METAL SUITS, Basic game objects

On the planets invaded and conquered by the Golidas tribes, there are various objects from Golida tribes. Objects are divided into unbreakable objects, breakable objects, and explodable objects.

1. Unbreakable Objects

- Iron Box : It's an iron box used by the Golida tribes. We don't know what the contents are, but it's a heavy box. It is never broken by any attack, but instead can be pushed left and right. Gollida and Kevin will die immediately if an iron box crushes them, so you should avoid it when you see a dropping iron box.

2. Breakable Objects

(1) Wood Box : We don't know why the Golida tribes use wood boxes, but they can be broken by hitting or dropping them. If you push it and drop it on enemies, the wood box will break and enemies hit by the wood box will be stunned for a while.

(2) Empty energy box : A box with an empty energy section that can be broken by hitting or dropping it. Gollida and Kevin will die immediately if an empty energy box crushes them and the box will be broken, so you should avoid it when you see a dropping empty energy box.

(3) Item box : Item boxes can be hit and broken and cannot be moved. Breaking item boxes will summon suit repair kits, special weapon refill kits, and an extra life item.
- Suit Repair Kit: Refills suit energy to 100%.
- Special Weapon Refill Kit: Refills the maximum number of suit special weapons.
- Extra Life: You can add 1 extra life to Kevin's base life. It doesn't come out well.

(4) Suit box: Can be hit and destroyed and cannot be moved. When you destroy it, various suits item come out randomly.

(5) Warp machine : There is a warp machine at the end of the stage. You can hit it to break it, but you can't move it. If you hit it, it gradually breaks, and when it is completely broken, a warp machine appears that allows you to move to the next stage or airship.

3. Explodable objects

- Energy Box : Energy Boxes will explode on impact (damage) by being hit or dropping down. The stronger the impact, the shorter the time it takes to explode. If you push it and drop it on the enemy, the basic Golidas will be crushed and die immediately, and the energy box will explode.

- Drill Pod : If you push a standing drill, it will rotate 90 degrees and fall over. If you hit or damage the energy body section below, it fires in the direction of the drill and explodes after a certain amount of time. The stronger the impact, the shorter the explosion time. If you touch the drill while wearing the suit, the suit will break at once, and if you do not have the suit, you will die at once. Be careful.

- Air Mine : An electrified spiky aerial mine that is securely fastened to a chain. If you collide with a mine wearing a suit, you will take damage, and if you are Kevin, you will die immediately when you collide, so be careful when you look at the air mine. When the chain is broken, it rises like a balloon and explodes when it collides with a wall or after a certain amount of time.

4. The rest objects

- Televator : An elevator made of electromagnetic fields. If you point your cursor upwards inside the televator, Kevin will automatically go up. To descend, simply press the cursor from the top of the televator to the bottom.

- Ladder : It's a very ordinary ladder that you can go down or up. There is a televator made by the Golida, but it is unknown why they even use a ladder.

- Bridge : This is a bridge that Kevin or the Golidas can stand on. It is indestructible and can be moved down by pressing the cursor down on the bridge. If the bottom is empty, you can die as is, so keep an eye on the bottom of your feet before going down.

- Save point : The save point is disabled by default, but is activated when Kevin passes. When Kevin dies, you start at the last active save point.

- Iron door & Lever: As you progress through the game, you will come to a place blocked by an iron door. Unfortunately, the iron door cannot be broken with any weapon. Instead, moving the lever near the iron door (melee attack) will open the iron door, so you should find the lever and open the door.

---------------------------------------

The mentioned objects are basic objects that you will always encounter as you progress through the game. There are special objects or puzzle elements for each chapter, but if you understand the basic objects well, you can use the objects to advance the game in an advantageous way.

In the next post, we will look at the worldview of Metal Suits and the background of Kevin's birth.

METAL SUITS, Basic combat system and 5 basic Golida enemies

1. Main character Kevin

As stated in the previous post, the main character ‘Kevin’ is not a human but a humanoid cyborg. Unlike ordinary soldiers, Kevin has a strong physical ability that never gets tired. He also can transform his body into various attack forms by getting suits item in game. A total of 5 types of suits have been developed at this moment, but the game is being developed with the goal of providing at least 10 types of suits at the time of release.

From the left: Kevin, Bazooka suit, Gatling-gun suit, Machine gun suit, Fire suit, Fist suit

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Kevin can move up and down, left and right, and climb walls. In addition to basic movement, we are providing a total of 4 buttons including jump, basic attack, melee attack, and special attack. Even if you wear a suit, all functions work the same.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Despite possessing powerful attack power and an indefatigable cyborg body, Kevin is unfortunately as weak as a human. He will be killed with one hit, so be careful.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Instead, if Kevin wears a variety of suits, each suit has energy, so even if he gets hit, he consumes suit energy and doesn’t die right away. However, if Kevin use up all the energy of suits, he will transform basic to Kevin, so you should check the remaining energy all the time. By the suits, please note that the basic attack method may change (press and hold, etc.) depending on the suit.

(1) Basic Attack

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Kevin’s primary weapon is a laser pistol, which automatically reloads after 5 shots. Even if 5 shots are not used, it is automatically reloaded after a certain period of time so that the gameplay can be played smoothly.

(2) Melee Attack

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Melee attacks have a short range, but are very powerful. It can also be used to kill enemies, destroy objects, or move the lever to open a closed door.

(3) Special Attack

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Kevin’s special attack is throwing grenades. Hold down the button to see the trajectory, and release the button to throw the grenade to that location. We are preparing various special attacks for each suit, so when introducing each suit, we will explain the special attack separately.

