Multiplayer Public Beta Update: Version 1.4.16 - Full Launch on August 22nd!

This update for the Multiplayer Public Beta includes new features and bug fixes for problems reported by you, the players. Thanks for sending in your feedback, it's an essential part of getting multiplayer ready for everyone.

On August 22nd, online multiplayer will be fully launched on Steam, iOS, and Android. Mark your calendars and get ready!

The Powers Long Forgotten scenario is now playable in multiplayer, and works properly with fine-grained Spirit Phase undo. To activate Spirit benefits in multiplayer, click the scenario button in the bottom right and vote to Use a benefit. Once enough players agree, the benefit will be used. (Note: the Loop of Twisted Bronze benefit can be used by any player without voting).

The Invite button on the multiplayer setup screen now copies a link you can share with friends to invite them to the game. When they open the link and click to play, Steam will launch Spirit Island and they will automatically join your game.

Various other fixes and improvements are in this update, notably:
  • When another player is forgetting a power card (due to gaining a major power), other players must wait for them to decide. Now, a message will be shown to you so it's clear what is happening.
  • Fixed a problem interaction with Blazing Renewal and Heart of the Wildfire.
  • Fixed some issues relating to event cost payments.
  • The Ritual of Terror scenario now works properly again in online multiplayer.
  • Improved the shrinking/growing behavior of island pieces when in crowded lands.
  • Fixed a few issues relating to undo.

We are continuing to work on various areas to streamline multiplayer gameplay by reducing voting and allowing simultaneous choices for different players, where possible. If you see a specific problem, please report it in-game when you see it and we can look into it. That will be more helpful to us than general requests for streamlining.

Keep track of our development progress on the public beta Trello board. Please note that several items are still in development and are not yet available:
  • Powers Long Forgotten scenario is not yet playable in multiplayer
  • In-game invites via URL/Discord
  • While forgetting a Power card during the Spirit Phase, other players are temporarily blocked from taking actions.


This update fixes a problem where a "requesting undo file" popup could appear and interrupt the game during multiplayer.

Three scenarios from Branch & Claw are now playable in multiplayer:

Ward the Shores and Rituals of the Destroying Flame have been updated to use a new button on your Spirit summary panel. Use this button to play a Power card face-down as a Warding Pattern or to add a Flame Marker at the appropriate times.



Second Wave can be played from the end of game screen if all players in the game agree. As in single-player, it will proceed through additional end-game steps before allowing you to choose new Spirits and proceed to the next game.

We are continuing to work on various areas to streamline multiplayer gameplay by reducing voting and allowing simultaneous choices for different players, where possible. If you see a specific problem, please report it in-game when you see it and we can look into it. That will be more helpful to us than general requests for streamlining.

Other notable improvements & fixes in this update:
  • The Finish Using Powers button will only appear in multiplayer if you still have powers to use.
  • Voting for the Full Resync option will now show an indicator for the other players to join you.
  • When selecting a Spirit for some action, if there's a land associated with the decision, it will be highlighted.
  • When selecting multiple Spirits and the order may not matter, a Choose For Me button is now available.
  • Fixed some problems with the Branch & Claw toggle options in the New Game screen in multiplayer.
  • While pieces are being moved during the Spirit Phase, other players are no longer blocked from taking actions.
  • Fixed a problem where the game could get stuck in certain Spirit Phase situations with Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds and Heart of the Wildfire.
  • Fixed an issue with Spirit summary panel information disappearing in some cases.
  • Fixed various problems with undo getting players out of sync with one another.
  • Fixed undo issues related to Events and Blight cards.
  • Fixed some edge cases with Second Wave and Sweden.
  • Fixed an issue with alternate loss conditions resulting in the game displaying a Sacrifice Victory in some cases.

Notable fixes in this update:
  • Fixed a problem where the game could get stuck in certain Spirit Phase situations with Ocean's Hungry Grasp.
  • Fixed a crash with using undo and Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island.
  • Fixed an issue where undo could result in an incorrect game state with Thunderspeaker while the island is being blighted.
  • Fixed a disappearing animation when revealing a fear card using Spirits May Yet Dream.

The Spirit Leader can now reassign Spirits to players during the game at any time. Click the multiplayer status button at the bottom left, then the "Reassign Spirits" button. Drag and drop player tags to Spirit panels to reassign them (similar to when a player disconnects).

Other notable fixes and improvements in this update:
  • The game will no longer get stuck in certain cases when losing to France's additional loss condition.
  • Player tags are now shown on other Spirits when you are focused on a single Spirit in multiplayer.
  • Fixed a rare case where the island map could disappear in multiplayer.
  • Various panels will no longer be dimmed out when you're trying to access them at certain times.
  • The text chat window can now be more easily moved by dragging from its top.
  • Quick Play & joining a game in multiplayer mode can now randomly choose expansion Spirits in addition to core game Spirits.
  • Improved the accessibility and behavior of Command Beasts in multiplayer (particularly when focused on a single Spirit).
  • Improved the multiplayer user experience of performing the Ritual of Terror.
  • In multiplayer, one player skipping an optional Fear card effect no longer skips it for everyone else.
  • Event card Blighted Island effects such as The Center Crumbles have an improved multiplayer user experience.
  • The Sacred Sites Under Threat and Urbanization events now support Choose For Me.
  • The Presence removal decision on Absorb Essence is now made by the target Spirit, not Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island.
  • When choosing an effect on a card that affects a land, the land will now be highlighted (e.g. during Sacred Sites Under Threat).
  • More improvements relating to Spirit phase undo have been made to avoid incorrect behavior with certain sequences of actions.
  • When multiple Invader cards are in a slot, their order is now properly preserved when they advance to the next slot.
  • Fixed problems with build logic that could cause Disease to get used up when Invaders should be prevented from building in a land.
  • The growth actions on Ocean's Hungry Grasp that push/gather Presence will no longer prompt about empty lands.
  • Fixed a problem interaction between the Beasts Attack event and Dahan Insurrection.
