A New Threat to Indie Game Titles
So, if you have been keeping up with the Steam News, or play/support other indie titles, you may be aware of steams proposed new system for game submission.
Here is a basic run down.
- Steam Greenlight will be scrapped.
- Developers will now have to pay a 1 off fee for each game
- Initial Reports indicate it will cost anything upto $5000 per title (Although no official word yet)
And this is where the problem is. Most Developers who use Steam Greenlight are just like me. One person with a great idea for a game and the dedication to put it to plan. It could be in RPG Maker, Unity, UE4 or any engine. And it's either just them (As it is for me) or a small group.
With this new system one of two things could happen:
1 - All Indie Devs who want to release on steam, leave the platform and go to other 3rd party sites and release their game for free there.
2 - They still publish their game on steam, but rather than it being Free or a really low price they change anything up to AAA Game prices in an attempt to turn a profit
And I know that if I was to release my game under this new system I would be planning to change between $5.99 - $9.99 (And still have the DLC) and probably not have been much of a success.

As a gamer, please let me know what you think of these changes and I would love to see this from the Gamers side as well as a Developers side.
