Phasmophobia is getting a prison level, which we think may be haunted

It seems everyone loves getting their wits spooked out of them in Phasmophobia, the game about searching for ghosts in abandoned places and then screaming when you find them. It seems as though there's a new location in the works, as developer Kinetic Games has revealed that it's working on a prison level.

As spotted by Game Informer, Kinetic Games today tweeted a screengrab of Phasmophobia's Trello board, which tracks the game's progress through Early Access and provides a roadmap of sorts. The image shows a new entry in the 'In Progress' column, which reads: 'Make a Prison level.' We've analysed the image and we believe this means that the developers are making a prison level for Phasmophobia.

From what we've heard, prison seems like a pretty scary place to be under ideal circumstances, so a prison crawling with poltergeists sounds downright terrifying. What kinds of ghosts haunt a prison? They have to be the worst ghosts, right? It's a troubling theme, though - why would a ghost stick around in a prison anyway? Wouldn't you want to go, I don't know, haunt the bus station nearby instead? Maybe a cool old hotel?

Phasmophobia continues to dominate Steam's top sellers list

Halloween may be done and dusted, but it looks like players aren't yet ready to get off this spooky ride anytime soon. Phasmophobia, the co-op ghostbusting game, has topped Steam's global weekly top sellers list for the fourth consecutive week.

Following its launch back in September, Phasmophobia attracted the attention of players in the run-up to Halloween. The game almost instantly became a smash hit on Twitch, peaking at over 100,000 viewers within its first two weeks according to TwitchTracker. Though viewership on the streaming platform has petered off since then, Phasmophobia continues to beat out heavy hitters like Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and Destiny 2: Beyond Light on Steam.

Whether the ghastly game can retain its top spot for a fifth week in a row remains to be seen. There are a number of big upcoming PC games arriving on Steam this week, but Phasmophobia's comparatively low price could well see it continue to stay a tempting choice for some time. Similarly to Innersloth's Among Us, Phasmophobia is easy to hop into for beginners while offering plenty of content for returning players.

Phasmophobia dev considers lengthening Early Access for bigger updates

Phasmophobia is the moment's hit take on horror games, and while Halloween is behind us, the game's massive success continues. Now, the game's developer is rethinking Early Access - Phasmophobia might stay unfinished for a good deal longer so that the studio can add more content and polish in response to the game's immense success.

"I was originally planning the Early Access to be short", Dknighter, the sole developer at Kinetic Games, tells IGN. The plan was just to "add a few more maps, ghost types and equipment. However, due to the game's popularity, everyone's expectations are increased so I am going to have to reconsider my plans for the game's future."

Dknighter isn't specific on what those bigger plans might entail, but the game is already set to get "a lot more content", according to the Steam page, including "more equipment, maps, ghosts, and any other content we get suggested from community feedback." It's currently listed for a full release in 2021, "however this may change depending on features added and how the game will progress through Early Access".
