Death's Door review: a sturdy and often funny fable about death

If grimdark is a genre, then so must be cutedark. Death's Door glides into this camp on gossamer wings. It's got Hollow Knight's dimples but not its teeth. It's lighter, an appropriately feathery game. For long stretches it is refreshingly untaxing with a few challenging battles. This lightness is its strength. The soulslike undertones are mostly a facade and it is less inspired by Lordran than it is by Hyrule. There are fluffy puzzles, curious dungeons and cute characters with JiGgLiNg diALoGuE tExT. I foresee any Nintendo likers out there immediately thinking: "I'll get this on my Switch". Sadly, you can't, at least not yet. But consider the PC version anyway. For a solid chunk of its playtime this is a pleasing sword-swisher that invites a laid-back evening session of dungeon dawdling. Nothing too hard, nothing too nasty.

Until Betty shows up.

Death's Door nails the action but leaves me hungry for more bird lore

I want Death's Door to waste a little more of my time. I know that's a weird ask, and I can't remember if I've ever felt this way about an action game before. But the premise of Death's Door grabbed me from the first seconds of its reveal trailer earlier this year. Crows as grim reapers, living mundane office worker lives while traveling to fantasy worlds to collect the souls of the dead? I wanted to bathe in that setting immediately. After playing a preview of the first couple hours of Death's Door, I feel like I'm still waiting for it to actually deliver on its premise...

Death's Door is a eldritch take on The Legend of Zelda out next month

The life of a reaper may seem exciting, but in Death's Door it's a somewhat dull affair. You're in a world where no one naturally dies anymore, employed by a murder of lazy, office worker crows tasked with maintaining a sense of order. Things get lively now and then, though, when someone swipes a soul and takes it to a realm untouched by death where they can grow past their expiry and overflow with greed and power.

It's a top-down, eldritch take on The Legend of Zelda that casts you as a crow stuck in the monotonous grind of reaping the souls of the dead, only offered something more exciting when a thief dares to swipe one of your assigned tasks. It was unveiled by Devolver in March, but it got a solid showing at this year's E3 with a developer commentary at Day of the Devs and a release date reveal during Devolver's showcase.

When it comes to combat, you've got plenty of tools to master your trade with. You can cut down a swath of beasts and demigods with melee weapons, arrows, and magic, but only if they don't get the opportunity to punish you for your mistakes. You can also customise your character stats as you look to hone the new abilities and upgrades you'll stumble upon.
