Mayan warriors: we listened to your feedback

Yesterday we presented our Mayan warriors. According to some members of our family/community, the warriors were lacking prominent indigenous features.

We listened to your feedback and decided to make modifications and show them to you. We've always stressed the importance of receiving comments, opinions and support from our community and you never fail us!

Nevertheless, It is important to understand that the concept art we upload is a collection of references designed for our 3D team. In many cases, we use generic models to show the textures and materials to the modeling team.

We take the liberty to upload the progress of our development process, something that most studios do not do, since Mictlan is a Kickstarter project and we want to maintain a transparent and honest relationship with you all.

It is also important to note that everything we upload to our social media is a WIP. The final product, when Mictlan will be published in 2025, will be possible totally different.

Finally, we can't stress enough how important is your support along the way. Everything we make and will make, is possible also because of you!

Keep following up, keep supporting Mictlan!

Mayan warriors: concept art

Today we present to you our latest WIP of the Mayan warriors that you will find in the setting of Tulum.
For their creation we took inspiration from elements of the Late Classic (such as the Lubaantun and Peru-Waka boxers), the Terminal Classic (with the influence of Chichen Itza on the shields) and, of course, the Postclassic and the Colony (with the codices, Tulum murals, Santa Rita Corozal and the book by Fray Diego de Landa).

The Mayans feature new elements in their arsenal, such as combat mittens and batons, in addition to the reinforced bandage armor described in the historical-geographical chronicles.

Be prepared to face the lethal arts of the warriors of the south in Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale.

We are launching our Kickstarter campaign, with a minimum of 20K backers (have you registered yet? It only takes a minute!)

Tlazolteotl

Tlazolteotl (originally a deity of Huasteco origin) found a relevant place among the Mexica deities. She represented the different forms of passion, and that is why she was the goddess of fertility and births.

Her help was sought as a goddess of carnal love, but it could cause unbridled sexual appetites. She protected midwives and pregnant women, and her image was placed at the entrance of the temazcales where she was called “Grandmother of temazcal”.

She was related to the goddess Toci, the mother of the gods, also known as "Heart of the earth" or "Entrails of the earth" because she fostered life and cared for her children (gods, men, animals or plants).

Tlazolteotl was also know as "Eater of filth" since she had the ability to purify the bodies of sexual offenders if they performed acts of confession and sacrifice. As a matter of fact, Tlazoteotl is often depicted with her mouth and chin darkened from consuming filth and sins.

Wisdom of Our Elders

Today we are showing you a concept art for an older healer you will encounter in Mictlan.

The wise elders will have more ingredients available and maybe more potions and recipes to craft. In this design, we rely on a fantasy look, equipping them with a staff that they use to invoke magical powers in some special rituals, asking for the gods' intervention. For example, a ritual for Tlaloc to summon a hailstorm, or a ritual for Huehueteotl to summon a rain of fire.

This design is still a WIP, but you know what to expect in Mictlan: you'll have to find these elder healers and uncover their secrets.

The oral tradition is very important for the Mesoamerican cultures. The elders are the keepers of history, and their word is respected and honored.

In this other piece of concept art, you can see an elder telling all sorts of stories. He bears battle scars as if he is carrying the weight of war and history on his shoulders while hiding the truth behind his penetrating eyes.

In Mictlan you’ll have to seek these characters to get information about the myths and ancient traditions, maybe to find a special temple or to summon a deity.
