Tamer: King of Dinosaurs News

Monthly Dev Update #08 - Supporters Build, Animations, Boob Physics, and more!

[p]Hey everyone![/p][p]We have tons of exciting news to share with you! Now hold tight, because this will be a long one.[/p][p]And before we get to it, don’t forget to wishlist Tamer: King of Dinosaurs![/p]
[dynamiclink][/dynamiclink]Supporters Demo Build
[p]As we mentioned a few times already, we are currently putting together material for a new demo build for our supporters. We're shooting for the end of August at this point, so you guys can see how far the development has come.[/p][p]Here's what the demo will include:[/p]
 • [p]Updated Galmine NSFW scene with new lighting and physics[/p]
 • [p]Chase sequence (first time we've given access to gameplay!)[/p]
 • [p]Additional preview cutscenes delivered in-engine[/p]
[p]Once this demo is released, we plan to update it over time by adding additional NSFW content and polishing the gameplay based on your feedback.[/p]
Day 1 Chase Continues
[p][/p][p]Development on the cave chase is progressing well, but we've been working on this one for a month straight and need a break. As a result, we're going to focus more on cutscenes for now, but we'll be back with more news about it soon![/p]
Romance Scenes and Animations

Trel's Hotspring Scene
[p]Recently, we started working on the opening cutscene of Trel's final romance quest.[/p][p]This one involves a trip to the hot springs so she can take a bath. Here is a preview shot for you, but keep in mind these are censored since she has her dress on, and in the full game, she's gonna be in her birthday suit.[/p][p]Also, the purple hair is a result of some lights not being properly set up yet. Maybe we can consider it as a cosmetic option in the future, “a happy accident”.[/p][p] [/p]
Trel's NSFW Animations
[p]Speaking of Trel, her NSFW scenes are in the works, and these are particularly tricky because of all the extra anatomy we have to deal with to get her functional.[/p][p]The results look great, though, especially in motion! We hope to include her in an upcoming demo build exclusive to our supporters once she's ready.[/p][p][/p]
Sheela Romance Scene
[p]Mild spoiler here, but Sheela's first romance scene is a special one. It takes place after a rather monumental effort on Victor's part to keep her safe.[/p][p]The weather on this day called for us to create a new VFX setup that was tricky because it takes place inside our cinematic version of the fort. This has an "artificial" sky, and replacing it with anything this heavy takes some doing.[/p][p]Still, we pulled it off! Here's the result:[/p][p][/p]
Upcoming Sheela's Lake Scene Preview
[p]Soon, we should have a preview for you of a certain scene that happens at the lake between Victor and Sheela that sets the tone for their relationship in our devlog.[/p][p]This sequence was particularly challenging because of the VFX work and the water particles needed to show Sheela taking a cat bath...a very sexy one at that.[/p][p]We know you'll enjoy it, so give us another week to clean it up a bit, and we'll have it available for your viewing pleasure.[/p][p][/p]
Final Kacerie Positions
[p]Our NSFW animator is finishing up Kacerie's sequences. Here's a particularly good-looking standing doggy sequence set up in the gemstone cave, and a few positions:[/p][p][/p][p][/p]
Galmine NSFW Animations
[p]We also have some spicy Galmine previews for you![/p][p]Take a look at her in action during her third romance quest in the harvest grove below:[/p][p][/p]
Heel Adjustments
[p]Along with completing NSFW animations, we're also working on getting all of the high heels working with our outfit system, which is proving to be trickier than expected, but the results speak for themselves.[/p][p]So if you wanted to smash in massive stripper heels, don't worry - we've got you covered.[/p][p][/p]
NSFW Outfit Boob Physics
[p]Great, glorious science has blessed us with micro bikinis and boobs that react realistically to them. Oh Lord...[/p][p]Check out Sheela practicing her stretches below, and see Victor stretching Sheela below as well.[/p][p][/p][p]You'll be able to take full advantage of these outfits in our romance scenes.[/p][p]We also wanted to assure everyone that these outfits will be available during gameplay as well, so you can have your favorite ladies wearing your favorite outfits at all times.[/p][p]They will also carry over to cutscenes, which we're sure will result in some stepped-on dramatic moments when someone's pouring their heart out in a barely visible plastic string suit.[/p]
Cutscene Updates & VFX
[p]As we go through the cutscenes and get them ready for launch, we also apply VFX. In this case, we added an indicator to our characters whenever they access their Eye-Q.[/p][p]You can see Sheela teaching Victor how to use his below:[/p][p][/p][p]Something else we've been doing recently is refactoring some of the scenes we prepared for trailers previously to fully function in the engine on the correct project settings, such as the shot below with shadowplay:[/p][p][/p][p]Not that it's too amazing to look at, but this effect with the curtain was something that took some doing:[/p][p][/p]
Performance Dubbing
[p]An unfortunate part of recording a game this massive is the fact that sometimes, things just don't work. Characters are out of position, you have sync issues, and other things that can't be fixed with manual animation adjustments, etc.[/p][p]That's why we need to "dub" some sequences with new animation from professionals to make sure the scenes hit the way they need to.[/p][p]We've also added additional characters in the background in some shots that were originally intended only to have one male and one female, and this has proven an excellent method to elevate the scenes.[/p][p]Luckily, this has proven to be relatively simple compared to how we thought it would go.[/p][p][/p]
Promo Material Creation
[p]Finally, please enjoy these lovely pictures of Sheela and Kacerie being posed for promo images.[/p][p]We'll be using this pose for posters and other items to show the game off online.[/p][p]Expect to see these flying around the net soon.[/p][p][/p]
What's Next?
[p]Keep an eye out for the upcoming 'Meet the Girls' posts, which we should still have this upcoming month! We’ll keep working hard to bring you even more updates on our monthly development journey![/p]

