Unrailed 2: Back on Track News

What to expect of Unrailed 2!
Heya Engineers!
Ahead of release, we wanted to give you some insight into what you can expect from Unrailed 2’s Early Access launch and what is still to come. You can also find a chart with the global release times and a mini AMA further down below!
So what is in the game at Early Access launch?
Biomes: The game offers five biomes in total at launch. Each biome has it's own unique game mechanics and a boss to beat at the end.

Unlockables: On your journey you can find a whole bunch of different kinds of stations to upgrade your train with new wagons or by equipping cartridges to get access to new abilites. And of course there's a bunch of characters and equipment to unlock.

Gamemodes: Next to the endless mode, where you try to build a train track as far as possible, theres also 4v4 versus mode where you can go head-to-head with up to 8 friends and terrain conductor mode that allows you to build and share your own Unrailed levels. This one is the newest addition and there's a lot we can improve still. So let us know what you want to see added!

Local & online multiplayer: As with Unrailed 1 we’ve focused on ensuring you can play all that toghether with your friends both locally and online, with the flexibility to combine these modes. You can have multiple players join locally and connect to an online session hosted by someone who may also have multiple local players.

Singleplayer: If you choose to go for singleplayer mode you can either play alone or with a bot companion along your side. Please note that it's still in an early stage and may not yet fully replace the experience of playing with friends at the start of Early Access.
And what's to come?
First things first: As with Unrailed 1 and the Beta of Unrailed 2 we first and foremost want to work on what you, our community, feels is important. That means we'll first gather your feedback on our Discord server and tackle whatever bugs, gameplay issues or balancing problems you come across (there probably will be a couple 😅). We want to ensure the game is stable and a ton of fun to play before we release major new content updates.

New content: We already have a couple of areas in mind where we want to extend Unrailed 2. These include
 • Biomes and bosses that add replayability and reveal more about the world of Unrailed (and why it's so difficult to build a train with brakes 😉).
 • Engines, wagons, wagon extensions and cartridges that allow you to synergize with your team and specialize your strategy for building train tracks efficiently further.
 • New gamemodes next to the current three. Here we want to experiment with a Time Mode once again or other ideas like a classic mode.
 • More characters and equipment to unlock to stand out among your peers.
 • Achievements!

QoL and balancing updates: While new content is exciting, we'll always try to improve existing systems. This includes:
 • Technical and performance improvements to make sure we can run on as many machines as possible.
 • Rewards for hiking the leaderboards (how about the top players getting a crown to wear?)
 • Key-remapping.
 • Gameplay and visual improvements to make track building even more enjoyable.
 • Extra lobby features (banning, or a quick chat that would complement the current emoji menu...)

But again, these things might change depending on where early access takes us. We'd love to hear what ideas you come up with or where your gripes are. Either for something listed above or something totally different! We're super thankful for all the support and feedback we've already gotten during the closed Beta and open Beta and Demo events we want to continue working like this.
Mini AMA
During the Steam Next Fest we asked on Discord for some of your burning questions, and we have some answers for you.

Will Unrailed 2 support Steam Remote Play?
Yes.

Will the soundtrack be available to purchase?
It will, but sometime after launch. We’ll announce when it’s available across our social channels.

Will progress from demo transfer to Early Access?
Yes.

Will there be game saves in Early Access? If so, will the game save automatically after every station/biome, or something else?
You can create a save game as the host of a session at any time (via menu -> Save and quit to lobby). Note that saves can be loaded only once, similar to U1. However, using the toy engine, you can restart at every station once you crash.

Will people without the full game be able to join a friend that does have the full game if they receive an invite?
We do not have a separate version for that but we support Steam Remote Play which allows anyone to join a friend’s Unrailed 2 session.

Will Unrailed 2 be coming to consoles and will there be cross-play?
We’re currently focusing on bringing Unrailed 2 to Steam for Early Access, and then looking into consoles later on.

Can I join the same lobby as my friends if they live in a different country?
Sure. This might introduce more lag though.

How long will Unrailed 2 be in Early Access?
We cannot give a definite timeline yet as we’ll be collecting feedback from our community to make the game a super fun experience. Our first game, Unrailed! was in Early Access for roughly a year, and we think Unrailed 2 will be similar.

