March 2025 development summary

Happy start of spring, dear Ancient Cities followers!

This is the first monthly development summary so everyone can get a taste of where Ancient Cities is headed.

We will briefly cover the main development items we have been working on each month. For more details and spoilers you can read the exclusive weekly dev diaries for patrons on Patreon .
New animal fury game mechanics.
We’re laying the groundwork for animal incursions, your village will soon face wild creatures raiding your stores and farms in search of food or simply in a stampede . This fun new mechanic means more direct, action-packed encounters.

They'll wreak havoc on your settlement causing panic, ruining your resources and crushing your small constructions.

From now on large animals can only be stopped with palisades, breaking through the small fences and spoiling them. The medium-sized animals will continue to respect the fences and finally the small ones will sneak through everywhere.

Finally, we've enabled a tribe tool that lets you target specific groups or animals to scare them off your camp.
Contextual information of the elements on the map
We are testing different ways of displaying on map object information, by means of a tooltip or by simply clicking on the element and displaying it in the selection window.

This is a work in progress feature that's partially available in the early access version exclusively for patrons.
NVidia driver shader compilation crash saga continues.
Nvidia's OpenGL drivers continue to give sporadic issues for some players. We keep flagging these problems to our beloved Nvidia engineers, who also happen to be top-notch badminton players.

This is the last serve we're tossing their way, where the Nvidia OpenGL driver clearly crashes. But they skillfully returned the ball, saying that a specific call in our code messes with their memory.

That ball was swiftly returned, we removed the code so it doesn't get called until after shader compilation. Now, the ball's back in their court as another crash report just rolled in.

Game on! Fingers crossed!
What's next?
We'll keep injecting fresh elements into the animal fury mechanic. This wild ride will wrap up in a few months with the major predator update, while we continue refining the game based on your feedback.

New content update 1.0.6 : Big pelt hut

This update packs in a new nomadic housing, a fresh housing placement mechanism, and the chance to build your own dirt trails. It also delivers improved visuals to the environments, several game balance tweaks, plus bug fixes and optimizations.
NEW HOUSING : THE BIG PELT HUT
In Ancient Cities, this new housing is designed to support medium-sized tribal migrations. You won't have to rely on swarms of tiny, detachable tents anymore. The standout feature? It can be dismantled without wasting materials and assembled in a flash.

There is a range of leather shades and alternative ethnic patterns etched into the hide, complemented by decorative touches like utensils and gourds. Hope you like it!
CONSTRUCTION OF HOUSING NEAR FOOTPATHS
We've introduced a new game mechanic that requires to position dwelling doors near footpaths or walking areas. This new mechanic aims to enhance town layouts, making them feel more organic and realistic.

Also footpaths now play a bigger role. You can lay down segments of dirt trails, perfect for those who want to plan settlement layouts meticulously.
IMPROVED LANDSCAPE VISUALS
We have taken advantage of the need to improve the visualisation of trails to overhaul our terrain rendering system so that every element, from the ground beneath your feet to the seas and rivers, looks much better at any distance and in any atmospheric condition.
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS AND FIXES
We've removed the navigation depth limit on the regional map so now you can reach any island in your regional map!

You'll also enjoy that the background of the game menu now changes each time you start the game instead of always showing the same one.

On top of that, we received reports that crop and till tasks were lagging behind, so we've ramped up their efficiency by 20%. We've also fine-tuned the durability of tools when used for tilling, ensuring a more balanced and realistic gameplay experience.

You can dive into the full list of changes in the changelog section at the end of this article.
GET EXCLUSIVE ACCESS TO THE NEXT GAME UPDATE
As you know, Ancient Cities is an indie project made by two senior programmers working full-time, supported by a small team of skilled freelancers who supply assets to the game.

All Steam earnings go straight back into development, but it's not enough to keep things rolling long-term. That's why we're looking for additional funding options to ensure we can keep improving the game indefinitely.

So here's a reminder: we've got an active Patreon, and your support makes a real difference!
