The battle for the wild wood begins! Root is now available!

After an amazing Early Access, Root is now available on Steam! Thank you so much to everyone who offered feedback, left a review, or just played one of the tens of thousands of games logged during Early Access! Your enthusiasm and support has been fantastic.

With today’s full release on Steam, we’re excited to bring mobile and Steam players together cross-platform for even more epic woodland warfare.

And…tick tock tick tock…what’s that sound? Clockwork Opponents are on the way in the first big update (hopefully next month), with future expansion content to come!

In addition to some of the improvements from our last patch, today’s release includes general stability and match-making improvements, as well as a feature much-requested by the Early Access community, and some more improvements to support cross-platform play:
Quick Battle
You can now choose an option in the settings menu to let you skip the battle scene and conduct all your battle decisions from the Forest, where you can keep an eye on the game state. Quick Battles are cutting edge woodland technology so let us know if you have improvements to offer on this front.

In addition to this, we’ve made a number of tweaks to animation length throughout the game; opponent turns and regular battle should now be snappier in general.

AI Improvement
Improving AI play is a continuous process and we continue making changes to adjust behavior with each release. Some of today’s updates include corrections for errant moves, as well as prioritizing counterplay to whichever player is leading. For now you should see these improvements applied most often and aggressively in higher difficulty matches. Keep the feedback coming!
Coming Soon! – Undo and Action Log
Keep an eye out for MVP versions of these features to be added in the coming weeks.

But now it’s time to enter the fray and let the fur fly. Who will lead to victory?
The ruthless conquering cats who serve the Marquise?
The noble squabbling birds of the Eyrie?
The feisty forest critters of the Woodland Alliance?
Or the mischievous Vagabond, who makes their own path?
The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to you to decide which group will ultimately take root.

Happy gaming!

Root Patch 1.23.1
Patch Notes: 1.23.1
Today's Patch 1.23.1 contains a handful of fixes and improvements to the overall performance and stability. We are still processing a lot of great community feedback, and are continuing to work on many of the adjustments and features have been requested. Today’s update has a few minor quality of life updates, alongside the stability adjustments, but keep an eye out for some of the larger items coming (some will hit after Early Access ends)!

As always, we appreciate your feedback and support as we continue to make Root the best digital experience possible. If you do encounter an issue or need help, please drop us a line at [email protected] so we can see what's up.

And if you're enjoying Root, please take a moment to rate & review the game to help spread the word to other players!

Thanks for playing Root!
New:
• You can review the Discard Pile any time! Open the Supply during a game and press the “Discard” button
  • Marquise de Cat will now have the option to use Field Hospital immediately when warriors are removed from their Keep clearing.
    • This is a first step we are taking to address some of the concerns around the differences between the digital and tabletop experiences of Root. We prioritized this to help prevent griefing the (poor, poor) Cats on some Turn 1 plays. Watch for more updates about an upcoming implementation of a Tabletop option.
  • Previously selected game settings are now saved between games
  • Save Icon has been improved and relocated
  • Alliance players can now see the Supporter cost of a potential Revolt during Birdsong
General:
• Players should no longer be able to get stuck in the second tutorial
  • Evening ambient audio should no longer last forever
  • During games, the chat window should no longer be overlapped by game menu elements
  • Clarification added to rulebook instructions
  • Vagabonds’ special abilities can now be cancelled properly
  • Command Warren can be activated by the Vagabond even if they only have exhausted swords
  • Favor cards no longer remove pieces of a faction in your Coalition
  • Leaderboard layout now fits large numbers
  • Improvements around reconnecting to and resuming saved games and other connectivity issues.
Known Issues:
• Discard Pile does not appear to work in Online Play - this will be fixed ASAP.
  • There is an issue where some cards are playing face up and face down when you expect the opposite. We are still addressing this issue, but have fixed the most egregious cases.
  • We are still experiencing some visual and performance issues on Macs.
  • There are some rogue notifications in rare cases.
  • The discard pile menu does not resize properly in all aspect ratios. We’ll fix this soon, but in the meantime resizing the game via Settings should help.
  • We are still investigating reports of players occasionally not being able to play cards, or being locked out of a game mode temporarily.
  • Though we are making improvements to the AI, in this update they may still occasionally move between clearings in a silly manner.
  • The settings menu looks off-center -- don’t worry, we’re adding things here soon!

Root Early Access Update 9/4

The first couple of weeks of Early Access have been great -- thank you so much to those of you who've provided feedback, either directly or here in the Steam forums. From a look around the forest, it seems like you all are enjoying playing Root as much as we enjoy making it: You've already put in a combined total of over fifty-two thousand hours of play time!

We're working towards our next milestone of mobile release on iOS and Android phones and tablets, which is on track for Thursday, September 24! So keep an eye out for some new mobile friends to be joining the woodland for cross-platform warfare fun!

Additionally, as we move forward in Early Access, here's what we're working on:

  • Expansion support! Tick tock...Clockwork opponents are on the way!
  • Our biggest focus has been on bugs, but we’re also working on implementation of some of the most common feedback we’re seeing:
    • Discard Pile view
    • Action Log
    • Options for shorter battle animations
    • AI Improvements
    • 1st player marker during setup
  • Regarding the Field Hospital and other feedback around perfectly matching tabletop play, we are reviewing and looking into solutions. We try to balance game flow and pace with perfect accuracy, but we believe we can provide some options to players who want better fidelity.

The team couldn’t be more delighted by the passion and reception that Root has seen so far, and we’ve been devouring all of your feedback. We'll be back with another update as we get ready for the mobile release later this month. In the meantime, thank you so much for your feedback & your support!

If you haven't done so, please consider taking a moment to rate and review the game to help other players discover their new favorite digital board game!

Thanks for playing Root!
