Patch #06 - Kingmaker item balance, RNG challenges reworked

[p]Hello everyone!

This patch focuses on item balance, with Kingmaker in mind.

Since the last update, a few builds have proven far too strong and unfun to play against, looking at you Sanguine morphosis with Crystal mirror, so we’ve addressed those. Liferoot Hammer and Blackbriar Blade now have new effects, Crystal Mirror has been disabled, along with many other adjustments. Some underpowered items received buffs as well, but since we still haven’t reached the stable meta where multiple strategies can thrive that we are looking for, our main priority for now is bringing the overperformers down to a more manageable level.

We’ve also heard your feedback that certain challenges felt overly difficult due to the heavy reliance on RNG. That kind of frustration isn’t fun, so we’ve reworked the biggest offenders.

And for those of you who managed to complete Stone Cold before the rework, you know who you are. 😉

Leave a Steam Review: Help Shape the Next Patch!

While we are on the subject of feedback, Steam reviews help a lot. They give other players a clear picture of how the game feels right now, they influence visibility on Steam, and they tell us what to focus on next. If you have a moment after trying this patch, a short, honest review would be genuinely helpful. We read them.

We had more things planned for this patch, but felt the meta was in a state that needed change sooner rather than later. What we're working on for next time is being able to save and continue runs between sessions and general kingmaker connection issues.

Bugfix - Banish items with controller

Quick bugfix for:
 • Bugfix for banishing items with controller
 • Bugfix for champion replay random items giving different outcomes

Patch #05 - Item Banishes, Droprate Tuning, Battle Step Mode

Hello, this patch introduces the ability to banish items during a run and updates the logic for which items drop, among other fixes. Thank you for taking the time to leave Steam reviews, as we do read through them all to see what you'd like added, adjusted, changed, and for what we should prioritize in patches.

Banishes:
Banishes can be used in treasure chests and heroes' graves to remove an item from the pool for the rest of the run and reroll a new option in its place. The number of banishes you get increases the more items you unlock.

This could be used strategically to remove items you are not interested in playing with this run right away, to increase the droprate of other items from the start of the run, or it could be saved until later in a run when you really need the reroll to find yourself an item to defeat the upcoming boss.

To start, banishes are only available in singleplayer. In Kingmaker, players already have a lot of time to perfect their build so making that gamemode more consistent would just raise the quality of builds neccessary to compete, which is not something we want.

Item drops:
There is a system in place where the game increases the drop rate of items depending on which ones you already have equipped, to try to predict what you want. The game does this depending on the tags and abilities items have, but it's not omnipotent, and it can't always predict what synergies the player intends to create in the future. We've tuned up this system to give better drops in all occurrences, but particularly, Banish rerolls, Merchant rerolls, Fairies, and Fairy Queens have been tuned up significantly. These are instances where players are actively looking for something to save their build and praying for good RNG.

Overtuning this system would make pivoting difficult, as the game would continue to feed you items that go with your current build, so we want to be careful here.

This is our first attempt to give more player agency over the item drops. Ultimately, players being able to force their dream build every run and succeed is not something we think sounds fun, so we hope this addition does not lead to that, but that it enables more strategy and a feeling of control.

Let us know what you think.

Hotfix for kingmaker balance

Hello, this is a minor hotfix patch to address kingmaker balance. We aim to release a bigger patch with bugfixes and new features at the end of the week.

Explosive fish and Energy drain currently rules the meta. We wish to change the effects of these to still be viable but while we wait for translations for the new effects, Energy Drain has been disabled from kingmaker and Explosive fish has been given a temporary effect of "Battle Start: Give the enemy 2 riptide".

This patch also implements some anti cheating measures. This is a first step while we work on a more permanent solution but hopefully it raises the barrier to cheat significantly, more to come on this matter in future patches. This has been a much larger problem than we anticipated and we're sorry for any lost runs this have caused.

See you soon.
