Chilly DevLogs from Alaska ! #25

Welcome to twenty-fifth DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

In today's devlog:
- 3D environment!

Yeah, just that JUST. But it's important!

Challenge!

Working on the 3D terrain in Alaska Gold Fever is an exciting and challenging aspect of the game development process.
The terrain is a crucial element of the game (i think every game), as it provide the backdrop for players to explore and mine for gold.

References are important!

One of the books used for references

The first step in creating the 3D terrain was to gather reference materials. We spent a lot of time researching the Alaskan landscape, looking at photos and videos of the rugged terrain, mountains, and rivers. This helped us to get a better understanding of the terrain and the features we wanted to incorporate into the game.

Know your tools!

Next, we began creating the 3D models of the terrain using software like Unity3D and Blender. We started by creating a base mesh of the terrain, which included the mountains, rivers, and other geographic features. Once the base mesh was complete, we added textures to give the terrain more depth and realism.

Real or realistic?!

Creating the textures is a time-consuming process.
We spent a lot of time creating custom textures for the different elements of the terrain, such as rocks, snow, and trees (and also some things in town like wood, buildings etc).
The textures needed to be high-quality and realistic to give the players an immersive experience.

Hills have eyes?

Once the 3D terrain was complete, we began to incorporate it into the game. We added features like hills and valleys to create a more realistic environment for players to explore.

We also added dynamic lighting to create a more immersive experience, with the terrain changing in appearance based on the time of day. (you can see that in some of the previous devlogs)

Nightmare for every game dev!

One of the challenges of working on the 3D terrain was optimizing it for performance. The terrain needed to be visually stunning while also running smoothly on a variety of hardware. This required balancing the level of detail with the performance of the game. It's a hard quest and a lot of developers struggle with it , especially if a game is coming to PC and multiple consoles at the same time.

it's still fun!

Overall, working on the 3D terrain in Alaska Gold Fever is an exciting but challenging experience.
It require a lot of research, creativity, and technical expertise to create a realistic and immersive environment for players to explore!

Chilly DevLogs from Alaska ! #24

Welcome to twenty-fourth DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

In today's devlog:

-Weapons of Mass Destruction!!! Jk - just a few tools to protect yourself in the Alaskan wilderness
-Some nice views.
-And an old man sitting on a chair (really!)

You have my bow!

Our 3D artist said, "This mahogany bow will be your best friend in times of hunger"
No idea where he got that from, but he's right :D the most reliable source for shooting - a bow!!!
Sure you can also throw stones or even spears (pointed sticks), but a bow has higher accuracy and efficiency!

You can use it to protect yourself from wild animals or from predators!
Also, it is not a rapid fire weapon... so it works well when there are only 1-2 targets

You have my (cross)bow!

A bow...! but with a trick. Deadly accuracy and more stopping power! Plus, it's expensive! Look at these details :D

it looks good and is heavy, but it can be useful. Also works well when there are 1-2 targets (reloading takes time)

Crossbow WIP

You have my rifle!!!

Now we are talking!! Good accuracy, good range, (relatively) fast shooting compared to earlier "let us call it "archaic" weapons. I saw this term in another game, I think it was Age of Empires III - archers were called "soldiers with archaic weapons" and I started calling them that :D

Good weapon for everything - fighting, hunting and even some psychological effects (scares off wild animals and even people)
A bit expensive, but worth every gold ounce!

Alaska - take me there!

Here I have some screenshots. Looks good, does it not ? ;D Too bad there are only 5 MB, for a better resolution you can search the screens on our Discord server ;)

I always liked more night landscapes. but in broad daylight snow looks sooo good and cosy :D

Old guy sitting in chair!

Thats right! It's him!
He is siiting! In chair! And he is quite old (just look at this epic beard)
What is his role? Probably some quest giver. Or maybe he just sits there and is busy looking old?
Who knows? ;D

Chilly DevLogs from Alaska ! #23

Welcome to twenty-third DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

Devlogs are back ;)
In today's menu: a look at the gold mine, a bag of jewels, a landscape from Skyrim... from Alaska and more!!!
Get ready!
Everyone favourites: DOGS!
The dog sled will play an important role in your journey through Alaska. You'll be able to get around faster and stow items in it. Plus, you'll have company! You can "rent" up to 4 dogs from a dog breeder! These good guys will be happy to help you travel over mountains, forests, etc.!

This is what a single dog looks like when you break it down into its prime factors (don't do this at home!!)
Lots of fur - it's cold in Alaska, isn't it ;)
Fluffy boys - assemble!
Store your goods!
A sneak peek at 3D modeling of a major item - bags.
When there is a main hero in the game, I always wonder how he keeps all these items ?
He doesn't have any bags or backpacks! Is everything in his pockets? ! And how does the sword hang on his back, even without a belt? Magnets? :D

I'm of the opinion that most characters need to carry something for storage, even if it's just a small bag, purse or something similar. You have to keep your loot in something! It doesn't matter if it's 11 shiny pieces of armor or 22 swords (or 10 kg of gold)
Enviroments
So Steam doesn't allow me to upload high resolution gifs ;(

Here is what I can show in the best quality.

Join our Discord or other social medias to see it in higher resolution ;)

This is the river and the forest near the city, I can show you more in the next devlog

Yes, each leaf is rendered separately ;)
We got around 2000 trees in forest, each tree has around 700 leafes soo... yes our graphic artists are loving it :D
Just kidding :D
There are special tools to help with such tasks (in Unity or even in Unreal game engine) so don't worry if you wanna become graphic designer ;)
Gold mine
Remember that old gif from Goldmine?
We kind of improved it (but now it's just a screenshot)
Better lighting and a few other things, oh and also a cart/wagon is now working which I'll show you soon ;)
NEW
Welcome to twenty-second DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

Welcome in Alaska!

Quick! before the night falls! And there will be snow and a blizzard!
Quickly read this devlog!
There is important informations in it ;)
Baba from the shop
The classic "babushka." Remember to always eat everything she puts on your plate! (She does not know the term "full").
I like these animations "from concept to 3D model"
You can see the amazing work of our 2D and 3D artists!
"Night" City
Wake up adventurers, we have gold to dig ;)
Actually, most of the buildings are already finished, but here are some replacements.
First you need to model a terrain and then plan which building belongs where.
It's best to do this with simple models that you can replace later.
Visit some buildings!
Every building have some role to fulfill in Alaska Gold Fever.
So every interior is important ;)
Here you can see some funny glitch that happens in develiping a door :D
I can tell in super secret that most videogames developers hates doors. Also elevators, stairs, and mirrors :D You won't believe how hard is sometimes to do them in game ! :D
The forest beast! (AKA Forest Demon)
Still WIP but in next devlog i gonna show you a 3D modeled BEAST from the FOREST!
First Night City and then a Witcher? :D
A lot of references in this one devlog! :D
