History
In mid-1940, the U.S. Navy issued an order for the construction of a series of Baltimore-class heavy cruisers, which became the standard ships of this type in the U.S. Navy during World War II. At the same time, the General Board of the U.S. Navy assigned the Bureau of Ships the task of developing a design for a completely new heavy cruiser with improved armor, a greater number of main battery guns, and enhanced speed.
Prepared in September 1940, the design, codenamed CA-A—which featured reinforced armor and could theoretically achieve speeds of up to 34 knots—was not much bigger than Baltimore in terms of displacement. Both ships carried nine main battery guns. The CA-C design, presented in March 1941, which fulfilled all the requirements of the General Board, was close in dimensions to the already ordered Alaska-class large cruisers. A balance was found in the preliminary design, codenamed CA-B—with a displacement of 17,000 tons and speed of 33 knots, she had twelve 203 mm guns placed in four turrets.
The CA-B project has been resurrected in the form of World of Warships cruiser Anchorage.
Key Features
- Anchorage is armed with twelve 203 mm guns mounted in four triple turrets, making her capable of unleashing a weighty salvo.
- Anchorage's AP shells have enhanced ricochet angles like those of the researchable American heavy cruisers.
- The Hydroacoustic Search consumable and torpedo armament she carries enable Anchorage to perform effectively in close quarters combat, while her Smoke Generator—a feature not typically found on American heavy cruisers—will help her escape situations where she finds herself under concentrated enemy fire.
- She earns more credits per battle, and her permanent camouflage adds a 50% XP bonus per battle and reduces the cost of the ship's post-battle service by 10%.