2. Breakable Block

For unknown reasons, there are cracks in some of the buildings and ground blocks where the aliens invaded. Blocks with cracks will break when attacked. You can use it to perform a variety of tactics.

There are various environments and various blocks for each chapter. Knowing which blocks break in each chapter will help you play the game to your advantage.

3. 5 basic Golida enemies

The Golida species are an alien race with one eye. No one knows where they came from, but in an instant, they invaded the Helios system and took over all the planets.

These are the 5 basic Golida enemies, I already introduced in the previous post, and you will see them the most in the game. From left to right: Golida with a laser pistol, Golida with a laser machine gun, Golida with a laser bazooka, Golida with a photon bomb, and Golida with a shield.

Basically, the Golidas have taken over all the planets in Hellios System, so everyone is loosening their wariness. If you attack quickly before enemies notice, you can take them all out before they attack. However, you need to be careful as the Golida that throws the photon bomb has a very wide field of view.

In today’s post, we tried explaining about the basic combat system and the five basic enemies of the Golida tribe. In the next post, I will explain various objects and devices that appear in the game.

Due to the end of the year, the next post will be posted in 4 weeks. Happy Holidays everyone, and Happy New Year!!

METAL SUITS, Redesigning

Through the first demo, the feedback received from acquaintances was more than expected. Among them, the most critical feedback was related to the design.

As you can see in the images above, the graphic quality could have been better, and the identity of the characters and enemies (what are they?) needed to be clarified.

In fact, the reason why it had no choice but to do so is that, while developing for the first demo, we focused on developing the functional part rather than the design part. Because we needed a build that included character, monster, and map editor production, production and application of various in-game functions, production of various directing, and production of sound, we had to pay more attention to the functional part rather than the design identity or quality.

However, because of the strange(?) goal, we were able to show a demo version with the basic functions and 3 stages of the game in 3 months.

At the end of June 2022, a month after the first demo was shown, as a designer and 24-year-experienced game production PD (remunea) joins, Metal Suits begins to face a big change.

There were many design changes, but the biggest change was to give the basic characters and enemies their identities.

The main character ‘Kevin’ had been set up as a masculine soldier, so the sketch was redrawn with a strong soldier male concept, and based on this, the dot work was carried out.

Afterward, like the first concept, it is a soldier concept to save the concept of freely changing and wearing various suits, but it was made in the form of a cyborg with a slightly sleeker appearance.

Various animations were also created based on the created dot image of Kevin.

After the design of the main character, ‘Kevin’, was finalized, we also proceeded with the design of the enemies.

We chose the first one-eyed alien because we had to choose an enemy that wasn’t too famous, not too comical, not too eccentric, and not too familiar.

We named and made stories to the sketched enemy alien, and painted to create the identity of the enemy.

This concept allowed for the creation of various styles of Golida characters equipped with various weapons.

Based on the created sketches, we selected and created 5 basic enemies.

Each enemy has a variety of statuses, and when they find the main character, ‘Kevin’, they will attack him using their own weapons.

Tada~ The main title image was created based on the basic concept of the main character ‘Kevin’ and the enemy ‘Golida’.

In the next post, we will explain the basic combat system and the status of the 5 basic enemies of Golida.

METAL SUITS, the beginning

In February 2022, our team decided to develop a new game, not for mobile, it’s for Console and PC.

At that time, many friends, in the game industry, were worried about us because they thought that developing a Console / PC game needs more people and a budget. At that time, we were just 3 (Game designer, developer, and graphic designer) but we don’t care about it cause we just wanted to develop a really fun game, not a pay-to-win game or advertisement-based time-killing game.

To develop really fun games, I thought of pixel art games like Super Mario, Metal Slug, Ninja Turtles, Mega Man, and Another World. It’s a simple, old-style action and puzzle game, but it’s really fun to play with simple button controls.

After that decision, I was preparing a scenario for a medieval knight, and at the same time, other members were preparing two different prototypes. One was a sword-fighting game and the other was a gun-fighting game.

After testing the two prototypes, we felt that the gun-fighting was much better than we thought, so we decided to develop a game with gun-fighting. After testing, we started developing the basics of a tile-based, side-scrolling action game, but since the art concept hadn’t been decided yet, we weren’t sure how ours would turn out.

So, we made several pixel arts for practice. These are the characters we practiced with. After practicing those characters, we had an idea for the game.

What if, a normal person can get a superpower like Iron Man? That would be awesome because, including me, almost people desire that’s gonna happen.

So we started to develop it. The concept of the game is that a normal person suits up and has a powerful weapon and special ability in various suits and fights against aliens. We designed each suit has unique weapons and special abilities so we called the game “METAL SUITS”.

After 3 months(end of May 2022), we developed the first playable prototype. This version contains only 2 suits.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

In the first playable prototype, we added two types of blocks. One(dark gray) is breakable, and another one(light gray) cannot.

In Broforce, my favorite game, users can destroy all the blocks, but it slows down the game. So we only added destructive blocks to some of them.

Utilizing the structure of the placed blocks, the user can decide how to fight the aliens. Depending on the user’s gameplay style, some users can kill aliens face-to-face by destroying the blocks, others can kill aliens silently like an assassin.

After the first playable version opens to friends, we got many feedbacks from friends. Next post, we will let you know what changed after the first playable build.

Hi, all

Hi, all

This is Eggtart, a game development team in Korea.

The first demo of METAL SUITS was exhibited at BIC 2022 on September 1st and received a lot of user feedback.

We are struggling to develop better games based on users' feedback and our goals.

METAL SUITS started to develop with inspiration from Metal Slug and MegaMan

We will let you know how we are developing our game through Devlogs and we hope that we are going to show you our first demo soon.

The devlogs will be updated every two weeks.

Thank you.
