Devlog From Behind The Bars #25 - Props & Objects

Hello Prisoners!

Stand up! Be quiet! Your fav CO is speaking! ;)

Welcome back to another devlog for Prison Survival!

This devlog is all about the 3D objects you see around the prison. You might not notice them at first, but they were carefully crafted so you can notice them… and then immediately ignore them while running from guards.

The Steel Locker

It started in Blender as a cube. Then as another cube and then finally as a slightly shaped cube.

We used classic box modeling, adding cuts, bevels, and details until it looked like something that could actually exist in a prison and not in a sci-fi movie.

Industrial Lamps

The lamps hanging above the platforms were designed to look "industrial".

They serve another purpose except lighting: players can hop on them and move away from threats.

Once props survive Blender, they’re sent into Unity.
You may not think daily about the random locker or other small objects in games.
But the designers thinks about them FOR you ;)
All this to make a gaming world a better world!

Devlog From Behind The Bars #24 - Meet the Gym Guy

Hello Prisoners!

Stand up! Be quiet! Your fav CO is speaking! ;)

Welcome back to another devlog for Prison Survival!

Every great prison needs a legend.
Ours started as “that guy who teaches you parkour in playtest” and ended up becoming the "Gym Guy", the most shredded inmate in Prison Survival.

This is his story.

🏃 The Parkour Era

During early playtests, we needed someone to teach players parkour.
So we created one prisoner NPC and told him: “Teach a players some moves”

In the full game, he now lives in the prison gym, where he helps you train, improve stats, and probably judges your form silently.
He doesn’t talk much.
He doesn’t need to.

🧍‍♂️ Built Different (Literally)

Same guy. New job. Bigger muscles.
He just stands there, flexing menacingly.

We made him in Blender, starting from a normal human body… and then accidentally pressing scale one too many times ;)

Also his head needed some sinister tattoos.

Awaken, my master!

He started as a tutorial NPC.
Now he’s a symbol of prison self-improvement!
Players can go to Prison gym to improve your stats!

Building the Prison Gym

Iron, sweat, and polygons!
The prison gym was built in 3D, mostly in Blender, using the advanced sculpting techniques.

Devlog From Behind The Bars #23 - Characters and their funny stuff

Hello Prisoners!

Stand up! Be quiet! Your fav CO is speaking! ;)

Welcome back to another devlog for Prison Survival!

This week’s devlog is all about characters and funny stuff that we can make with them! Let’s begin.

🧑‍🎨 Making Characters in Blender - The Land of Infinite Undo

So, character creation starts in Blender, where we sculpt humans who are supposed to look normal.
Supposed to.

👗 Clothing System

We’re working on clothes too!
We model them in 3D, slap them onto the characters, and hope they don’t explode out of the mesh like they’re possessed.

🦴 Bones in Unity - Welcome to the BONE ZONE

Once our characters survive Blender, we bring them into Unity.
This is where we set up their bones - the skeletal structure that makes them move more like humans.
Ye, you can make atrocities too! For example mix human with other objects.

🧍‍♂️ Pose Testing

We test poses to make sure everything works.
This usually results in: T-poses (the ultimate dominance move), Arms clipping through chests , Legs suddenly dancing,
or this one pose from "memes":

Devlog From Behind The Bars #22 - Ai and other tech stuff...

Hello Prisoners!

Stand up! Be quiet! Your fav CO is speaking! ;)

Welcome back to another devlog for Prison Survival!

Welcome back! Today we’ve got Addressables, experimental AI, and NPCs doing whatever they want (as always). Let’s dive in.

🎒 Addressables in Unity - AKA “Why Your Game Doesn’t Melt Your GPU

We finally added Addressables! 🎉
For the non-nerds: Addressables help us load only the stuff the player actually sees.

So if you’re staring at a wall (as many of you do), the game won’t bother loading the pack of angry guards behind you. They only materialize when you turn around, like badly timed horror jumpscares.

This means fewer memory issues, smoother gameplay, and less crying from our programmer.
Its actually in a lot of games... but no one will tell you this and how exactly they work in their projects ;)

🤖 AI Experiments

We started testing the AI on a giant green-orange testing plane.

We reused some cowboys from another one of our games ;). Watching them patrol a prison yard in cowboy boots was… surprisingly majestic.
We will not be adding cowboy inmates. Probably.

Guard AI - Smarter, Meaner, Still Sometimes Gets Stuck on Doors

The guard AI has evolved!
Patrol areas like they actually care.
Investigate suspicious noises.
Pretend to be smart until they run into each other and get confused.

One guard walked into a wall for 32 seconds before giving up and going on break. Truly realistic behavior.

Devlog From Behind The Bars #21 - From Bars to Vents

Hello Prisoners!

Stand up! Be quiet! Your fav CO is speaking! ;)

Welcome back to another devlog for Prison Survival!
Today we’re crawling through the vents (literally) to talk about one of the most exciting - and risky -parts of prison life: sneaking around when you’re not supposed to.

🕳️ The Vent Life

Every good prison story needs a bit of air circulation and a lot of bad ideas.
That’s why we’ve added vent systems that players can actually use to sneak between areas.
They’re tight, dark, and claustrophobic - perfect for late-night adventures or desperate escapes.

🌙 Night Moves

But watch out: vents creak, metal echoes, and some guards have ears sharper than your courage.
When the lights go out, the prison changes.
Patrols tighten up, cameras sweep slower, and if you’re smart (and quiet), you might just find paths you’d never see during the day.

👮 The Snitches & The Watchers

You can slip out to steal, explore, or meet up with other inmates who don’t exactly follow “lights out” rules. Of course… if you get caught, let’s just say morning roll call will be awkward.

🌒 “Shh… Don’t Wake the Guards”

Vents aren’t your only problem - snitches exist, and they love to talk. Some inmates will sell your secrets for a candy bar or an extra smoke. Others might cover for you… for a price.