Monthly Dev Update #07 - Chase Gameplay, NSFW Scenes, Combat Design, and more!

[p]Hey everyone![/p][p]We got so many updates to share with you that we were having trouble not spoiling them.[/p][p]And before we get to it, don’t forget to wishlist Tamer: King of Dinosaurs![/p]
[dynamiclink][/dynamiclink]

Day 1 Chase Setup
[p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink]In this clip, we can take a look at the first segment of gameplay of the project overall: just like in the books, Victor runs for his life from a pack of deinonychus through the jungle. However, this time around, we've changed up the plot in a significant way so that he meets Hope, his first parasaur mount, right off the bat.[/p][p]They work together to survive the situation and then go their separate ways as Victor has not mastered, nor is he even aware, of his power yet.[/p][p]It's an interesting narrative change that opens the door for some great new scenes.[/p][p]Keep in mind we are still in pre-alpha visualization at this point, and everything is incredibly rough, but this should give you an idea of the overall concept and the pacing we're aiming for.[/p][p]This serves as a tutorial to teach you how to lance dinos with your spear and dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge.[/p][p]One thing we've added to this map is obstacles on the ground that do damage if you run over them, such as the spiked brambles.[/p][p]We've also added deinonychus lancing, where they will approach you from the front or side, and you must use your spear to attack them, and this must be manually aimed. This part is still a work in progress, but we should have it done within the next two weeks.[/p][p]The empty section in the middle is where we plan to have a big "vista" moment where you can look out at the world and see some large dinosaurs, such as brachiosaurus, roaming in the background.[/p][p]After that, inside the cave, we're going to have some beautiful crystals fall from the ceiling and work as impact obstacles.[/p][p]You can see a preview of it in the following video:[/p]
[dynamiclink][/dynamiclink]

