Patch - The 'cool your jets' release

[p]Do your fans try to escape your machine when running TaleSpire? If so, this patch might be for you!

We have a fix for a long-standing threading issue that has been causing CPU usage on some machines to be noticeably higher than would otherwise make sense.

Here are some very rough observations that we’ve made:

WARNING: We are not set up for rigorous benchmarking, nor do we have the deep knowledge required to do a good job. Take these results as a rumor!

On the Steam Deck, we saw a 7 °C drop in CPU temperature, a ~1000 RPM drop in fan speed, much more stable frame timings, AND all with slightly higher FPS.

On an x86 tablet/laptop convertible with a Ryzen 8840U SoC, running TaleSpire with frame-rate limited to 30fps, we saw an approximately 20% SoC power consumption drop compared to the same setup on our previous release.

And with a 16-Core AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, you could straight up hear that the fans were not being thrashed so hard!

You can see some more hand-wavy findings below the version of this post on our dev-log

Of course, this patch doesn’t fix all the perf issues. We’ve got a lot more in the pipeline that should make TaleSpire even more accessible to our friends on lower-end machines. Which means more folks who can join the fray!

Until next time, we wish you all good CPU temps, and a good week.

Internals patch

[p]This is a very unexciting patch from a gameplay point of view, but it has some stuff we need to make the game more robust.[/p][p]Changes include:[/p]
  • [p]Fix the console as it was starting late and so was missing some important logs during startup[/p]
  • [p]Internal changes to support better workarounds in case of server connectivity issues[/p]
  • [p]Assorted low-level code fixes and improvements[/p]
[p]Hope this finds you well. More fixes and news as they happen![/p][p][/p][p]p.s. If you are into the behind-the-scenes stuff, you can find the dev-log over at https://bouncyrock.com/news/[/p]

Patch: Tuesday fixups

[p]Hi folks,[/p][p]Apparently, there are still bugs, who knew![/p][p]In this release, we fix the following:[/p]
  • [p]An error that would occur if you joined a board while players had an open request for a multi-creature attack[/p]
  • [p]A bug in physics that could cause an error on exit.[/p]
  • [p]Poor handling of a reasonably rare connection issue.[/p]
  • [p]A full crash when TaleSpire was given a malformed tsMod file.[/p]
[p]We are already hard at work on the next set of fixes, so look out for those soon.[/p][p][/p][p]p.s. There may be a slight increase in start-up time due to the validation we've added to the files. We are going to look into speeding that back up in a coming release.[/p]
