Arcs and EVE's Narrative Driven Design

Story-Loving Capsuleers,

The narrative prelude to upcoming Factional Warfare changes is officially underway ushering in a new era in EVE development. Arcs act as the driver for introducing new features in EVE while also allowing you, the capsuleers, to interact with the story and in some cases, even impact it directly.

Narrative arcs have become the framework for planning, designing, and implementing Factional Warfare changes with the goal of using arcs to guide future development of EVE’s living universe overall. You can read more about the upcoming Factional Warfare changes in the EVE – A Living Universe Presentation here and in the State of the Union devblog.

If you want to dive even deeper into narrative arcs in EVE, tune into the CCPTV stream today at 15:00 UTC co-hosted by CCP Convict and Uriel Anteovnuecci with CCP Loki and CCP Delegate Zero as guests.

A key goal of arcs is to reflect a changing, living universe with a background that affects many aspects of EVE; one that you can take part in influencing and shaping. Some of you have already risen to the call from the empires’ military leaders and have helped discover and decipher clues scattered throughout New Eden providing intelligence on how events are progressing.

The empires of New Eden have taken their first steps towards fulfilling their agendas in the militia warzones with further plans and responses to their enemy’s activities already underway.
Empire Agendas
With the Triglavian Collective largely confining its activities to the occupied systems of Pochven, the empires are once again competing against one another for territory, resources, and technology. The four empires are central to EVE’s universe and EVE’s story. They are considered the four core pillars of EVE in terms of the content and narrative. Developing a sense of each individual empire having an agenda of its own is an important focus of the narrative design work.

Renewing the tangibility of each empire’s agency and goals begins with the upcoming Factional Warfare changes. The opposing goals of the Caldari State and Gallente Federation will be apparent to players and able to be acted upon to advance and influence their storylines. Similarly, the imperial agenda of the Amarr Empire is opposed by the specific goals of the Minmatar Republic, with these also open for player responses and influences to drive or guide the narrative.
Narrative Objectives
As events move towards changes to Factional Warfare and to the landscape of the militia warzones, there will be narrative objectives that will play a role in shaping the territorial and technological balance of power between the empires. These objectives will be within the framework of the militia warzones and will be affected by the state of play in each warzone, but will have their own gameplay specific to each objective.

Holding space in the militia warzones in and around narrative objective star systems will be important. It will advance the agenda of the relevant empire and the associated gameplay will provide finer scale opportunities for supporters of each empire to advance their goals.

These narrative objectives will provide a key series of events leading up to the changes in Factional Warfare. They will offer a preview of the way that geography and objectives work together to give a more grounded meaning to the actions taken by players in the militia warzones.

The developing Advantage system will in future involve specific content designed to interact with the overall Frontlines and Advantage changes, while providing many opportunities to hook narrative events and objectives naturally into future Factional Warfare gameplay.
Impact and Flow of Narrative Arcs
Narrative arcs in general have a structure that includes events that can be influenced by player activity and events that will unfold as part of the overarching storyline regardless of player actions.

Players have always made the best stories in New Eden, and we want the Universe not only to live up to those stories but also give players more agency to affect the goings-on in New Eden. There is a framework we have to operate within for this to make sense, so players don’t have FULL control of everything.

The narrative structure requires defined starting and ending points for each arc with critical arc-defining events being established to fill out the basic framework. How these events turn out can still be influenced by player action when narrative objectives and gameplays feed into them. An informed player will always know what is at stake, and what they are fighting for.

The present narrative arc and its different threads and objectives will determine certain outcomes, particularly in terms of the technological edge some empires may gain in the context of Factional Warfare.

There will also be opportunities to reshape the map in certain ways in future narrative objectives while the empires themselves may take steps to secure their own grip on key territories. The stakes of each narrative objective and the scope and scale of what will be affected by players will need to be widely communicated.

With all this said, the rollout of the narrative continues and major narrative objectives in the warzones are slowly becoming apparent as the storyline unfolds. Be sure to tune into the CCPTV stream today at 15:00 UTC to discuss more.

If you’d like to keep track of how things are heating up amongst the factions, participate in the storyline, and speculate on how ultimately this will impact Factional Warfare in EVE, you can read in-world news at EVE Universe, follow the #NewEdenNews on Twitter, and keep your eyes peeled for clues.

And as always, fly safe!

Caldari Union Day Begins!

Illustrious Capsuleers,

Caldari Union Day is upon us once again with more gifts, rewards, and content than ever before. This annual event celebrates the strength of both the State, and the Caldari Workers Union. Union Day also serves as the time where all eight Caldari megacorporations will come together to host a planning summit for the following year.

This year, the State will be holding a friendly competition between megacorporations for the rights to Jita 4-4's security contract. The corp that wins the contract will become the new protectors of Jita, standing proud at the gates of New Eden’s commercial centre! As a Capsuleer, you can join up as a corporate champion for corp that best represents you. Help them win the contract in the Union Day activities while winning yourself some unique rewards along the way!

The celebrations begin now, running for 12 days through until 6 September.
Combat, Hacking, and Resource Wars
Take part in combat infiltration and hacking sites throughout Caldari space. These challenges come in various difficulties and will reward you with special loot, and points, to help support your chosen corporation in the Jita security tryouts competition.

