Update – Steam Cloud Save, UI Improvements & More - July 31

It’s been a little while since our last patch, but we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes. Today’s update brings a much-requested feature and sets the stage for what’s coming next!
☁️ Steam Cloud Save is Now Enabled!
You can now sync your save data across devices using Steam Cloud Save.
We’ve tested this feature thoroughly, and it should work without issues. That said, we highly recommend backing up your local save file before syncing just in case. You can find your save files in this location:
AppData/Local/HELLBREAK/Saved/SaveGames/HELLBREAKSave
If you’ve uninstalled the game before this patch and lost your data, reach out to us on Discord and we’ll help you recover your save files.
🖥️ UI & Font Improvements
• Improved legibility across menus by increasing font and UI sizes
  • Fixed incorrectly sized input icons for both keyboard and controller users
🐛 Bug Fixes
• Fixed a rare crash that could happen after killing a boss for the first time
  • Fixed multiple text wrapping issues that caused overflow or unnecessary line breaks
  • Fixed an issue that prevented leaderboards from functioning on Steam Deck
  • Fixed an issue where connecting an external controller on Deck disabled the internal one until restart
  • Fixed an issue where Hellshard tooltips appeared empty when using a controller
🕹️ Steam Deck Verification
Due to the issues mentioned above, Steam had temporarily marked the game as unsupported on Steam Deck. With these fixes now in place, this status should be updated soon.

A playable tutorial, especially for new players, to help ease into the chaos of HELLBREAK

Here’s a teaser from one of the new weapons we’ve been working on:
💀 Hint: it’s not a melee weapon…

Performance & Optimization Patch – July 2

Today’s patch brings some important improvements aimed at making HELLBREAK run smoother across a wider range of systems. This is one of several upcoming updates focused on performance and polish.

⚙️ Performance Improvements

  • Optimized lighting, visual effects, and overall map performance in both Necropit and Courtyard.
  • Reduced stutters caused by curse effects, especially when multiple enemies are affected at once.
  • Optimized the visual effects of each curse.
  • Reduced stuttering caused by certain enemy attacks.
  • Motion Blur and Bloom effects have been disabled to improve clarity and performance.

These changes should result in a 10–30% performance improvement depending on hardware and settings. You may also notice fewer sudden frame drops and more consistent framerate across different graphics settings, especially between Medium and High.

This is not the end of our optimization work, more adjustments and improvements are already planned.
🔊 Other Changes
Adjusted the volume of several sound effects for better in-game clarity.
🐛 Fixes
Fixed a rare issue where banishing all upgrades of a weapon could cause the game to freeze during blessing selection.

🔄 Moving Forward

We’ll continue working on both performance improvements and general polish while also preparing new features like weapons, spells, and progression systems. Next patch will focus on balance changes and some more optimization work.

Thank you for all the feedback and bug reports, keep them coming via Steam Discussions or Discord!

Hotfix – June 27

Quick patch to address two important issues:

  • Fixed a bug where banishing all 3 blessings would freeze blessing selection.
➤ You can now only banish up to 2 blessings before re-rolling.
  • Fixed a rare issue where certain UI buttons (like Primary Weapon or Demon Lord profiles) would stop responding.

Thanks for the quick reports, keep them coming through Steam Discussions or Discord! 🔧🔥

Quality of Life & Feature Update – June 25

Big update today! We’ve heard your feedback and are excited to bring in some highly requested features and improvements that should make HELLBREAK smoother and more enjoyable, especially when it comes to consistency, clarity, and control.

⚠️ Reminder: Our 20% launch discount ends tomorrow!

🔥 New Features

  • Choose Your Starting Weapon
You can now start a trial with any unlocked weapon!
We heard your frustration about not getting the weapon you want—this change gives you control and removes that friction. Some weapons were previously balanced around their rarity, but with upcoming features like weapon achievements, progression tracking, and more in-trial upgrades, we believe every weapon deserves a chance to shine.
  • Blessing Banishing
You can now banish a blessing during selection, preventing it from showing up again in the same trial. As we add more blessings, this feature will become increasingly valuable.
  • New Player Guidance
After finishing their first trial and earning a hellshard, new players will now see a small popup explaining the Armory tab and how Hellshards work.
  • Clearer Damage Feedback
Based on your feedback, we’ve added pain grunt sounds when taking damage to improve clarity during chaotic moments.
  • Armory Perk Info
You can now view all perk descriptions for unlocked weapons in the Armory, even if a perk itself isn’t unlocked yet.
  • Improved Controller Navigation
Armory navigation is now smoother for controller users. The weapon info now updates automatically as you scroll through the list.
  • Optional Auto-Fire for Controllers
We noticed that repeatedly firing non-auto weapons (like the Banshee) could be tiring on a controller.
You can now enable a setting that lets non-auto weapons fire as if they were automatic (with a slightly reduced fire rate). This setting is fully optional and can be toggled in the settings (gameplay) menu.

⚙️ Balance Changes
  • Harbinger pellet damage reduced: 150 → 120
  • Shredder base damage reduced: 400 → 330
  • Serathiel’s final mission Blaze requirement: 20 → 10
  • Gholgoroth’s final mission Hex requirement: 15 → 10
  • Gholgoroth’s first mission Score requirement: 150k → 100k
  • Slightly reduced the Ripper spawns for the first difficulty of Necropit.

🐛 Fixes

  • Fixed a rare bug where trials wouldn’t end even after all enemies were dead. Also added a failsafe: if no boss remains after 20:30, the trial will force-end.
  • Fixed an issue where progress for Var’zul’s 4th mission wasn’t saved between trials.
  • Fixed several UI navigation issues for controller users.

What’s Next?

The next patch will focus on performance & optimization. Stay tuned.
