Atomfall's first expansion takes you to a wicked new island when it arrives next week

Developer Rebellion Developments revealed a first look at Atomfall's first DLC expansion yesterday. Titled Wicked Isle, it unsurprisingly brings you to an island called Midsummer Island that is, in fact, a bit wicked, but like, in the bad way, not in the something a teen in the 2000s would say about something they like kind of way. Specifically it'll have a bit more of a folk horror vibe to it, which I'm certainly into conceptually. Lots of great folklore in the UK, as long as it's not stepping over frequently trodden upon territory.

Something wicked this way comes... We are pleased to announce that Wicked Isle, a story expansion for our hit survival action title, Atomfall® will launch on June 3rd. The expansion adds a whole new location to the game, with its own set of characters and enemies as well as additional leads, weapons, skills, items and multiple new endings for the main game.

A new trailer showcasing the content from Wicked Isle is available to watch here:

Drawing on the folk horror elements of the game for inspiration, the story expansion is set on Midsummer Island. To cross to the island players must talk to the boat-keeper who can be found on the jetty in Wyndham Village. He will give you information about the island as well as your first Lead.

“Midsummer is located close to the Windscale Atom Plant and as a result the levels of infection in both the people and environment are higher than on the mainland,” explained Ben Fisher, Head of Design at Rebellion. “You are going to meet new enemy factions including pirate bandits and infected druids. To help you survive there are new weapons to be found on the island including a devastating Blunderbuss shotgun, a new bow, cutlass, daggers and the Beekeeper’s Staff. You will also be able to acquire new skills which will aid you on your quest as well as an upgraded metal detector which will enable you find even more loot caches.”

The Leads you uncover in Wicked Isle will open a variety of story threads, some of which create new potential endings for the main Atomfall® game.

Included in the Deluxe Edition and in the Deluxe Upgrade Pack and available to purchase separately when released (£14.99, €19.99, $19.99), Wicked Isle will be available from June 3rd on PC via Steam.

A UK-based post-apocalyptic survival-action game, Atomfall® is inspired by the real life Windscale nuclear incident in the 1950s. Players will embark on a fictionalised adventure meeting a cast of weird and wonderful characters as they try to uncover the mystery and escape the quarantine zone. So far over 2.5 million players have jumped into the world of Atomfall®.

Atomfall® is available now on PC via Steam. Atomfall® is Certified on Steam Deck.

"Can we find the resources to do it? I don't know" Rebellion's CEO on the likelihood of an Atomfall sequel

I always find it a bit odd when people make comparisons like "new game is the next game you really love" because you're most likely setting yourself up for some kind of disappointment. Atomfall was the most recent game to fall victim to such a framing, with many dubbing it as British Fallout, which it didn't end up being, nor was it likely intended to be. Thus, alongside some other issues, it's had a general reception of "yeah, it's not bad", which in a world of sequels upon sequels isn't always the response a developer might want. Still, a sequel is still clearly on developer Rebellion's mind.

Rebellion's CEO says 'it looks like we want to do more Atomfall' but it will depend on whether the studio can 'find the resources to do it'

Rebellion's open world shooter Atomfall released in March among some stiff competition, landing in the same month as Hazelight's cooperative hit Split Fiction and a week after the massively popular Assassin's Creed Shadows. Yet according to CEO Jason Kingsley, this hasn't stopped Atomfall from becoming a success in its own right. Indeed, Atomfall has done so well for Rebellion that Kingsley is considering making it into a series...
