The Underwater Research Center is a special research unit of the Russian Geographical Society that has been set up to study underwater spaces and objects. The research center has absorbed the best professional expertise of specialists from the ranks of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the Navy, the Defense Ministry, and the National Underwater Research Center. Fitted with specialized equipment, the Underwater Research Center—since the very first years of its existence—has become a core organization in Russia in the field of underwater research.

In addition to expeditionary activities to study sunken objects and underwater spaces, the research center pays close attention to educational and awareness-raising projects. Since 2017, together with the Orlyonok Russian children's center, the Underwater Research Center has been implementing the Oceanautica program. The organization also hosts exhibitions and produces documentaries. One of the most important missions of the Underwater Research Center is to create a 3D interactive map of all Russian underwater terrain and sunken objects thereon.
