Development Update #3: Episode 1's Progress and Early Access

Hey everyone, Lina here with another update! 🎴🎆

This one’s gonna be a little different from the previous few, we thought it’d be good to take a more macro view of the project’s progress this time and cover some questions we’ve been getting!

First though, we want to talk a little bit about the Demo Update coming next month.

As mentioned before, a substantial update to the Kumitantei Demo Version is coming very soon, and we’re excited to announce it’s coming February 17th! In it you’ll find the addition of Tsubaki as a Battle Demo opponent (as seen last month), as well as graphical and performance updates and the highly requested introduction of the Scanner in exploration!

We’ll be showing previews of the new Demo content on our Bluesky and YouTube Community pages over the coming weeks, so be sure to follow those!

Right now we estimate that Episode 1’s production is about 30% complete, which is right on pace for us to release it in Q3 2025 as planned! Let’s check out the specifics of our progress:

Our focus currently is completing and polishing Episode 1’s script after finalizing the scenario for it last month. For everyone wondering, doing the Demo Update for February has been to keep us making consistent progress across departments for general things not specific to the plot while we wait for the completed script, it hasn’t been a distraction from working on Episode 1 at all.

As for Episode 1’s release plan, as stated above our planned window is still Q3 of 2025, and with Episode 1 the game will be released into Early Access on Steam. We’re using the Early Access model for our Episodic release phase to ensure clarity of the game not yet being complete, and to encourage players to share their feedback with us while we gradually update and add in the narrative’s six Episodes. During this time, we intend on having the game’s price initially discounted on Steam and increasing with each Episode addition, then exiting Early Access when the game is complete.

You may have noticed from our previous few Backer Updates that we’ve been silent regarding the promised Nintendo Switch port of Kumitantei, and as you might have guessed, we were ourselves waiting for more information about the Nintendo Switch’s successor. With the news now of Nintendo Switch 2’s full backwards compatibility with its predecessor, we’re very excited to be supporting both generations of the system. We intend on releasing the full game on Nintendo Switch (and by extension Nintendo Switch 2) once we’ve left Early Access and officially launch, still intended for Late 2027.

Now that was a whole lot of densely packed information, so we’re gonna end this month’s update with something more mellow... the very first preview OST track of Episode 1 titled “Liminal Morning” and courtesy of Hundotte. It’s a relaxing coffee shop bossa nova-inspired alternative version of Liminal Apathy, which will of course be heard during each in-game morning! Enjoy!

We know this Backer Update was way more of an info dump than a showcase like our previous ones were, but we thought it was important to give you guys a better look behind the curtain and clear up all the concerns regarding releases and rewards. Plus with the holidays and focusing on writing right now there’s not really a ton of flashy spoiler-free stuff to share, so it just kinda worked out to do this now.

You guys have given us so much support, and so we want to be as transparent as possible!

Development Update #2: Events, Demo Update and Music

Hello everyone, Lina here! 🎴🎄

First things first, we'd love to wish you all a Merry Christmas from the whole Mango Factory team!

It's been a roller-coaster of a year for us and we're so honoured having you all along for the ride! That said, we've got plenty of gifts to share with you all, starting with this stunning holiday artwork from our Art Director AlyenGhoul!

With our Absolute Plastic Surgeon's birthday likewise being December 25th, spotlighting her here was an easy choice. Check out all the little details!

Now onto the (slightly) more meaty stuff!

We're very excited to talk about a few digital events we're taking part in over the coming months, starting with Southeast Asia Games Onward 2024!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

As an Indonesia-based studio, we were so honoured to be invited to one of the largest showcases of our region’s upcoming games, and we hope you'll all come check it out! There's additionally a video presentation being hosted on December 29th over on the organizer’s YouTube channel.

Then in February, we'll also be a part of Two and a Half Studios’ event called The Storyteller’s Festival, a big celebration of narrative games and visual novels! More info on that next month, but we'll have something very special for the occasion!

In February 2025, we'll be releasing a content update for the Kumitantei Demo Version to polish it up in line with our standards for Episode 1, including bugfixes, QoL improvements, new features, and what we're revealing today... Tsubaki Inōe as a brand new Battle Demo opponent!

Tsubaki will be bringing her unique Palaeontologist Talent Card, as well as her unique animations and a bunch of never-before-seen character sprites from Episode 1!

Eagle-eyed viewers might also notice the suspiciously-Trial-Grounds-shaped backdrop, could this update even bring a change of scenery for the Battle Demo? Only time will tell, so stay tuned for next month.

As a final surprise for this month, we'd like to share with you a brand new track coming with the Demo Update titled “Nyanus, Your Overseer”, courtesy of our Composer and Audio Director Hundotte. Please enjoy!

To wrap this up, we'd like to again wish our whole community a wonderful holiday season and good tidings for the new year. We're able to keep working on this project we love because of you all, and we'll never ever take that for granted.

We have so much cool stuff in store for 2025 and we genuinely cannot wait to share all of it with all of you, so stay safe and have an Absolute Christmas!

Development Update #1: UI and Social Media

Hey everyone, Lina here!

It's been a whole month already since Episode 1 was successfully funded and our last update, but don't worry, we're not dead yet! We spent the last two weeks of October giving the team a well deserved break, and on November 4th we all got right back to work.

Let's see what's new, shall we?

Graphic design is, genuinely, one of the most difficult parts of creating a game. It takes such a unique blend of artistic and technical skills to create good menus for video games, especially considering how when designed well they go largely unnoticed.

…I say all of that just to preface how GyleToTheRescue, our Motion Graphic Designer, makes it look easy.

These beautifully smooth and stylized Pause Menus hearken back to manga and advertising of the 1980s, making all of the settings and info you'll need easily accessible and visually striking!

We hope you'll all enjoy this eye-candy as we continue pushing forward. Given how much of our current workload is backend or spoilery, we're a little dry on things we can showcase for this month, but hope to have more in a few weeks!

Quite a bit has happened outside the confines of game development in the last few weeks, as I'm sure many of you are aware.

Just to cut to the chase, we're phasing out our activities on Ex-Twitter and have already begun shifting our social media presence to Bluesky.

You can follow us there using the button above, and, we've even prepared a Starter Pack with our dev team + collaborators!

In addition, something we've been asked a lot is how to support us further now with the Kickstarter concluded. Our answer to that is Ko-fi!

For those uninitiated, Ko-fi is a platform very similar to Patreon except way less predatory. It allows us to both take one-time donations and offer recurring monthly Memberships, meaning that if someone wants to help us out, they can in whatever capacity they prefer.

Donations and Memberships on our Ko-fi support our team directly instead of going into Kumitantei’s development, so Kickstarter Backer rewards will not be offered through the platform.

I know we've said this a lot, but we mean it so sincerely: Thank you, everyone, for every ounce of faith and support you've given us. We're so honoured to have such a dedicated and tight-knit community.

As I said, this update is a little light due to the circumstances, but now we're locked in and making sure the next one’s more bountiful. See you then!
