Devlog #3 - Life in an Oasis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULnTaIBz7JY

Life cannot survive on scorched land, making the oases the only temporary safe havens on Earth. Or so it would seem.

As the first rays of sunlight fall onto a silent oasis, the frost begins to melt. Soon after, life begins to stir. Small animals come sniffing, then bigger ones follow, like the savage rupu. Finally, the nomads appear atop their walkers.

Lone nomads arrive first. They travel the global circuit on their walkers, searching for pristine lands with plenty of resources. They move quickly, hoping to score some treasure before larger clans come to lay their claim. Some nomadic groups will settle for longer periods of time, building bases from which to stage raids and hunt the local wildlife.

While there will always be those who insist on travelling alone, the majority of nomads travel in groups. Nomads who stay together can more easily stand up to the threats of rival clans that seek to monopolize resources and trade routes.

The group that reigns over an oasis receives income as a result of all the harvesting and trading that occurs in their territories. So when a clan claims a resource-rich oasis, they will experience a surge of new growth. As a clan grows, new and more ambitious opportunities present themselves that require cooperation and planning. Establishing complex trade routes, protecting an oasis’ borders, providing mercenary services for other nomads, building large war walkers, reshaping the economy – all these objectives require a collective and coordinated effort amongst the clans’ members.

Before an unoccupied or contested oasis can be captured, a claiming walker must be built and deployed by a clan. There will usually be more than one faction vying for control, and they will attempt to sabotage the claiming walkers belonging to rival clans. The last claiming walker left standing in an oasis during a contested period means victory. The Flotilla guarantees the claim for twenty-four hours, after which the oasis becomes contested and susceptible to attack once again.

After some time, the unforgiving sun burns the oasis to the ground and the cycle begins anew.

New Gameplay Video #1: Scavenge

Being a Nomadic Survival MMO, Last Oasis forces its players to be constantly on the move from the impending doom. In their endless run, Nomads travel from oasis to oasis to gather resources necessary to survive, create better Walkers, and empower their clans.

While many resources can be found by simply harvesting them from the ground, some require to climb to great heights with a grappling hook or hunt and fight creatures. However, scavenging is a much more rewarding activity: an unlucky dead Nomad can be a great source of materials and equipment - but you need to be always alert! You never know who's watching you...

This is the first episode of a gameplay video series that will capture the essence of key elements of the game, such as scavenging, crafting, building, combat, and more. Make sure to keep following the page to not miss the next one.

Meet the Last Oasis developers at GIC 2019!

The Game Industry Conference is the most important appointment for every developer of the Polish gaming industry. Needless to say, we will be there again for the third year in a row.

Besides hosting panels, speeches and other business opportunities for hundreds of game developers, GIC happens to be run simultaneously on the same days and venue of PGA, the Poznan Game Arena - the biggest consumer event of the country for gamers.

While at this time we won't be showcasing new content for Last Oasis, our team will have a small booth in the main hall of GIC.

If you happen to be a journalist, a fellow developer, or "simply" a passionate gamer living in Poland, don't miss the chance to visit GIC and meet us at our booth. We will be more than happy to have a chat about Last Oasis with you!

Furthermore, our superb sound designer and composer Michał Korniewicz will be hosting a talk titled "Sounds of wooden giants", which will talk about the sound design of our Walkers through the Unreal Engine 4 procedural audio design. You can find the exact location and time of the speech at this link.