Demo hotfix #4

Hi everyone :)

Once again another (probably last) demo update. We spend a lot of time chasing some crashes that occured primarily in the DX12 backend and we could probably circumvent it now :).

Changelog v-294-c3d3e8a:
- Crash fix: Potential crash fixes related to particle emitters (on DX12)
- Improvement: Improved crash handling
- Improvement: Tree mining models should look clearer
- Improvement: Water supercharge disabled for some wagons (Ghost, Box, Conveyor, Milk, Brake)
- Bug fix: Water supercharge only draining when the wagon is active/working
- Bug fix: Instead of smoke there was already fire (even though the wagon was not burning yet)
- Bug fix: Torpedo and Dynamite wagon crafting resetting when it starts burning

As always make sure to verify files via steam ( https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0C48-FCBD-DA71-93EB ) to make sure you get the patch.

Thanks again for all the feedback and for checking out our demo!

Demo hotfix #3

Hi everyone :)

We just pushed another demo update!

Since we got quite some messages from players trying to start the game with pre Vulkan & DX12 (or pre shader model 6) GPUs, we added the compatibility backend which runs via OpenGL or ANGLE. It's hard to say whether the game runs fast enough on such old hardware but we got it running on our dusty GTX 560. It might even run on those Intel HD 4000 chips, but we have none to test.
The game should try to select the appropriate driver if Vulkan or DX12 are not supported. We improved the detection but it might not always work. In case you're unsure, try to run via the Safe-mode option which automatically defaults to using ANGLE.

Let us know if you can run the game now while it did not start before!

Changelog v-291-087ca37:
- New: OpenGL & ANGLE compatibility renderer support
- Improvement: Shadow improvement
- Improvement: Better wagon/extension/cartridge sampling in versus (avoiding doubles and recent samples)
- Improvement: Better task distribution in versus (avoiding recent tasks)
- Improvement: Loca fixes
- Change: Disable Function keys debug functionalities
- Bug fix: “Q” rendered like “O” in the tutorial for asian fonts
- Bug fix: Questboard task changes after resetting
- Bug fix: Auto-Dropper not dropping mixed stacks (eg from collector)
- Balance: Slightly increased start speed in swamp
- Balance: Each water wagon upgrade gives +8 sec (instead of +5)

Make sure to verify the files before to be on the latest version ( https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0C48-FCBD-DA71-93EB )

TLDR: In case the game didn't run for you before, try with the new update.

Demo hotfix #2

Hi everyone :)

We're still working on many things at the same time but we pushed another demo hotfix already!

Some players had issues with having two players joined at once (with the same controller) and disabling Steam Input helped them. We probably fixed that one - let us know if it helped in your case.
We still have some start-up errors with older GPUs. We're currently investigating whether we can run on those devices or not.
We also tweaked a bit the exposure and brightness and also added a slighter to change brightness and contrast within a certain range. Let us know which exact settings you prefer!

Changelog v-288-b296536:
- Improvement: Improved crash handling
- Improvement: Added brightness/contrast settings
- Imrpovement: Slightly less light exposure
- Crash fix: Crash when picking a carriage wagon in the train
- Bug fix: Potentially fixed steam input (under DirectX)
- Bug fix: Wrong light direction in menu fix
- Bug fix: When deactivating the clouds, there was no night layer

Thanks for playing and for helping us with your feedback!

Demo hotfix

Hey everyone :)!

We're suuper happy that so many joined the demo and we got so much feedback already! 💕
We tried to fix some of the most pressuring issues that came up:

One issues was related to the SteamAPI not initializing. Some players circumvented it by adding "++ --debug" as launch option. This should be fixed with the most recent build.

Some player could not start since they GPU did not support Vulkan or they have driver issues or the GPU is too old.
We added a safe mode for that directly starting to DirectX and allowing players to change their grahpics settings. Once you applied your settings, you have to restart to the normal mode.
You can select the safe mode on start-up.

Changelog v-287-c5591f8:
- Improvement: Better error logging on start-up
- Improvement: Korean language can now be selected in the settings
- Bug fix: Probably fixed the issue that some players had to launch with ++ --debug
- Improvement: Added safe mode starting option to debug driver/graphics-setting issues
- Improvement: Same or colliding tasks should not appear at the same time anymore

Make sure to verify the files before to be on the latest version ( https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0C48-FCBD-DA71-93EB )
Let us know if you still can't run the game or any other issues you encounter!