NSFW Lighting Underway
[p]Now that we have finished the first lighting pass of the cinematics, we've begun adding lighting to the NSFW scenes. Our technical artists took great care in upgrading the options available there and made it look much better.[/p][p]We've still got some color grading and VFX work to do, but check out the progress below:[/p][p][/p][p][/p]
New Victor Outfit
[p]Since Victor gets into a lot of scraps during his first month in Dinosaurland and his work shirt gets wrecked, we needed a new outfit for him.[/p][p]We designed something that he could wear underneath that would eventually replace his main outfit towards the middle of the game. Using a simple tank top base, we designed a logo for the LA County Dept of Animal Care and Control and applied that PNG to the 3D model.[/p][p]
[/p][p][/p]
Map Progress
[p]We're continuing to work on the map as always, and recently made a pass over a key area you'll visit on day 10 prior to the deinonychus raid at the fort.[/p][p]This is where you'll battle a deinonychus alpha for the first time.[/p][p]We needed this area to have room for the battle while also looking good for cutscenes. We're going to tweak the colors more here so the grass isn't so yellow, but you get the idea.[/p][p]
[/p][p][/p]
Combat Design - Adrenaline
[p]As we continue designing combat, we looked at other melee-focused games in the genre and examined concepts we liked and ones we felt did not fit our project.[/p][p]In particular, stamina meters are something the team as a whole did not find particularly fun. In games where they exist, combat is seen more as something hardcore and punishing, where players rely on heavy, calculated swings to take advantage of openings and do damage while constraining themselves from becoming too vulnerable.[/p][p]While this works well for those projects, we want Tamer to be focused more on fun, arcade-style combat that can still be challenging without relying so heavily on pacing and windows of opportunity.[/p][p]To that end, we've decided to reward players for playing well in the opposite way - when you land a solid hit, parry, counter, dodge properly, etc., you will earn adrenaline. This charges up like a super meter in a fighting game.[/p][p]As you earn adrenaline, you can either maintain it for passive bonuses or expend it using special moves, like a mana bar that refills with solid gameplay decisions and execution.[/p][p]We're still working out the details, but we're really enjoying this concept so far.[/p][p]We'll explain more about combat and progression as time goes on and we begin implementing these ideas.[/p][p][/p]
Pachycephalosaurus Animation
[p]We've finally confirmed that the pacy will be a regular enemy in the game and have rigged and started animating it for a debut very soon.[/p][p]These guys are going to be tough late-game enemies that attack in groups with some interesting patterns that need to be dodged and countered by the player.[/p][p]
[/p][p][/p]
What's Next?
[p]Keep an eye out for the upcoming 'Meet the Girls' posts, which we should still have this month! We’ll keep working hard to bring you even more updates on our monthly development journey![/p]

Monthly Dev Update #6 – Romance, Chase Scenes & Dino Combat Heat Up!
Galmine Romance & Valley Chase
Today we wanted to show you two video previews of what we've been cooking up lately.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CeK3gVubrQ

The first is Galmine's second romance scene. Here she offers to make Victor some larger water pots for the fort but needs better materials to do it. That leads them inside an area that's a natural pheonomenon and absolutely beautiful.

Since this is their second time together, their conversation about their relationship is more confident and in-depth. They reveal some intimate truths to each other and you learn about their characters through the interaction, which is exactly what this game is all about - not just shoving sex in your face, but presenting it as a natural sum of real, loving relationships.

The second part of the video is a preview of the chase scene in the valley.

This is still in PRE-ALPHA, so please excuse the animations and timing. It's rough at the moment but gives you a good idea of what to expect from Tamer's high-octance action sequences.
ADDITIONAL CUTSCENE WORK
Along with the romance scenes we're now wrapping up production on some additional sequences that take place in the valley. Now that we've done some more set dressing for this area the cinematography is turning out great.

We've got basic lighting in place and plan to enhance the visuals even more as we get closer to launch.

Our approach to blocking these scenes is to try and take the "every frame a painting" philosophy to heart and not just have the camera tipping all over the place like many modern game and film productions.

This allows you to really focus on the character's expressions and the excellent story without feeling too drab or boring. Adding subtle movement to the cameras keeps you connected to the frame while offering a bit more visual stimulation than a totally still shot.

We're happy with how this footage is turning out and will be sharing more as we move forward!

