Beta 6.4 - Controller Map and Fixes

Tonight's build includes a controller map detailing the default controls for controllers. You can access this from the Escape menu once in the world.

This update also has a couple of fixes in it:
  • Fixed a bug that caused the scroll- bar in the crafting and building UI to not reset back to the top after closing and re-opening the UI.
  • Fixed a bug that caused buildings to immediately place when choosing a building to craft using a controller.

Beta 6.3 - Controller Support for Build Mode

Beta 6.3 adds more controller support for build mode. This now works for both placing a new building and editing your town's existing buildings - moving, rotating, etc. The UI for upgrading wooden homes and changing the stone texture on your champion's home are also supported.

In the below gif I am using the controller to cycle through my existing buildings and move them to new locations!
  • To enter build mode press X.
  • Once in build mode you can either build a structure or manage your existing town.
  • To build a new structure use the d-pad up and down and then press A to build that structure.
  • To enter manage mode, press X. This will place a light blue square around a building in your town. You can move this square to select buildings using d-pad left and right. This will cycle through your buildings.
  • Pressing A will pick up the building (or open the UI in the case of a house or the champion's house)
  • Move the building using the d-pad.
  • Rotate the building using left and right bumper.
  • Press A to put the building in it's new location.
  • Pressing X will move you out of manage mode.
  • You can use the left stick to move the camera. Pressing down the left stick will toggle between the camera's two movement speeds.

With this update, the only thing left is the virtual keyboard for entering your character name, town name, and renaming an NPC. After that I'll create the UI displaying the controller map and add button mapping.

This update also includes a few quick fixes:
  • Fixed a bug that caused the Haunted Island to not clean up properly after the quest is completed. This could cause problems if you continued playing and started the Orc Quest in the same session.
  • Fixed a typo in the Orc Quest telling you to Press the build mode key while in the Orc Town.
  • Fixed some collisions in the Orc Town that caused the camera to zoom in when nothing was behind you.

Beta 6.2 - Town Manager Controller Support and More

Tonight's build includes a big update to controller support - the town manager! This UI was the most complicated as it has two areas for controller inputs. The top part where all of the job toggles and assign jobs are located and the NPC area where the townspeople are shown. On top of that, sometimes the NPC display has buttons to swap jobs or change their goal and other times those buttons are hidden, like when you pick an NPC for a job or change their name. And, it needed to account for both the regular view and the compressed view...so lots of things to consider!

To scroll through the top portion of the UI you can press the D-pad left and right. Pressing Y will press the button or toggle that is highlighted.

You can scroll through the NPC list using D-pad up and down and activate the highlighted button by pressing A.

This update also includes some fixes and other updates:
  • Pressing Q or E (or right and left bumper on the controller) will now correctly cause your character to roll even if you started an attack.
  • Fixed a bug that sometimes caused a save to fail to load. This was a localization bug related to quests.
  • Fixed a bug in the options menu that failed to save your screen resolution setting properly. This was related to the controller support update when I changed that option from a dropdown list to a slider.
  • Speaking of sliders, the default monitor and anti-aliasing options are also both sliders now rather than dropdowns. Just easier to manipulate with a controller than the dropdowns are.
  • Fixed a localization bug related to when an NPC is going to their shop.
  • Updated the "pet nika" text to use the localization system.
  • Fixed a bug in the farm plots UI that caused the wrong toggles to turn off when using a controller.
  • When using a controller you will no longer jump or kick before speaking to an NPC.

Controller Support is almost done! I'll be adding controller support to the town build mode to allow for picking up already placed buildings, painting roads, changing roof colors, etc. All of the UI is complete except the places where you enter text - naming your character, naming your town, and renaming an NPC. Hoping to wrap all of this up by the end of the month!

Beta 6.1 - More Controller Support

Today's update adds controller support to the Settings UI and for the build mode UI. In build mode, in addition to using up and down on the d-pad to scroll through the buildings, you can now use left and right to choose between the filters (homes, walls, etc.) and press Y to use that filter.

I have two more systems to add controller support to - the town management/NPC system and the build mode building manipulation, such as picking up and moving existing buildings.

After that I'll add a controller button mapping UI and add the controller controls to the various UI that currently explain the keyboard commands.

Beta 6.0 - Controller Support Progress

Made some great progress on controller support so figured I'd make a build. Tonight's build includes a bunch more controller support for various UI in the game, including:
  • Escape Menu
  • Delete Building Confirmation
  • Furniture Placement
  • Death
  • Respec Skills
  • Loot Are You Sure Message UI
  • Mining Choice UI
  • Farm Plots Choice UI
  • Herbalist Choice UI
  • Town Resource Storage

With this update the vast majority of UI now support controller inputs. The UI still left to do include:
  • Settings
  • Build Menu (this is partially done)
  • Townspeople UI
  • Add virtual keyboard for name character, name town, and rename NPC.

That doesn't look like much, but truth is those are some of the more complicated UI. In addition, the really big task that is left is to add controller support for manipulating buildings. Stuff like moving buildings, changing house roof colors, changing Champion Home stone texture, etc. I'll likely do that last as it'll require a custom system that is separate from the UI controller support that I've created.

After that, I'll add controller button mapping, add the controller inputs to the tutorial texts such as How To Fight and the Build Menu, and update the text that says stuff like "Press T to talk to the townsperson". So if you're using a controller, it'll display the controller button rather than "T". And then controller support will be done!

This build also fixes a couple of typos that I found in the localization text.

Thanks you again for the support. I hope everyone is having a great weekend!
