Assassin's Creed devs influenced Rainbow Six Siege's new op

The new Rainbow Six Siege season is about to kick off this week, titled Demon Veil, and it introduces a brand new operator to one of the best multiplayer games on PC. Azami is a Japanese bodyguard whose gadget, Kiba Barrier, acts a lot like the hidden blades in Assassin's Creed series - and that's not entirely coincidental.

Fans don't have long to wait until the latest Rainbow Six Siege season arrives in Ubisoft's popular FPS game, and the Year 7 roadmap contains new maps, gameplay changes, and a lot more content dropping this year. The big deal for release, however, is new operator Azami, whose Kiba Barrier gadget can actually repair breaches.

The way the Kiba gadget deploys is via a knife that Azami extends from her sleeve and then throws, but the animation seems partly inspired by the iconic hidden blade from Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed games. We spoke with Siege's creative director Alex Karpazis and asked whether this was an intentional reference.

Rainbow Six Siege's Team Deathmatch is a warm-up mode, not training wheels

Getting to grips with Rainbow Six Siege's gameplay can be a steep learning curve for new players and Ubisoft is well aware of this. Heading into its seventh year of content for Siege, Ubisoft has announced that new onboarding measures are coming to its tactical shooter - although, the new Team Deathmatch mode isn't one of them.

Speaking to The Loadout, several members of Siege's development team explain why Team Deathmatch hasn't been created with newcomers in mind - despite the fact that it's a "less serious mode that can be played with friends", according to associate game director Christopher Budgen.

"While we believe that TDM offers a great way to learn the weapons of Siege, we do not consider it to be an onboarding mode at its core", says Budgen. "Our engaged userbase will find this mode to be a fantastic way to start their play sessions... they will be challenged much more in TDM than in a mode like Training Grounds."

Hitting 100 operators still the "ultimate goal" for Rainbow Six Siege devs

Rainbow Six Siege dev: "I feel sorry for any game that tries our recipe now"

Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege is over six years old and it's still one of the best multiplayer games on PC, with a lot of new content coming soon in Year 7 Season 1 - Operation: Demon Veil. Siege is in such a strong position, in fact, that the game's director says it should be "pretty intimidating" for any team-based tactical shooter competitors.

Rainbow Six Siege is getting ready to launch its Year 7 with Demon Veil, complete with a new operator who can repair breaches. Speaking to PCGamesN, creative director Alex Karpazis confirms that Siege is here to stay, and that it's "going to receive all the support it needs to be as successful as it needs to be". He adds: "We have long-term ambitions".

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Siege is, despite still being incredibly popular, there has never been a direct triple-A competitor. We asked Karpazis about this, and he told us, "I feel sorry for any game that tries that kind of recipe now".

Hitting 100 operators still the "ultimate goal" for Rainbow Six Siege devs

Rainbow Six Siege is going to have 63 operators to choose from when Azami is introduced in Operation Demon Veil, which is an impressive line-up. Back in 2018, it was reported that Ubisoft has a ten-year support plan for Rainbow Six Siege and an intention of introducing 100 operators to its tactical shooter. With the number of new operators dropping in recent years though, is that still a target for Ubisoft to achieve? Following a media event for Demon Veil, The Loadout asked Siege's creative director Alex Karpazis about whether this is still their intention and how they're approaching the task ahead.

"100 operators is the ultimate goal", Karpazis says. "We're still committed to introducing 100 operators to Siege."

If Ubisoft wanted to achieve this in its original ten-year plan, it would need to release over ten operators a year for Siege. When this fact was mentioned, Karpazis clarifies that the "promise of 100 operators" was a completely separate entity to the ten-year plan. "We want to think long term for the game", he says, promising players that Siege will be supported for many years to come. However, it's still Ubisoft's goal to hit 100 operators in Siege "regardless of timelines".

Rainbow Six Siege's Azami was a "green goo" operator called Flubber

Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege is still one of the best multiplayer games on PC and it's about to hit Year 7 Season 1 - now officially revealed as Demon Veil. It's also about to get a new operator with a game-changing gadget, but to get to this the team prototyped several operators with unique gadgets - including one with a "pile of green goo" called Flubber.

Earlier this month the Rainbow Six Siege team revealed Demon Veil and the new operator Azami, a Japanese defender with a meta-busting gadget called the Kiba Barrier - which can repair walls and other breaches. Azami's the first operator that can do this, although Ubisoft informed us of two other cancelled operators that led to Azami - nicknamed Patcher and Flubber.

We spoke with creative director Alex Karpazis and asked him about Azami's development journey, who told us the operator had "a long and storied past" - primarily "because the idea behind her gadget to repair destruction or patch holes is so integral to Siege".
