Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is a faithful remaster of a janky '90s FPS, for better and worse

Rise of the Triad's a weird mutant of a game, a labor of love that was released in the wake of both Doom and Doom 2 that compensated for its janky, Frankenstein-ed Wolfenstein 3D engine with an edgy, '90s character. What I mean is this game is some goddamn nonsense, and that same cranked-to-11 mentality is still faithfully preserved in this remaster by Nightdive Studios—it's just a shame that a lot of the nonsense can be as frustrating as it is entertaining...

The Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition remaster has an optional HUD with a Doom-style ouch face

In case you missed it, there's a 4K remaster of Rise of the Triad, the cult first-person shooter where you first-person shoot cultists, due out this year. It's a collaboration between Apogee Entertainment, Nightdive Studios, and New Blood Interactive, who recently shared some extra details on how they're updating this classic...

The Rise of the 'Retro FPS' and Updating a Classic
Members of the HUNT, we bring news from the front.
It's been a priest porridge ːPorridgeː HOT minute since we first revealed Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition at Realms Deep 2022. And we've been busy.

But we've only been busy because the Retro FPS community at large has been even busier.

Night Dive, New Blood and Apogee wouldn't even be here if the events of the last 10 years hadn't led us to this point.

So join us as we take a trip down memory lane during our 'Rise of the Retro FPS' panel we put on at PAX East a few weeks ago - and we'll talk after...

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
So yeah, it's taken us all a while to get to this point, but the good news is - there is nobody better to be making this remaster of THE Cult Classic FPS. Now let's get into what we've been working on:
A BRAND NEW and IMPROVED level editor.
It's as easy to use as we can possibly make it and features a ton of unused textures and items!
And it WILL ship with Steam Workshop Support.

We've also added MAP PREVIEWS and added back in the Rejected Maps!

ːTriadː Hooray for working ROTT multiplayer in 2023! ːTriadː
But more importantly...
We've been hard at work restoring the cut characters... pixel by pixel.
These (optional) alternate versions of the characters will swap randomly depending on how much you want to see them, including enemies placed with the new editor, vastly increasing enemy visual variety!

You can see some of them in action in this 4K screenshot from our new episode "The HUNT Continues"

(and yes we'll be making sure they all have proper voice acting)

That's right, don't forget we're creating an ALL NEW ROTT EPISODE with our new level editor.

Made by developers from Night Dive, New Blood, the original Apogee, the DOOM mapping community and whoever else was crazy enough to join us!

And did you notice anything about that screenshot? Perhaps a NEW HUD? With a NEW FACE on it?!

Yeah, it's a shame that ROTT has been called a "DOOM clone" all these years but never even got a proper DOOM style HUD. So we're fixing that (optionally) with all new player faces and HUDs.

(With wide stretch and faceless options, of course!) (right click and open each of these in a new tab)
Especially when you have 5 playable characters to choose from ːLoreleiː

We think it adds a lot of personality to the game.

Nod your head while reading this if you agree.
Like all of you, we just really want to do ROTT justice and give it the remaster it deserves.

That being said...
WE ASSUME YOU ALSO PROBABLY WANT TO PLAY IT?!
Good, becase we're happy to announce that RISE OF THE TRIAD: LUDICROUS EDITION will have a SHAREWARE DEMO releasing during STEAM NEXT FEST on June 19th.

(AND IT WON'T BE TIMED)

The demo will feature levels from The HUNT Begins, Dark War, Extreme ROTT and our new episode 'The Hunt Continues' plus will have all the new features you see here! (maybe)

Wow, we sure have said a lot here today - but as El Oscuro said:
