Storm & Rain Effects In Forever Skies

Greetings Scientists,

We’re taking a short break from showcasing tools this week. We at Far From Home are busy preparing something very special for you all. Keep your eyes out for that and the Repair Tool deep dive coming soon.

But, we couldn’t let you go without any content at all. So behold, we prepared a short video clip of storm & rain effects in the game. Leave the video a like, subscribe to our official YouTube channel and make we hope you enjoy! (Watch with headphones if possible.)

Storms and rain play an important role in the world above the dust.

Whilst thunderstorms can be dangerous both to you and your airship, the water is essential to your survival!

As soon as you’re able, you will want to 3D print yourself some Water Collectors. These devices can be dotted around your aiships exterior, to gather up as much rain as possible!

You’re probably thinking that once you’ve collected water, you’re good to go and grab a straw huh? WRONG! Drinking water directly from rain clouds is bad…very bad for your health. Earth is no longer hospitable to humanity after all. (Or you could drink it and see what happens?)

From here, water needs to be collected up and placed in a Water Purifier.

This process does take some time. But once finished, you will have completely clean and fresh water to drink!

Now that you have your water system in place on your airship, you will be looking forward to the next spot of rain!

What are your thoughts? Do you like the weather effects? Are you going to risk drinking unfiltered rainwater? Let us know and leave a like!

A Closer Look At The Build Tool

Another week, another tool for you to feast your eyes on!

We took a look at the Build Tool back in February:

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1641960/view/4513171669140439463) but there have been a few improvements made to the tool since then!

The in-game description: “Constructs airship hull modules and allows restructuring of balloon capabilities. Once, when humans still dreamed of conquering space, the build tool was to help erect new structures on other celestial bodies. With time its design was repurposed as a portable airship factory. Requires raw resources to build anything.”

The tools two functions, build and dismantle, are indicated visually on the tool itself. Animated and with blue lighting for the build function and static with yellow lighting for the dismantle function. You can switch between the two functions at the touch of a button. The materials you use to create come directly from the player's inventory. Likewise, anything you dismantle returns back to your inventory.

It's important to note that the build tool works exclusively with airship components. In other words, the dismantle function doesn’t work like an extractor. You won’t be able to use it to collect resources around the world as such like you can with the Extractor Tool.

You might recall seeing the Build Tool’s UI back in March when we revealed our Extended Gameplay Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlSYf0M-1Lc&t=1s We have improved upon its design since then. Individual models are now easier to locate as all components are separated into categories:

- Rooms
- Walls
- External Modules
- Balloon

Only basic modules will be available from the start of the game. The more blueprints you find and analyse, the more modules you will be able to create.

The Rooms category houses your types of block modules. When built, each wall will be covered by a very basic tarp layer, which provides the smallest amount of protection from the outside world. This is where you will need the Walls category. In here you will find doors, standard walls, windows, floors and more. External modules you’re likely to find catwalks and railings. Then finally, the balloon…

Depending on how many balloons you have attached to your airship and their individual size, determines your base's total weight capacity. As you can see in the top right of the GIF above, our ship loads at its maximum capacity. This means we’re unable to expand our base any further.

This means it's time to upgrade our base and give ourselves a foundation to continue to build on. By adding a second balloon and increasing each balloon's size, we increase our total capacity meaning we can expand our base even further!

What did you think of the Build Tool? We can’t wait to see what you guys create with it! Don’t forget to leave this post a like and share it around :)

Finally, thank you to game-icons.net for your free-to-use icons used in some of these assets.

Extractor Tools

Greetings lone scientists!

As we touched upon last week, our next handful of posts are going to be focused on a selection of the tools that will be available to the player during your time with Forever Skies.

The first tool that we’ll place under the microscope is the Extractor. Here is it’s in-game description:

“Extracts raw resources from objects remains of mostly homogeneous compositions. Designed to recycle the trash from the environment. Unfortunately, it was a “too late” response to a big problem. It has a short operating range, but you can take it everywhere.”

The Extractors primary function is to breakdown raw materials like metals, glass, synthetic material and more to a molecular level. These materials can then be repurposed into parts needed for your airship and equipment.

Another of its functions is for creating new paths and routes through areas, both above and below the dust. We won’t be showing you anything under the dust just yet, but here you can see the mechanic in action.

This is useful, especially when you’re in a hurry to find vital resources to survive or find new quicker pathways through areas. Not every item/structure can be extracted in Forever Skies. The tool works only on materials that were 3D printed, a technique that was used widely in construction before humanity escaped the surface.

However, the Extractor isn’t the only form of this tool in Forever Skies. Introducing the Heavy Extractor!

While the regular Extractor is useful when exploring locations, its drawback is its short operating range. However, the Heavy Extractor variant doesn’t have this problem. It's incredibly satisfying to set a course on your airship and collect resources with the Heavy Extractor as you fly through ruined skies.

Or why not bring some friends along? You can install as many Heavy Extractors as you wish. Get one of them to steer the airship, while the rest of you zap valuable resources out of the sky!

What are your thoughts on the Extractor variants? Which is your favourite? Be sure to let us know in the comments! We hope you enjoyed this look at the Extractor tools!

The Tools of Forever Skies

An important feature in survival games is having a good variety of useful tools available to the player. Throughout May we will cover a few of the tools at your disposal in Forever Skies.

The Extractor Tool:

The Build Tool:

The Repair Tool:

These are only three tools from a wider variety that will be available to you when you play, but let's keep some of them a surprise for now ;)

We’ll take a look at each tool in more depth over the following weeks, complete with concept art of course!

Which tools design is your favourite? Any feedback? Be sure to let us know!

Game Informer Interview - Lets Talk Forever Skies!

Hello to our awesome community!
Last week, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Game Informer to talk all things Forever Skies.

Gameplay Lead Andrzej Blumenfeld and Brand Manager Pawel Jawor discussed among other things, the world of Forever Skies, its different biomes, the games influences our plans for Early Access and beyond.

Probably one of the most important topics discussed, is our original motivation for creating Forever Skies in the first place and how they're based off very real issues happening around the world, but especially in some of the largest Polish cities like Krakow and Warsaw.
...we receive messages on the phone that say, ‘if you can, Please stay at home because going outside is dangerous.' The air is like poison…and this was one of the many things that we were like, ‘yeah, maybe this is a good topic to speak about.’”
- Andrzej Blumendfeld on the reasons for creating Forever Skies.

You can find the full article right here - https://www.gameinformer.com/2022/04/26/forever-skies-why-far-from-home-is-using-early-access-to-develop-its-first-person-post

In addition, we also had the opportunity to discuss the players airship in some more detail and shared an exclusive new screenshot with them:

Thats right....

Two. Balloons.

The more weight you add to your airship as you continue to expand the base, the harder it will be to fly, drastically reducing your movement. The best way to counter this problem is by adding more air! You can simply increase the size of your balloon sure, but why not just add a whole other balloon instead?

If you want a giant airship base, this is the best way to do it!

Your thoughts? Let us know in the comments and don't forget to like this post!
