Dead Cells dev's new Prince of Persia roguelike is a must-play

Dead Cells is, without a doubt, one of the best roguelikes of all time. Initially developed by Motion Twin, the hit action game was eventually handed over to Evil Empire following its 1.0 launch. On top of spearheading Dead Cells, Evil Empire has worked on multiple retro IPs over the past few years, and we now know that one of them is the newly announced roguelike The Rogue Prince of Persia. I got a chance to play the first few levels and fight a boss, and it's safe to say that fans of Dead Cells will find Evil Empire's latest to be an invigorating, if at times familiar, experience.

Dead Cells custodians Evil Empire are reportedly working on a new Prince of Persia roguelike, out this year

Evil Empire, the studio responsible for the previous five or so years of updates to Motion Twin’s roguelite metroidvania game Dead Cells, are set to release a new roguelite set in the Prince of Persia universe “later this year.”

That’s according to Insider Gaming, who were told by sources that ‘The Rogue Prince of Persia’, as the game is rumoured to be named, will first release in Steam early access. Six years after launch, PC's most-loved roguelike is making a comeback

What makes a great roguelike? It has to be hard - or at least, it has to be punishing, so that every lost run feels like a brutal lesson, and every victory feels gigantic. It also needs to be stylish. You're going to be spending a lot of time running and re-running these levels, so they need to look and sound good. You want a diverse array of enemies, a huge library of attacks and abilities, and a lot of variation. It's a tough combination. But one of the greatest roguelikes, and a modern PC classic, Dead Cells pulls it all off with brio. Combining elements of Metroidvania and platforming, six years since its full launch, it's having a sudden renaissance on Steam. And if you want to join in, it's also available right now at a sizable discount.

Dead Cells quickly became a pillar of the roguelike Metroidvania (wow that's a mouthful) genre when it was released back in 2018. Since the game's launch, developer Motion Twin has been hard at work pumping out content releases to give players just that much more content to chew on, including four different DLC expansions. Now, the core game, plus all of its beefy DLC, is on a huge sale on Steam, making it one of the more tantalizing sales of the year thus far.