Resource Wars will also be available for industrially-minded Capsuleers! Head into one of the many mining sites across Caldari space to mine for resources while defending yourself from attack. Each site will earn you Loyalty Points and more support for your corp.
Union Day Rewards
Each of the competing megacorporations is ensuring Capsuleer support is well rewarded. By taking part in sites, and joining the celebrations, you will earn points towards SKINs to show off and boosters to strengthen your ships!

Additionally, during the 12 days of the Union Day celebrations, you can claim additional rewards just for logging into EVE. There are SKINs up for grabs as well as 40,000 Skill Points for Omegas. Remember that you can upgrade to Omega at any point to claim all the previous gifts that you would have received.
Historical Trail and Military Parades
Follow the historical trail of the Caldari legacy to learn about the story of the State and its people. There are monuments to visit across Caldari space and plenty of info about the megacorporations and what they stand for.

You can also visit titan military parades hosted by each of the megacorps. Warp in and launch some fireworks at the titans for a Skill Point gift!

To help you along on your journey through Caldari history, there will be a 2AU/s warp speed bonus throughout Caldari space. If you want to learn some more about the history of this conglomerate, check out EVE Universe for lore, stories, and more.
State Police SKINs Return
The ever-popular State Police SKINs will be coming back into the New Eden Store during Caldari Union Day on more ships than ever before. Pick up some PLEX, launch EVE, and check out the NES in game to see which ship you want sirens on!

Community Beat for 12 August

Welcome back to the Beat!

We often say that EVE players rock our world. Since our last Beat, that has actually been quite literal! CCP Studios, based in Reykajvik, has played home to some serious geological activity in the last two weeks. After a series of earthquakes, the Geldingadalir volcano became active once again. If you’d like to bring some Icelandic ambiance into your homes, check out the live coverage of the activity below:

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

But we’re not going to be stopped by some pesky lava! This week we take a look back at some developer chats, marvel at AI inspired art, and look forward to some player events in and out of game. Let’s get to it!

AI Generated Art

Text-to-image generators have been all the rage this summer, and players have been creating everything from great memes to jaw-dropping art. Over on Twitter, Veetor – who you may know as the creator of the Abyss Tracker - fed some screenshots from the Abyss through MidJourney and came up with some amazing shots.

Over on the EVE subreddit, Lumielistar created some equally stunning pieces using the same program. We love the aestethic and, if we’re honest, the implied chaos and destruction. AI's just get EVE!

Developer Corner: CCP Psych and CCP Aurora

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

This week we heard from CCP Psych and CCP Aurora, both on CCPTV giving a presentation and answering your follow-up questions on the EVE Online Discord. Topics ranged from high-level plans for FW, to the precise details of proposed new complexes. If you missed any, or just want to rewatch again, you can find the recording in the FAQ Recordings channel on EVE’s Official Discord and you can check the CCPTV recording over on our YouTube channel.

CCP Psych & CCP Aurora loved your questions so much that they agreed to come back in a few weeks. So if you have any questions for them, hop on Discord and ask away!

Eve Meets

Meets are back on the menu! The next few months are rife with player meetups of varying sizes and locations. First up is EVE Glasgow this weekend, and if you’re in the area, you can find out all about it on their Discord server. If you do stop by, make sure to snap a picture with CCP Zelus who will be in attendance. Tweet us a picture and we’ll be sure to reward your efforts.

That goes for people attending EVE London on 27 August, too! CCP Sledgehammer and CCP Zelus are sure to boost your mood with some swag, and who knows what other guests from the CCP London office will be in attendance. Selfies will be rewarded.

On the other side of the Atlantic, EVE North East is returning on 8 September. While each player meetup is unique, EVE North East is hosted at an outdoors campgrounds! There’s room for camping, hiking, and just plain relaxing with your space friends. The stories are always entertaining, and we expect some quality hijinks this year.

Moving into October, we’re happy to hear that EVE Vienna returns on 15 October. EVE online swag is sure to abound for anyone, as last year had some very amazing and unique creations.

Sharks vs Bears

Interested in dipping your toes into the PvP waters, or are you more inclined to show off your skills? Either way, Sharks vs Bears has you covered! Next weekend on 20 August, SvB is hosting a T1 Frigate PvP tournament with billions of isk in prizes. This is open to all levels of experience, and a great way to introduce yourself to PvP. Drawing inspiration from Red vs Blue, SvB aims to bring the content to your doorstep. If you’re interested in this event, or future events, hop on over to their Discord to stay in the loop!

EVE Videos

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

EVE has a rich history of video making, even before YouTube existed! In fact, one of EVE’s more notable players – Chribba – created a file sharing server just so EVE players could have a place to upload their creations. Pilots nowadays continue to live up to – and often exceed – the sky-high expectations that EVE players have come to expect. Check out this video from Amelia Duskspace entitled Tidebringer – where he films various fights and 30-40 person skirmishes from the FCs perspective. Even better? The fleet comp they're flying includes the EDENCOM Stormbringer, cleaving its way through enemies!

If there's more you want to know, or upcoming events you wish to feature, please head over to the EVE Online Forums and let us know!

Until next time, capsuleers!
