[p]Dear passengers, [/p][p]Over the past few weeks, our UI team has been hard at work refining the tech tree experience.
We wanted to remove pain points and streamline navigation of the tree, since our game can be very fast-paced and a Freerailer under fire has no time for browsing menus!
[/p][p]We’re excited to share a new iteration designed to make navigation smoother, clearer, and faster.
The key change is that all potential unlocks will now be displayed on a single screen, removing the need to switch between categories and subcategories. It should feel like a one-stop, one-glance screen for grabbing what you need - and also make it easier for new players to compare their choices before spending points.

[p]Dear Passengers,

Since we're approaching the end of the year, we thought it might be fun to look back at the progress we’ve made with our visual effects, specifically environmental VFX. So, join us in a rare before-and-after look at what Enginefall looks like with and without visual effects…

The Undercarriage


One effect you're bound to encounter when playing Enginefall is the poisonous gas in the undercarriage of the train. Hey, it happens to the best of us!
To enjoy this effect close-up, experienced players know that you'll want to bring a gas mask, one of the most important pieces of equipment to craft early in the game.



For the gas, we're using multiple rendering techniques like volumetrics and sprite particles. Some of them also flow along pieces of geometry. This isn't just meant to look pretty, but also inform the player which way is forward.
If you're ever confused which way is forward when you’re all turned about down there, it's against the flow direction of the gas. You're very much swimming against the toxic current here.

The Airlock



You can take multiple paths while moving through the carriages, but sooner or later you will likely traverse an airlock. We wanted to give this memorable landmark an industrial feeling, with smoke rising from vents and pipes. You’ll also see the dodgy electrical wiring of the train showering players in sparks.

On the lower floors of the airlock you'll even see sparks falling through the walkways of the upper level. One more little detail - did I mention you can also hit the railings with your sledgehammer to strike musical notes? Time to start a Freerailer percussion band?

Coming Up

Finally, as a sneak preview of what's to come, we're currently working on new VFX for all the guns in the game. Over the coming updates you should see the visual fidelity of the gunplay change quite significantly and feel more visceral and grounded.Have fun and keep your eyes peeled - the devil is in the details!
