She does so reluctantly, watching the carnage unfold underneath her as she escapes with Harper aboard their commandeered Enigma vessel. The entire area surrounding the island is covered in smoke and ash with a massive volcano erupting nearby. As the ship flies away from the place of Magnus’ final rest, Hana can’t help but feel melancholic about the fate of one of the greatest men she’d ever know – but deep inside, she feels something else as well, a primal dread of Blaze’s dire warnings. They should be celebrating, but the mood aboard the warship reaches new lows as the crew starts wondering why their base isn’t responding to their hails. In fact, nobody is...

Commanders, Enigma has fallen but your journey continues on. Now’s your turn to scavenge what you can from the remnants of Enigma’s Shikotan base during the Raid event. Don’t miss out on any valuables Enigma might have left behind in the rubble.

See you on the battlefield!