Now that we have animatons for Jinx, even he's getting in on the action!
DINO ANIMATION
With the cleanup of the human characters 90% finished we can now focus our attention on the dinos and give them some love. Here you see Victor taming Hope - his first dinosaur mount.

They share a moment of deep connection through his taming ability here and she becomes loyal for the rest of the game.

Animating these sequences are tricky because we have to animate the dinosaurs and manipulate the performance capture at the same time, but getting to the finished product is rewarding!
COMBAT SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION
We're making sure to create plenty of solid documentation as we get ready to start implementing the core parts of our combat system. Doing so will allow us to produce something stable and effective.

Here you can see the aggro system for the enemies in place.

Since we are going to have Victor and Sheela fighting multiple dinosaurs, we need to make sure they don't get totally swarmed and overwhelmed. Adding an intended rhythm and balance to combat is essential to avoid this.

Therefore we're creating our own take on the kind of ticket system used by so many modern games to ensure enemies can both act and think as a group. This allows them to store actions without immediately taking them and instead doind what they need to at the right time so everything feels good rather than random.
NEXT ENEMY - Pachycephalosaurus
One of the new enemy types we're going to add to the game is the pachy you see above. They will be highly mobile and aggressive enemies that chase you if you try to avoid them. They attack with charging patterns and short range headbutts but are vulnerable to everything but a direct attack.

That means parrying or doding their approach will yield significant openings for damage.

Expect to see them up and running within the next few months.
KACERIE NSFW PREVIEWS
Kacerie's big romance scene is still in development and here you can see her practicing some partner yoga with Victor.

This is the first time we've tried some 69 action and we'll show you how good it looks in-engine soon.

I'll just leave this here also...
MAP DETAILS
Now that the gameplay and days are all sorted we can add some higher detail passes to the map. You can see the process yielding some great results below:

Of course, this is not totally final. We'll have a lot more to add and tweak before release, especially concerning lighting and atmosphere.

See you in the next dev update!

Monthly Dev Update #5

Hello fans!

Today we have a preview of a fun cutscene we just started working on this week. Here you can see the first time Sheela brings Victor to the peak of Dinosaurland and shows him what's up. We had to make a special landscape version just for this one sequence but it sure paid off.

Note that this is still a WIP as you can see from the spears being at the wrong angles at times and the look of the water at the lake. That's because we've got all new water in the game!

NEW WATER

We've had a placeholder volume in place for the game's water for quite some time.

We've now put some work in to upgrade it and the map is looking way better as a result.

It not only makes an impact on the cinematography but also the general vibe of the gameplay. Once we add some nice ambient water sounds as well the world will feel more alive.

BIRD FIGHT

On the 6th and 9th days of the game you have an encounter with the orange birds. This involves Victor fighting them with a spear while Sheela shoots them down one by one.

We wanted to offer some variety in this mode so we created three different colors/sizes of bird with yellow being the smallest, orange being regular and the darker ones being more mature with the biggest size and higher HP.

You can see a preview of this mode on our test map below:

We consider this a raid sequence as it involves waves of enemies coming at you that need to be cleared. We're planning to add some mini-game style elements to it as well later such as dodging air attacks from the birds.

Making the pelagornis have unique attacks that take advantage of their wings even after they've been shot down has been a priority for us and we're getting that done now too.

KACERIE NSFW PREVIEW

We're still chipping away at "the pink one" and her scenes in the NSFW module. Here you can see two of her new animations in engine.

We'll show some more off on the new NSFW maps once they're ready.

HUMANOID ANIMATIONS

Another big part of production lately has been working on all of the humanoid animations we need for the game, such as bow and spear attacks. This has been a long time coming, but we finally managed to bring some help on board to get them done.

Adding these to the game will finally give it a "real" game feel rather than having everything be pre-alpha placeholders.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Next week we'll have another cutscene preview you for you and some more information about our upcoming internal build test. Make sure you check out our Patreon for news.

There will also be more NSFW previews as we continue working on Kacerie's scenes.

Thanks for your support! See you again next time.
